Purdue at Northwestern: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Sucks seeing our guards get man handled again. I think this sums up that guards win. Our POTY played good but to many TO's from everyone. NW plays through the guards and that's why they had less TO's. It'll continue to be our nemesis.

When guys can’t make basic plays, make open shots, and turnover and over……. not really on the coach

Two times they beat us as number 1, crazy
You can use that excuse when Purdue hasn't laid carbon copy eggs year after year under CMP. But its not an excusable excuse any longer. This is now a pattern and patterns are on coaches...

Turnovers are our Achille's heel. NW had so many more posessions than we did. Mental breakdowns. Jones hurt us in the last few minutes of regulation.
In fairness, Jones had two three pointers half way down come out, too many turnovers down the stretch.

42 minutes for Smith?
Excellent distribution of minutes Paint!

The turnovers and breakdowns are because CMP forces kids to play to a system, not organic basketball when it makes more sense to do so. Stuff is forced and then the play is contrived. We play the best when we are in rhythm of the various moments and players are thriving on momentum.

makes a 72 ft er but goes 1 - 7 from 3

Painter didn't commit the turnovers. That is on the players. Buie turned up and is a gamer, who is ours? The players have to find that in themselves and decide to win. If they do that great things will happen this season. If they don't, FDU all over again.

No mid range game , drive/float etc, so jamm Z and we hit terrible 3s, bbal come to a screeching halt because there’s no one to get there own shot like NW guard, crap

kind of agree, let em run instead of slow down and force to our Center w/ bad passers like Loyer

Prob what Purdue needs to take care of Iowa at home and going into Zona, likely to get back to #1. We weren't gonna go undefeated. Sucks losing to Collins again but payback coming for him in Mackey.

So if Purdue loses the rest of the season because of turnovers is that CMP's fault? Even though we have seen this scenario time after time? Such a weak thing to say "The coach didn't miss those shots" lol come on my guy...

no in game adjustments. I don't bash on CMP, but he really needs to look in the mirror and realize there are more ways to play defense. Giving up that many points to a team that will be lucky to make the tournament is ridiculous.
On ball guard defense let us down, particularly on switches. Would have liked to see zone against Buie.

When he puts the players in constant bad situations, year after year, yes...he is equally at fault for those turnovers.

Loyer's mile and a half pass into Edey that was deflected was the back breaker. Add that to none of our usually good defending guards could find Boo Buie's shadow, and that seals it.

Buie's butt foul on Loyer was a piece of work that the refs bought. What a joke!

Ugh

Our guards are also just not elite, been sayin it since 2021 recruiting season

Coolaid?

I have to hand it to Painter. He's managed for 2 years in a row now to surround his 7'4 NPOTY with what has to be the slowest, most unathletic, and worst shooting power 5 lineup in the country. It truly takes something special to trot out multiple lineups who can't stay in front ANY of Northwestern's guards, or hit a wide open jumper.

The one guy we do have who can get around the defense on occasion refused to take no fewer than 5 wide open layups, choosing instead to pass it out from directly under the hoop so that Jones, Furst, or Gillis could brick another wide open 3.

Gave NW's their first and 2nd and back to back wins against #1 teams. It's incredible. VCU, Little Rock, North Texas, St. Peters, and The 2nd team in history ever to lose to a number 16 in FDU... The 20 point comeback from Iowa back in the AJ Hammons days... We could keep going talking about deer in headlight losses... At some point there is no way you can continue to defend these types of losses...
