So, Haarms commits for '17

I really like the signing. Kid looks like he has a very high ceiling. One potential, not sure it a knock or something else, but according to nbadraftexpress he will be 20 years years old when he arrives on campus next year! Potentially could be 25 when he graduates if he redshirts! Like I said, not a knock just something to think about.

Here's how I see everything playing out. Swanigan will leave after this season whether he is first round or not. For his sake and ours, I hope he plays his way into that status.

Haas will declare and go through the process but will come back when he doesn't get first round feedback. Hopefully he can get drafted and make a roster after his senior season but I think it will be really tough with his limitations to run the court fluidly. He is still good for a half court college game but I can't see him flourishing in an up tempo NBA game with a 24 second shot clock.

Edwards will be back as well after declaring and not getting first round feedback. I'm a little more uncertain about this than Haas but I think he would have to play at a B1G POY level this season to get to that status and that's possible but not probable.

Haarms will redshirt as a freshman because Jacquil Taylor will be as ready to play by then (if not this season) as he will ever be. I assume he will be serviceable as a backup center by then and possibly backing up Edwards at the 4 as well. If he is good with a larger role this season he might earn a starting role should Haas or Edwards end up leaving early with Swanigan. Smotherman will also be a senior and able to play minutes at both forward spots that season which is another reason we should be able to redshirt Haarms.

Basically I find it very unlikely that we will need him to play as a true frosh which is ideal given that he needs a couple years of adding good weight to his body to be ready to compete at a high level in the B1G.

Don't really have an opinion. Hope he isn't a reach.
At his size, he is all reach :)

he is definitely one where a current/future ranking likely does not matter b/c of such unlimited and unpredictable potential

Good get, let's get another

He seems like a good addition. Haarms appears to have a prototypical Euro-big man type of game, but perimeter-oriented bigs can be toughened up and taught how to get more comfortable with physicality in the paint. He shouldn't go away from his strengths, but he will need to learn how to be more aggressive around the basket and not shy away from it.

For all of you saying "monster in the post", I thnik you'll be disappointed. Most of these 7 ft Euro type players aren't your typical big man banger like a Haas. Which is fine, because if he's got an outside stroke and MP used him correctly, he can still be a unique player.
I think a Rik Smits comparison is good. Or....even a Dirk type. Dirks a really good ball handler but he likes to play outside in for a 7 footer.

If he plays like Dirk I would be immensely okay with that.

Wonder if all the idiots screaming about Painter's recruiting after losing Battey and Tillman will come around and post congratulations to Painter for landing a very high ceiling player.
I will be the first to do so, my beef was Painter was going after the 1 and done'rs.
The student athlete should be his target..3-4 year players who want to go to college
for the experience and education. I watched the clips and Matt has the perfect fit for Purdue. Now let's fill in around for a quality class.

That was something that worried me a bit when watching the first portion of his video but it appeared like he didn't really shy away from the contact inside when defending and blocking shots. Some guys just don't like the physicality it takes to play some tough defense and that isn't the feeling I got from Haarms' video. I think key #1 for him is improving his flexibility which will help him the most in terms of his raw ability (getting a big man's hips to move better and being able to bend goes a long way...just look at Haas' improvement in that sector the last two years). After that, getting 10-15 pounds on him will do wonders when a shorter but heavier guy is posting him up.

Patrick Bade
Tacos
Donnie Hale
Lawson
Calasan
Chris Reid
Marcius
Simpson
Taylor

These are the 3 star big men Painter has recruited. We can say rankings don't matter, but the 4 star big guys and one 5 star (JJ, AJH, Haas, Biggie) have clearly been much better. Taylor is the only 3 star big man who is still active, so time will tell, but the rest were ok backups as upperclassmen or worse. Best was probably Calasan, a JC transfer who averaged around 6 points and 3 rebounds in his 2 years in WL.

All of that said, this guy sounds and looks unique, different from anyone above. I hope he develops and becomes the next Dirk. Regardless, I think it's pretty unlikely he is an impact player early in his career. We need some impact players, particularly a guard (or 2) who can create their own shot. I'm hoping CMP can get some early impact along with long term potential in 2017.

reminds me of Toni Kukoc.

Did you ever see Ten Dam play? He couldn't hit one five foot jumpshot out of ten. Haarms is good out to three point line. No comparison at all.
I did see Matt ten Dam play. I'm pretty sure if you didn't see him play, you wouldn't have any reason to know his name.

WELCOME MATT HAARMS!!!

Love getting another giant for the post. Feeling good about this pick up, and a bit relieved.

And yes, let's get another!

BOILER UP!
Again, you're unlikely to see this guy as a typical post big man like AJ or Haas.
He's going to be a guy who hangs around the perimeter, creates match up problems, etc, but I doubt you'll see him protecting the rim or clearing people out underneath. He'll certainly take advantage of the post if that's what the matchup dictates but, just b/c he's 7'2, doesn't mean he's a low block, back to the basket post player.

Everyone is making sound like this guy is solely a perimeter player, He's got a great shot from outside which is unique for men of his size, but I expect painter will develop him into a player like Frank Kaminsky. A player that can definitely shoot from 3, but also be a scoring threat in the paint.

That would be very unique, but great.

He's a lefty. Coach Painter seems to love leftys.
I have watched that for some time. I truly believe that when all is equal, Matt prefers a lefty. There are several reasons "why" that preference could exist...such as better floor balance for strong hands depending on whether the opposing team forces sideline or turns inside (which is rare) AND not crossing your body in defending the right handed player since most are more tuned into the strong hand. I have said this for some time that Matt appears to prefer left handed player as Purdue has recruited many more than the 10% population would suggest. It could be coincidental, but it might not... :)

I wonder if CMP believes that a natural lefty is a naturally better ball-handler than a righty. I see many lefties using their right hand for numerous things (scissors, writing, etc) that righties just don't do.

Haarms is skinny but with his length and average quickness he should be able to guard most 4s unless they can really shoot and are quick.
Also at 7'2 he should be able to guard 5s cause of his length.
I'm not sure if his three point shot will be good enough to immediately make an impact but if nothing else he looks like he'll have a good mid range game and appears fairly nimble so I cannot complain.

Who else has been a lefty on the team?

I like this pickup. From his videos, his shot from beyond 3 and ball handling look really good.

From an article I read, he went to play for a year in Spain or something like that. He came in thinking he'd play down low but they said they had a center and he better learn to play on the perimeter. Looks like he learned pretty well. I think it helps that he has grown like 8 inches or so in high school. That sounds like he might have been a guard at one point that has grown into a big 4.

He also said he wants to put on weight to be in the 240 range. I think he'd stay as nimble that way but really put on good muscle to hold his own in the B1G, plus Jon B. is an amazing trainer.

Obviously Frank K and Durant are long shot expectations but you can see similarities even at this early age.

I think we are all missing the obvious.

From: Amsterdam (-6 ft elevation)

Currently resides: Kansas (flat as hell)

Other offers: Washington St, Colorado, Vanderbilt. All within a couple hrs of mountains.

Add it up. Recruiting is all about mountains. In this case, a severe distaste for them.

In 8 games for 2015 FIBA, Haarms average 4.5 pts. And something like 3.5 rebounds. One 3 pointer in those games. Yep, Dirk like numbers. And he is no Tony Kucoc.

You guys need to make up your mind. First Painter can't win for going after the 5 star recruits, now he can't win because he did and should of gone after the 3 and 4 stars. Make up your mind please.
Just different fans with different ideas

Did Matt ten Dam's name come up anywhere yet? That's all I can think of with this commitment.
If your serious, he has the Same height and nationality as Ten Dam. Similarities end there. Totally different athletic ability, body type, and skills. If your simply dumping on Purdue, never mind.

I am With you except I think he could be a good rim protector. Could be very good at off ball shot blocking.
Will be an interesting addition.

I'm impressed with this kid! Sure he is skinny but how often do you see a kid with this size that can dribble and shoot as well as he does? I notice right away that he has good touch and good form on his shot. This kid could develop into a great player!

in my experience and I realize that is anecdotal in playing, working with or coaching...lefties are usually not as good with their off hand since many right handers are used to overplaying the right handed players...but that may not be accurate at all

did you mean who was recruited or who actually played for Purdue under Matt that was a lefty? Course Ronnie Johnson was a lefty and I can't recall if Simpson was or not...Jaquil Taylor is. There have been others...many recruits. I know this as I have an IU fan at work and I used to tell him that Purdue was recruiting another lefty and it just didn't fit the random chance of 10% population. I'm probably more aware of oddities with statistics than many... :) If I get bored and go through the recruiting in the past the Chi Square will show the observed much higher than the expected...

Painter said he liked lefties all the way back to Martin's recruitment
I wasn't aware of that...I'm just more tuned into statistics than many and it appeared he did based on having an eye to see...

Not dumping on anything or anyone. Just said I was reminded of Matt ten Dam.

There is a muscle-memory on defense to block the right hand because that is what you do most of the time ... it just takes a quarter of a second for your mind to figure it out, but most still start out going for the right hand ...

Also, many lefties are really anomalous dominant ... that means they "should" be right handed, but aren't - if that makes sense. It has to do with right-eye dominant or not. Anyway, they do tend to develop better right hands because they should have been right handed.

I’m right handed and left eye dominant. Used to be able to run the table in 8 ball on a snooker table shooting one handed, shoot a long gun right handed and the basketball. Not sure whether it was compensation over time or not? In my anecdotal sampling (and I realize the errors with that) many lefties had an advantage of favoring the left and the defenders were more used to guarding right handed players from habit. The habit did not put as much continual overplay on lefties as right handed players on right handers which was the norm. I think that "may" be a reason why it appears to me that lefties may not be as good going right as right handers going left? If a player that is right handed and goes for blocks (AJ?)…getting to the ball with his off hand (left hand) does not cross his body and makes it less likely to foul a right handed player if you are a player that favors your strong hand and are right handed. Although I think there are some subtle advantages to being a rim protector and being left handed (Bill Russel), I think the real advantage is on the offense for 1 through 4 anyway. There you can take a right handed player and a left handed player and both being able to be on the side of the court that suits them best for their game…assuming most lefties drive better with their left hand and most right handed players drive better with their right hands. THAT balance in the court is where all things being equal…having a lefty may provide an edge? It may not be huge, but it may be an edge…70% of all offenses used to start on the right side with a pass to the wing...
