Purdue vs. Auburn: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Glad we let Catchings leave

At some point you have to play the other guys (Harris, Cox, Colvin, and Cam) and let them take shots.

The offense as it stands today won’t get it done if those guys aren’t able to score

Colvin and Heide are both streaky players right now. They tease with a great 15 pts high impact game and then go into hibernation for 3 games

Colvin and Heide are great teammates, And like you say show occasional promise. They are tremendous Boilers, but perhaps need to be bench players on a great team instead of starters on a good team.

Catchings left on his own.

If you cant dribble a basketball under pressure, and you cant dribble by someone 1 on 1 and get to the basket, you are a liability on the court unless youbare the center.

We have 1 guy that can do that but he actually cant get to the rim with it vs elite teams.

That is what it boils down too. Not lack of athletes or size. Those would be nice too, but its the lack of 3 level players

Starting to develop some frustration with the team and especially Painter. We are not playing a lot of games and have plenty of practice time. We absolutely cannot rely totally on Smith, TKR and Loyer. I kept track and in the first half Colvin and Heide did not touch the ball in our half court until almost 5 minutes in. Painter has to fix this. We are playing 3 on 5 on offense.

and TKR misses free throws and cant guard, so its not even that good.

I refrained from agreeing with this. But @bonefish1 is right and so are you. We need those two to do more and the offensive sets we have aren’t working…if they somehow start working in the B1G, I’ll reverse course. But man, we have to do something different than running these long offensive sets that depend on getting the ball back to the PG and then shoot something at the 3-7 second mark of the shot clock.

Colvin and Heide (I don’t think through their own fault) just stand out watching the big 3 and don’t even look to attack. When colvin somewhat did in the first half, he got a fouled called (granted he miss the FT). But I think the offense is not set up for Colvin and Heide to attack or look for their own shot.

Hopefully we can somehow change this offensive strategy this year, but if not, it def needs to change next year.

And also, @bonefish1 and @qazplm,I tried to fight it, but I’m now with you both. We need to hit the portal for at least 2-3 scorers. I apologize for arguing about it 😂 you both were right.

Colvin stands in the corner Heide just stands around too

I can't remember the dude but some guard was on this podcast that wanted to go to Syracuse but Boeheim gave him a speech that he wouldn't start. Went elsewhere and played in the NBA. Even Keady knew Big Dog had to have different rules than Linc Darner.
Catchings would have helped this team but he was a basket case that I just don't think would have been happy here and his play would have showed it. I don't think he wanted to be here.

If you're gonna only recruit high school players you better do it better than Morehouse and wherever the hell Dalton Knetch came from. And dare I say Lance Jones?

My only question is....is it Painter restraining them or is it the players...or both???

Maybe some of these soft players are too happy to be here knowing they get 4 or 5 years

I'm not going to call anyone soft. Being soft isn't the problem, lack of athleticism at key spots is. Neither Heide or Colvin are particularly quick or creative on drives. They certainly are great leapers and they can shoot the open shot but they aren't intuitive drivers and that limits them both.

When we have a dominant attention grabbing big it doesn't matter as much because it opens things up for everyone. But we don't so we try to scheme them open which works against lesser defensive teams but not against the better defenses.

The frosh will be nice pieces but none of them are remotely ready. Jacobsen helps some, but we will need more if this team wants to get back to the elite 8 or better.

Painter will need to bite the bullet and be willing to bring in a portal player or two.

I agree. We all are who we are. Athleticism is lacking, doesn't make you soft. I recant. All great kids on this team.

Need 2 or 3

Man Edey was good. He made this shitshow competitve. The lack of talent and plan is totally exposed now. It is like we took Smith and TKR and surrounded them with Njoel Eastern clones.
