High Point vs. Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

I think most on here feel the same. If a S16 is a bad year. Man, we are spoiled.
To an extent sure. Honestly though, I don't feel like S16 has the same allure as the past. Transfer portal, NIL and just in general the teams in the lower middle not being far off from teams in the higher middle. A lot of random teams have been to S16, E8 and F4s.......one's whose season would not say they are worthy. I think that more than anything is what made the past few years tournament performances that much more frustrating. We had an elite player but still played like a middle middle team alot of the time.

Did they win 14 in a row maybe they are better now than what they were when they were losing. I don’t know that to be true but maybe.

They did TJ - hadn't lost since early January......now they did trail Winthrop in the Big South Championship by 15....so there's that. Good coach, but it was more a question of how well Purdue would execute I think. Plenty of criticism warranted, but you have to like the effort on the boards and generally ok with turnovers - it got hairy at times no doubt.

Think he meant 7th in KenPom offense efficiency rating. By the way, High Point came in at 25th - Purdue defensively did do some good things at times......definitely room for improvement though and will need it for Saturday, whomever it is.
I thought the first half was really really good in comparison to most Purdue games. I thought the second half they came off some screens and hit some quick shots behind the arch. Gotta got a few effort rebounds just bounce their way and hit some threes overall I think Purdue did pretty well defensively

Wisky lookin good today

Someone with an X account tell Seth Davis to eat it. All of it. Boiler Up. Survive and advance!

Haha - oh you know someone will in this day and age.....would be hilarious if they did it in a bad Scottish/Pirate muddled accent.

Yeah, when there’s five minutes to go, that’s plenty of time and some things can happen so you really want to execute at that point in time you still have the lead you don’t want to take quick shots unless they’re really really good shots. Purdue countered them when they got it down to three and made the run when they need to and that was good and then the last couple of minutes you know if you use the clock, you can just turned around and hand them the ball and you win.The game is over anyhow they they can’t let you use the clock. They have to foul and we saw a Purdue spread it out and they sent everybody over the half court line and purduehad two people back. They could’ve dunked another one at the end of the game and just left it, but They were a good team. They’re all good teams in here and teams get closer together many times when it gets into a one and done situation.

Expectations went from elite 8 at the start of the year to being happy we beat High Point

Speaks of the failure of this years team and coach
this has been our achilles heal recently. losing to a double digit seed has become so common for us that all the experts picked highpoint

Purdue: Veteran experience proved valuable for Pudue with seniors Smith, Caleb Furst and Fletcher Loyer — freshmen in 2023 when the Boilermakers became the second No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed — helping steady the Boilermakers down the stretch. this was in the espn recap. whoever wrote this needs to be fired for incompetence

Sweet 16s don't feel as good (in my opinion) when practically any 13-15 has a decent shot at it. We're two years removed from a 5. San Diego State, 9. Florida Atlantic 5. Miami and 4. Uconn Final Four. There is a ton more parity. Which makes it simultaneously harder to get there, but also less special when Princeton has made it recently. For S16 to be the ceiling in this day and age, when the Horizon League champion has the same ceiling, doesn't exactly feel spoiled to me.

Missed the game for work, but 22 point and 24 rebounds from the bench looks encouraging. Will watch the game this evening and have more useless things to say later.

Looks like Fletch didn't shoot much but was perfect from the line. How did his elbow look?

BTW: this is my 5000th post---for whatever that's worth:p

Difference is we are consistently in the S16. It's a special season for them, but a standard for us

I disagree.. College basketball has changed in recent years, sure. But it's still a single elimination tournament. Fewer than 25% of the teams that start this tournament will still be playing next weekend. Who cares if Princeton is one of them? Who cares if a team with 9 portal transfers makes it? Making the Sweet 16 is still a worthy accomplishment, IMO---that's especially true for a team that limped through its last 9 games at 3-6.

Exactly. Harder now than it's ever been.

Congrats on the milestone, rgarlitz.

Bench production absolutley bouyed the Boilers today. Didn't see a problem with the elbow for Fletcher Loyer, but he had some game struggles, candidly.

Best thing about this game is that Purdue seemed unaffected by the game pressure. In this respect it was very different than FDU.
