The two freshmen impressed...

specifically to what pchad said about any thoughts you "care and are able" to share on the redshirts...do you know if Aaron Wheeler is in addition to doing spot shooting... if he is working on shot fake and one dribble (with some distance) and shot fake two dribble going both directions. In the videos of Aaron playing before Purdue I saw a lot of spot shooting...and that is great to do, but wondering if you know whether he practices the shot fake and a dribble and then shot fake and two dribbles going both ways (left and right) with that first step covering enough distance to get away from the imaginary D? Just curious how his footwork is coming along in shooting on the move. Nojel is going to find himself on a pretty quick team next year with a Ryan that will still need a screen generally and Shasha that is a bit more athletic but will be better with a screen (as almost all are). Not trying to rush this year because this team is a joy to watch, but like others I'm curious how they are progressing if you are able to say. Lastly, if you are able to say (and if you are not...I understand) how is Jacquil's foot coming along?
All I can say both are working on specific things that will help themselves to be ready for next season. I think for both it’s not their skill set why they are not playing this year to me both need to be physically ready to play in the rugged big 10 next season. Both has the skills and both are really good athletes but to me both just needs to get stronger. When you have players at each position they play would have been hard for each of them to see just decent minutes let alone any minutes so it was probably best to redshirt them to not loose a year. I have seen so many guys who had a redshirt year bcuz of these 2 same reasons and came into next season killing and I no these 2 will be ready physically to be able to make immediate impacts. As for Nojel you could be right about next season but my focus is helping him now to improve on his shot and FT now bcuz teams gonna sag on him and dare him to shoot bcuz he is good at getting to the basket so the focus right now is getting that at a point where it’s automatic. We been working and boy what a difference it looks like already. Nojel will be needed this season Big 10 play begins again Wednesday and this bench is really good and just as good as any bench in the country will be vital to this team success this season. I hope I answered the question you asked of me. I’m just making sure that my son will be ready to contribute this season can’t worry about next season this season is still going on.

Fully understand...especially the physical part...Aaron especially. Thank you for the comments and glad to know Nojel is putting in time shooting the ball. BTW..he has a great smile.

carsen can shoot, carsen can create his own shot against anyone, carsen can get to the rim. Also CMP gives Carsen more leeway to play outside of the system than most.
Nojel's strength at this time is more creating for others, and using his advantage as a bigger guard. Their games are just different. Carsen, as is, adds something extra to our offensive system. We can accomodate him in our currently offensive philosophy without having to make any changes. Not so with Nojel at this time.
Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t realized he was more of a facilitator rather than a scorer. I like Nojel as he works hard and his time will come soon. I do hope he gets better at the line as he is going to get plenty of opportunities to earn points that way.

Yes he has always looked to get players around him better but also is a lethal scorer when he needs to be. And you are absolutely right FT gotta get better bcuz i can see him living at the FT line and he has to make them.

It’s pretty amazing to me how so many on this board question who and what my son can and cannot do. I’ll help you out since you cannot make up your mind up on my son. He is a play making guard who can make plays for himself and his teammates and he isn’t able to do that in this system that runs tons of set plays that suits the players who run it so well and it’s an adjustment he is figuring out more now. Playing out of control don’t see that but I see him being a tad bit aggressive this particular game bcuz some of the players were talking smack that neither of us can hear what a player is saying when guarding up close on a player what one might be saying and it’s apparent that happened and he took offense to it like Haas did when he and that player had words. All I no in the minutes production he is getting he’s been playing well defensively and taking care of the ball better playing within himself in this system that is to slow for My son in my opinion. I no my son games better than and commentator or anybody else for that fact and he is playing much better now than a month ago. Conference play starts next week he’ll be ready to step up his game and step in when he’s needed. Standing 6”7 at 223 pounds athletic, fast he can guard and defend 1/4 positions that is a great asset to have and probably be needed more so as Big 10 play begins and he will be ready to help the team in any way he can. He can play this no this system he runs in my opinion doesn’t allow him to showcase what he can really do but he is adjusting for sure.
The greatest playmaking guard I have ever seen was Michael Jordan, but Jordan took his game to the next level within the structure of the triangle offense.

I think that Coach Painter’s structure will benefit Eastern, just as it benefits his teammates. He appears to be very coachable and he plays with great effort, which is something that Painter always values.

Ok this thread is a little ridiculous.
Eastern is playing great defense. The defense gets better with him on the ball. That one drive and finish was a thing of beauty. If he can improve his jump shot he'll be all B1G. IMO Haarms is NBA material and playing a back up role on a top 15 team with 4 seniors.
The future is bright with a core of Haarms, Eastern and CE
coming back next year.
Yes. It's a shame you can't say that you saw something good happening without it turning into this but that's how it goes. Somebody Implied that I was disrespecting our seniors. I made no comment or assertions about them at all. Just said I liked the how the two freshmen were playing on defense and that the style of play would be different, not worse, not better, different.
The future is bright and watching it develop over a few years, just like this group of upper classmen has done, is what is fun about it.

Nathan Baird has a story in the J&C with a similar take.

It seems that Sasha knew the RS was coming and was prepared. Wheeler wanted to compete, but seems to be making the best of it. Both are working hard to prepare for the physical side of the game.

Thanks for your insight Treed, it's awesome to have a glimpse inside our team. Nojel will end up being a fantastic boiler and a great representative of Purdue. He's already a great young man.

wtf?!!! where did this parent threaten that her son will not be back. She mad a correct and legit comment, that the system CMP is running is not the best to showcase her son's offensive ability. That's a correct observation that carries no threat whatsoever. We have a senior-laden team that thrive and win games in the current system. Of course CMP won't adjust that to fit Nojel's skills, certainly not this year. His mom understands that. Where Nojel can contribute this year is getting better on defense and learning ways to fit better offensively this year. The young man is already doing that as we all can see. I do not see an entitled mom, or overbearing mom. I see a passionate mom who has pretty good basketball insight and of course loves and wants the best for her son and the program he committed to.
She made a statement earlier in the year that he won't be here after this year. Since then it has been deleted, but the fact still remains that the people who are the most passionate fans are often the ones that are most misguided/delusional. Purdue is not a slow team, and yet the claims that they are continue. Don't believe me? Go get a subscription to KenPom and see the stats for yourself.

Also the notion that Nojel can't thrive in Painter's motion offense is absurd, because he can and will. He had an isolation against a Lipscomb guy and took it right to the rim and scored over the defender. I expect we will see a lot more of that in years to come. Matt painter's offensive style is extremely similar to the one Jay Wright runs at Villanova, and yet people seem to think Villanova is guard oriented and fast paced, while Purdue is not.

I have no idea what it's like in this day and age of social media to be a parent of a high major D1 athlete, but most tend to stay away from these types of forums for good reason. Emotions lead us to make silly decisions, not based in reality or on facts.

Yes. I have no doubt that Eastern will thrive in Painter’s system if he stays the course.

Thanks! Liked this,"Wheeler is working to improve as a shooter on the move, ball handling and other "guard skills." Also liked that both were getting EXTRA skill work during game days. My hope is that they are able to learn through other's mistakes and to have to learn less on their own mistakes...

Listen sir I’m not hiding what I said back almost 2 months ago and I admitted I made the comment out of frustration and I have moved on so no need to keep bringing that up. I’m also entitled to be on this board if I choose to be whether my son on this team or not I have opinions about basketball like many of you I just happen to be a Women with a child in the team giving my opinions about my knowledge of basketball. Some of you may think it’s not a good idea for me to be here why bcuz my son is on the team well what is the harm in what I say when I have opinions like many of you there is no difference. Yes I respond to some comments made by some of you on here mostly good comments or opinions about my son but the ones I feel needs a response bcuz some are negative about him I give my thoughts bcuz I can like many of you. I’m a fan of this team like many of you my son just happen to be on the team that is why it makes me being on this board seems different but it really isn’t. Bottom line you Houston gave an opinion why my son will thrive in this system than I’ll reapond like you and give my opinions why it’s not a system that showcase my son offensive abilities nothing bad about that. 4 seniors a sophomore and 3 juniors knows this system inside and out and it works like a well oil machine for them why they winning games but for my son who is a play making guard who is good in ball screens isolation 1 on 1 faster pace transition it tougher for him to do what I no he can do in a system that runs a lot of set plays that works for those players who understand this system. Alls I no he is adjusting now figuring it out how he can be counter productive in this offense where he can score within the offense. He’s defending really well taking care of the ball more while in the game so he’s has made major strides adjusting to the system they run. I no big 10 play starts tomorrow I’m just making sure he will be ready to contribute anyway he can to help this team win.

It's generally thought that the greatest improvement in college basketball is from Freshman to Sophomore seasons. I deeply hope (and expect) that these two will walk onto the court next year ready to immediately contribute.

I see zero value in badgering a current player’s mom whether or not her son is going to transfer. But that’s just me.
There is an Eastern thread every week where this topic is brought up. She could end all the talk about it right now by confirming her son is staying. It's a fair question.

This is the first time I brought it up. It's a completely fair question. If she doesn't want to answer it, then she doesn't have to. However, she could silence the topic by saying he is staying.
It’s not a fair question. Can you at least take Boilers out of your forum name? Your misrepresenting yourself and our fan base.

How? By asking a question that has been talked about on here for the last two months? Would you still have your panties in a wad if I asked "Is Eastern going to be at Purdue next year", but DIDN'T tag her? She would still see it. To answer your question plainly, no I will not change my name.

I’m not about to get into a debate about were my son is going to be he’s here now that’s all that matters. I have consistently said I’m only concerned about this season. I seen what happen last time I made reference to that topic and I’m not getting into that. I was emotional and frustrated and made a poor decision to put something like that on a message board and I’m not getting into that again. Bottom line there is a season still going on and this is all I’m gonna be worried about.

You say you understood my point about how your engagement on this public forum can lead to a side show/distraction. However, you continue to engage in it - and there's one very clear example where it has become a side show already with your previous comment made "in heat" about your son transferring. That comment will not go away because this is a public forum where people will see and remember everything.

Every last post you make will be dissected, remembered, used as fodder and can also be picked up in the media. We saw fan bases mock Swanigan for his weight as a child, you can damn well bet that opposing fan bases will mock your son over your posts.

If you don't want to listen to me, that's fine. But I'd suggest you have your son read this thread and see if it bothers him at all. I believe your son's best interests are what you care about most based on your passion. And it's not gonna be found by participating on this forum.

Sir dissecting my every word what I’m I saying but I understand your point and just as I have said many times over I’m a FAN like many of you and I have basketball opinions and if you can tell me how it’s hurting my son than maybe I’ll see your point. My son is banned from social media during season and if he wasn’t I’ll still be giving my opinion like you just gave me your advice. I do appreciate your advice I do but I see no harm in me talking basketball. I’m not on any social media outlet at all but this message board that’s about purdue basketball amongst other topics that fans share on this site. What makes me different than you is I’m a parent that has a kid on the team but I also have a voice and opinions that I share on this board. Let’s not make of of this than what it is I no when to draw a line.

To be honest, if a parent is willingly coming on a public forum spewing their opinions, why is it unfair to ask?

It's unfair to ask someone who's not trying to or willing to engage in public banter.
Because nothing good comes from it. There’s nothing positive that could possibly happen from a player’s mom posting on here and there’s definitely nothing good in asking her publicly about her son transferring. She can’t answer that question because even as his mom, she doesn’t know. So then she simply puts her son in an awkward position. What’s to stop some random reporter from asking him about it? Why do we need this distraction in what could be a special season? Again, nothing good comes from asking her regardless of what she says. And the fact that it’s an IU fan doing it makes me even angrier.

If honestly think there aren’t other parents following forums like this one you are sadly mistaken whether they are posting on them or not they read stuff that is being said like I do. What would a reporter ask sir tell me why your mom is on a message board giving basketball opinions nothing more I’m not giving out personal information about no staff members or players on the team I’m simply talking basketball related stuff like you do. So you saying it’s wrong of me to be on here than you should not be here either what makes you right in what’s best for me I’m grown and if it was hurting my son in any kinda way than I’ll step away. It’s only a problem bcuz some of you making it more than what it is. Me being on this board will not change how team is playing and winning games if that was the case why are we 13/2 if my being on this board was a problem. I’m my own person and I’m a FAN, a parent with a voice and i choose to voice an opinion I’m not hurting the team my the coaches in no kinda way. What others are saying about me on other sites I could care less what is being said about me bcuz I’m not doing absolutely anything wrong but talking basketball point blank. Made 1 mistake and that’s in the past now I’m looking forward to watching my son play on a team that I see go far this season and hoping my son can help them go as far as I believe this team could go that’s my focus and that is what I’m gonna continue to do support and cheer on this team as a fan and parent. Your points are well taken but I’m not doing nothing wrong.

What is even more troubling most of you who think I should not be here are MEN not 1 women who voices there opinions on this site has said to me you should not be doing what you are doing. Only MEN and I’m suppose to bow down bcuz you MEN suggest I should behave and do what I’m told sounds like some chauvinist woman bashing going on and I’m a woman that gonna stand up for what I feel is right. I’m a woman I have view points and opinions on a male dominated site and some of you using the issue bcuz iim a parent of a player on a team as an excuse to try to make me feel like I’m doing something wrong. I really like you being on here. Maybe this is the right place for you to vent if you find yourself frustrated. Its not like this is anything but a free and open message board. You have seen it now for yourself. There are all kinds of personalities that come and post here. Jut don't take the bait when these crafty IU fans come on here acting like they are lifelong Purdue fans. They are the ones trying to get a rise out of you. Most on here would rather converse and maybe share a different point of view. Keep on keeping on.

Ms. Reed, you’re well within your rights to post here or anywhere. I just don’t think you’ll find any satisfaction or joy by doing so. You may feel differently and are welcome to keep posting here. But I know I wouldn’t because I couldnt imagine how me posting on a public forum like this could help my son. I’ll repeat the same thing I told you in the lobby of the Atlantis after the Arizona game...I appreciate your insight and your passion for your son, but I see no outcome on this board that will be to your satisfaction. People on here - some of whom are unfortunately Purdue “fans” - are baiting you. They want to pounce on any misstep you take. You’ve acknowledged making one already and I appreciate your candor in recanting it. But the trolls will feed on it and others. People post threads on here about your son simply to try and draw you into the fray. I know you can handle yourself fine...but we all have weak spots for our kids. I just don’t know why you enter this arena and take on all comers. Let me be clear, we love Nojel. He has an amazing future. I hope it is as a future Boilermaker alum. But this thing keeps getting worse. And Nojel may not be on social media, but this all will get back to him. And I don’t want this to become a big deal between him, you, his team, and his school.

Like I said I’m not hurting a sole I’m not talking about players on this team I only talk about things about my son and it all basketball related stuff nothing more and if that’s wrong than some of you need to stop talking about any player on this team no matter what they do or how they play but you do bcuz you are a man and you have opinions well sir so do I and I’m not gonna be bullied by anybody so if some of you got basketball related topics to talk about let talk. Have a good night .
Please don’t make this about gender. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything. I’m also not bashing you and never have bashed you and neither has BoilerBulldog. We just don’t like when fans try to get you to answer questions about your son’s future that you can’t possibly know the answer to. They are playing a gotcha game that does not help you in any way.

The thing is that most people on this board who post do so totally anonymously and therefore what they post can’t be used against them in their real lives. You post as yourself, which is admirable, but which also puts you in a position where what you say can be used against you in your personal life. I just don’t want that to happen.
