Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

We shall see in the conference. As of now they haven’t done anything with their minutes besides being exposed by good teams. I am ok being wrong.
I mean there's no doubt they need to pick it up. And maybe they are better as role players than starters, but they are absolutely talented and I certainly hope they stay. I just hope the light comes on and they figure out how to be more consistent.

CJ Cox ends up leading the team in scoring with 16 (3/5 from deep) 7/7 FT's.....wasn't in crunch time, but maybe it's a spark - he does need more minutes. Burgess 7/4 in mop-up duty.

Auburn, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, A & M going to have some battles - Ole Miss and Mississippi State can play as well. SEC is cashing in these days.

If it helps. Auburn has a lot more NIL money. Plus they committed to be good basketball a few years ago.

The 2019 team had Virginia all but beat in the Final Four - I have my issues with Pearl for a number of reasons, but he can flat out coach, and they have a terrific roster this season.

Tex: I give CMP a pass this year. He obviously thought the 2 frosh and 2 soph were ready to play at this level. However, if he doesn't go portal for help next year, that will be a different story.

I hear you Dry - plus two other things out of his control with Jacobsen's injury and Catchings' late decommit. I will be surprised if there isn't one this year, but two or three?......don't know about that - just going by what Painter has repeatedly said.

I also get that people disagree with his philosophy surrounding the portal and/or NIL.

The way this team is playing, I can see them finishing about .500 in league play. Won’t go undefeated at home, but will win most, and, will find wins on the road to be few.

Indiana, Michigan, and Rutgers (x2 each).....done with Maryland and Penn State

Single-plays left:

Home - NW, Nebraska, Ohio State, USC, Wisconsin, and UCLA

Away - Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, Iowa, Michigan State, and Illinois

Your guess is as good as mine, Doc.

I'm with you on 2 or 3, I doubt he will do it. But I can still hope!!

There's nice pieces to this team, truly, but those who think we can stand pat and just have our sophs blow up next year aren't watching the same games I am.

This team needs more athleticism in the worst way. We look slow against these types of teams.
Purdue was much slower than Auburn and was sped up. I hope Purdue gets to play them again. 😁

How can we never get Colvin or Heide going to the rim? Every other team manages it. We have the 2 best leapers on the court and we dont get them anything downhill. Reduced to jumpshooting. Mind boggling. Of course they rape us on the perimeter, we never punish it!
And Purdue never back cuts or has many back screens. It is as though Zach is back there and so out behind the arc allowing D to be overly aggressive

Things we won't have to worry about:

1. Smith leaving early to the NBA
2. TKR leaving early
3. Team getting a big head from being ranked

Having said that, this team, I think there's something going on. I don't have any predictions but feels like one or two players will transfer end of season. It feels like someone is going to be frustrated by end of year.
So ?

It would help if the athletes scored some
TJ, what do you see in the offensive sets tho? I just see Colvin and Heide not even looking to shoot or attack. Not even dribble with purpose to a spot or break their man down. They either get the ball and look for the next step in the offensive set, which is usually to Loyer or Smith OR they stand in the corner and watch TKR back down his man or Loyer or smith try to create something that’s not there.

I assume paint is trying to run stuff through the big 3, but Colvin and Heide are absolutely non existent at times. And vs teams that apply a lot of pressure, those 2 could be an X factor to break down that type of defense.

We are way too reliant on Braden making something happen. I liked the end where Paint ran stuff for the two freshmen. We need to do more of that for Heide and Colvin.
Hell, just run it for anyone to be able to go get their shot or a good, open shot. We don’t have a dominant scorer who can score every night (ideally TKR could, but he needs help).

I would draw up plays for the other dudes and let the big 3 get theirs in the flow of the game. We rely way too much on Braden creating.
Trey isn’t Zach and doesn’t create the same problems Zach did pick and roll to allow as many opportunities for Braden to find others. Purdue has to get more scoring out of Myles and Cam and not necessarily behind the arc

SEC never embraced the whole "student athlete" thing and in today's world they will thrive. Amazing Pearl is now a saint after his shenanigans at UT. It's a new world with pay to play and unlimited free agency.

I’m on a phone and won’t type much which many will appreciate. Matt gives a LOT of freedom to his coaches and have no idea how much influence PJ has. That said, prior to Zach Purdue ran things for Dakota coming off pin downs and many coming off of off ball screens. Matt has a lot of sets that don’t involve high ball screens by the 5 as most his career did not involve such. Perhaps he needs to incorporate some of those as well? Are there times he just has a designated screener that slips, dives and pops when more in motion.

Bottom line is that Purdue needs counters against pressure as a team and traditionally that has been a weaker area of Matt’s IMO. You have to back off the pressure, especially if the refs are slow with the pea to counter. Second, might get by with one player not scoring, but not two. Need to get something out of Myles and cam on offense. I’m typing this while at father in law’s Christmas gathering. 😊

There are two more athletic players for Purdue and they are Cam and Myles and neither are adding much offense.
Different kinds of athleticism. They are both leapers for sure and both can be good on defense.

Neither seem very creative on the drive or getting their own shot off the dribble. For Heide it's either thunder slam attempt or three. Colvin is similar although he does get the occasional hustle putback.

I'm not seeing them take their guy and break them down off the dribble.

They are not doing those things. They should…can they? Do they not have confidence in their dribbling? If so, that is lack of skill because they are explosive enough and should be playing around the rim. If you are playing small, you better be skilled AND quick . Zach, Braden and Fletcher had similar roles as last year with Trey playing as he did when Zach was not on the court. This year Cam and Myles cannot just stand behind the arc because Trey is not as dominant as Zach and so it is new experiences for Cam and Myles. Now throw in the freshmen and lose the one to defend the rim and Purdue is vulnerable to a certain type of team play.

I’ve not given up on the team, but they have to counter pressure better and have to get more out Myles and Cam. CJ will continue to get minutes IMO and have a good year
