So, Haarms commits for '17

There is a muscle-memory on defense to block the right hand because that is what you do most of the time ... it just takes a quarter of a second for your mind to figure it out, but most still start out going for the right hand ...

Also, many lefties are really anomalous dominant ... that means they "should" be right handed, but aren't - if that makes sense. It has to do with right-eye dominant or not. Anyway, they do tend to develop better right hands because they should have been right handed.
I'm a southpaw myself but I can't do anything with my right hand. The only thing i can do with my right hand is count to 5. :D

But all jokes aside I can tell you most lefties are right eye dominant. I played travel ball with 5 lefties on my team out of 12 (yes, 5 it's an absurd number) and we've all agreed when looking back we are right eye-dominant people.

Not dumping on anything or anyone. Just said I was reminded of Matt ten Dam.
Gotcha. There has just been so much negative, I wasn't sure. Ten Dam struggled to perform basic basketball skills. This kid already is miles ahead of the plodding Dutchman. Could use some of ten dams bulk though.

Well, given the state of the football program and the less than stellar performance of the basketball program the last 4 years [and no final fours since I was a freshman], I think some of that negativity is understandable. Bitching about it on this forum won't solve anything, but it's a safe place to vent.

Here's how I see everything playing out. Swanigan will leave after this season whether he is first round or not. For his sake and ours, I hope he plays his way into that status.

Haas will declare and go through the process but will come back when he doesn't get first round feedback. Hopefully he can get drafted and make a roster after his senior season but I think it will be really tough with his limitations to run the court fluidly. He is still good for a half court college game but I can't see him flourishing in an up tempo NBA game with a 24 second shot clock.

Edwards will be back as well after declaring and not getting first round feedback. I'm a little more uncertain about this than Haas but I think he would have to play at a B1G POY level this season to get to that status and that's possible but not probable.

Haarms will redshirt as a freshman because Jacquil Taylor will be as ready to play by then (if not this season) as he will ever be. I assume he will be serviceable as a backup center by then and possibly backing up Edwards at the 4 as well. If he is good with a larger role this season he might earn a starting role should Haas or Edwards end up leaving early with Swanigan. Smotherman will also be a senior and able to play minutes at both forward spots that season which is another reason we should be able to redshirt Haarms.

Basically I find it very unlikely that we will need him to play as a true frosh which is ideal given that he needs a couple years of adding good weight to his body to be ready to compete at a high level in the B1G.

I have some concerns with red shirting a 20 year old. Not sure why, just do.

Of course highlights show all the makes, but he is a great get. If he develops before Haas leaves that would be an impressive front line.
7' average with a 6' 9 3rd front.
I agree that recruiting 7' players may be CMP calling. Hope you loose every game to IU, but Purdue is on track to be hard to match up against.
Very interesting player to follow.
Honestly I hope Purdue the best with the exception of one team.

I am a southpaw myself and know many, but most lefties

College basketball is at it's best when two historic basketball programs are hanging with the elite. Hope the Hoosiers have a successful season and win...unless of course they're playing the boilers ;)

Phil Mickelson plays golf left handed, does everything else right handed, and amazingly, is a scratch golfer right handed.

Agree basketball has not been as good as it should have been but the last two years were solid and on the uptick. If they had not screwed the pooch against ALR the mood would be different around here. Football is unwatchable. Makes the Leon Burtnet years look outstanding.
To better days.

Leon had one good year where he beat Notre Dame, Michigan and went to the Peach Bowl. Jim Everett was QB.

I'm on record as "preferring two 4's about 6'9" or so, but getting known for 5's has some advantages. Statistically, there are few people that want and have the size to play a 5. It is hard to grab a good one as there are so few...now on the other hand there are a lot of good 6'6" to 6'8" players to surround that hard to find big. I'm just reluctant with the 7 footers due to the rule emphasis that I think caters to perimeter players that can drive...

Patrick Bade
Tacos
Donnie Hale
Lawson
Calasan
Chris Reid
Marcius
Simpson
Taylor

These are the 3 star big men Painter has recruited. We can say rankings don't matter, but the 4 star big guys and one 5 star (JJ, AJH, Haas, Biggie) have clearly been much better. Taylor is the only 3 star big man who is still active, so time will tell, but the rest were ok backups as upperclassmen or worse. Best was probably Calasan, a JC transfer who averaged around 6 points and 3 rebounds in his 2 years in WL.

All of that said, this guy sounds and looks unique, different from anyone above. I hope he develops and becomes the next Dirk. Regardless, I think it's pretty unlikely he is an impact player early in his career. We need some impact players, particularly a guard (or 2) who can create their own shot. I'm hoping CMP can get some early impact along with long term potential in 2017.

Reid wasn't a 3-star (1 or 2-star) but I think everyone else listed was considered as such. Simpson and Calasan were borderline 3-to-4 star players out of HS and JC, respectively.

Who else has been a lefty on the team?

Does anyone remember if Bryant Dillon (PG on Painter's first Purdue team) was a southpaw?

Otherwise: -Scott Martin
-Patrick Bade
-Donnie Hale
-Ronnie Johnson
-Basil Smotherman
-Jacquil Taylor

That's the question I have had the last couple days. Why would a person who calls himself a fan only discuss it when it's bad news. Some appear to enjoy the worst scenario. Strange.

Yes. Remarkable how fast the ship sank after that. Next thing you now we were supporting Fred Akers retirement fund. Next up was Colleto who did manage to bring in some talent that Tiller used to get us started again.

Haha, some people just feel better when complaining and need to generate drama to fill their craziness quota. Enjoy the the calm, if we wait long enough the conversation will just go back to missing out on JJJ. Im just happy the season is finally around the corner!
