I really think it is largely psychological at this point. The moment has always been too big for our players. This is nothing against you or your post Jadeerza.
But us old people on this board all feel like, deja vu, we've all seen this too many times before.
We have a lead against a good team, and then we lose within the last 5 seconds of the game. What is it about Purdue and those last 5 seconds? Can we call a time out or switch our personnel? We play just good enough to lose. and just like past history, an 80% FT shooter misses the first of a one and one FT in the final seconds.
Frankly, I'm tired of playing good enough to lose. I'm tired of our history of quality losses. Rick Mount and Purdue almost beat UCLA in a game before the tournament final in 63 or 64 or 65. I don't recall the exact year but the fact is, they lost.
You cant tell me the players overlooked or were not fired up for this game. or still had the flu. This was the game they pointed to all season long as that statement game - beating MSU at their house. this was the game all the elite recruits and for that matter NBA scouts were watching. Someday we may win games like this. history dictates that championship teams find a way to win when their best players are having a bad day. and that's what MSU did today.
No, we did not lay an egg. We didn't lay an egg against OSU either. and that's what hurts the most. I could accept being blown away. but opportunity knocked, and we had a chance to win both games. but the ghosts of Purdue past came out in both games in the last 5 seconds and decided that we would lose. We can't prevent a quality team from making that last second shot !!!
Forget that Arizona win. We played that game against Arizona without their starting guard Alkins who averages 29 minutes and 13 points. and it was only Ayton's 6th collegiate game. they are a different team now. Unfortunately, we're not. We're eh same team that lost to Tennessee.
We're not a bad team. We're just who we thought we were. I have a new roof, so I'm not worried about the sky falling down.
And when we get a player like CE who can handle the moment we keep him at the 2 spot and let the standard Purdue senior PG handle the game out of respect to him. Purdue is class, but class doesn't win championships unfortunately.
