12 seasons, any game played in the month of March, 30-33. Winning % = 47.6%

His overall winning % at Purdue = 65%

Hmmm. No one can argue he has had "tournament success" especially 2 Sweet 16s in 12 years. We will see if he can get to 3, but I think there are too many holes.

Matt painter is the Chuck Pagano of College Basketball. Get him some good players he will win some good games, but there is no way he is going to every get you a deep tourney run. He overthinks everything and fukks up too often

I'm guessing we lose in a 12/5 matchup again.

Whats the old saying about insanity... Oh yeah expecting Painter to actually be a good coach even though he proves he is shit every year since the Baby Boilers graduated.

You guys have some really short memories. I kind of expect that on this board because a lot of you love to be reactionary. It wasn't long ago that we were one of the worst free throw and three point shooting teams in the country. We went to the cbi and got beat in the second game in front of our home crowd. Now he puts together one of the best teams we've had in a very long time and you people want to hang the loss on him.

A top 10 free throw shooting team in the country has an uncharacteristically bad day and that's on Painter? Wagner, a guy who absolutely killed us the first game was the focus of the game plan and he was shut down. Wilson went off as a side effect of that but you can't take everything away. Painter recruited size to be able to pound the ball inside and it worked but that leaves us vulnearble to guarding the perimeter, Michigan is just a bad matchup with their stretch bigs. Grow up, accept that Michigan is a bad matchup and stop blaming blown layups, missed wide open threes, and missed free throws on Painter. All of those things uncharacteristic for the team this year.

We will get stuck with by far the best 12 seed, and they will play the game of their life against us. We've all seen this movie unfortuntely
I am sick of people saying so and so team plays the game of their lives against us. Do you think its the way we play in March is the reason these teams blown up against us?! The tourney is about players and coaching, we don't have the latter

I would pick us still, but the 12/5 line is the worst opening game for a "good team". Since 1985, just as many 6 seeds have advanced past round 1 as 5 seeds while 4 seeds advance 15.5% more often than either.

It is how they play in one and done, pressure, situations. His teams also regress as a season goes on. Hitting 90% of your F-T in November against NJIT does not matter. How you hit F-T in win or go home games in March does. The stats are completely inflated. And lets celebrate the shooting % improvement, great. We have become one of the more abysmal defensive teams in Purdue history. If I have to see one more graphic this year of some mope where it says "Career high 8, Today 35" I am going to go crazy!

Matt Painter is the Gene Keady of Purdue basketball.
Gene was a mainstay in the 2nd round of the NCAA. All those late 90s teams where they would upset someone like Miami, win Saturday/Sunday then have to play a lower seed like Wisconsin or Temple and you think we can go to Elite 8 or Final 4 and we would blow the game we were supposed to win, win 2 we were supposed to lose.

I do see the parallels though. Both are good coaches and won a lot of regular season games. I think Purdue fans deserve a Final 4, but I can't see it ever happening with this style.

Just to be clear- I fully EXPECT Purdue to WIN its 1st round game regardless of the opponent.

Beyond that, I'll have to look at the bracket.

It is for CMP, who hasn't won a tourney game since Robbie Hummel was here. Well, to be fair he did win in the first round of the CBI 3 or 4 years ago.

Purdue wasn't a Big 10 champion in any of those years.

It took him 15 years to get to an Elite 8, and he got to two in 25 years. We just have to give Painter more time.

Then I don't know how to help you if you don't see people predicting us losing our first game in this thread.

2 people did, as far as I can tell. If you want to get with them, great. You'll make $100 for a worthy cause. Or maybe you'll pay $100. It's still not setting the bar very high.

And, for the record, I don't need any help.

Apparently you do since you clearly couldn't understand the thread. That's ok. I'm patient and am willing to explain it to you.

I like numbers too. Among active coaches with at least 20 games in the NCAA tourney (there's 27 of them), only 21 have winning % higher than 50% in the tourney. Painter is not on the list because he has only coached 17 games in the NCAA tournament.

In those 17 games, he is 8-9 for a 0.47 winning percentage - which would place him at 26th. Of the coaches above Painter, 10 have had prolific success in recruiting.

I would also like to note that of the coaches above Painter, 7 have either been punished for major NCAA sanctions (eg. Sampson) or the school later had NCAA sanctions levied against them after the coach left (eg. Calipari, Fisher)

So basically, winning in the NCAA is hard! Recruiting is a big key, but even successful recruiting (wink-wink) requires some luck to win.

Curious?

Ya'll keep talking about these flameouts? How many of those were we even favored to win?

VCU
Ark- Little Rock
Cincinnati

Seems for awhile we kept eventual running into the NCAA Champion!

Might add that he is 8-8 at Purdue.

Wow an anti Painter thread? I've been saying this for years and I have always been getting ripped for it. The guy can't coach in big games it's a fact. Let's just hope Biggie is good enough to take this squad deep because Painter certainly won't help.
