My take on Iowa

Don't let these Iowa fans fool you into thinking they're something special because they're not and neither is their team. If you like fans who boo injured players and create enough noise so the opposing team can't hear signals then you'll fit right in. They know who the better team was Saturday, they know....

So fans aren't supposed to make noise to disrupt the opponent?

You not only are visiting HawkeyeReport but are coming onto our next opponent's message board to whine/ sulk? Sorry our crowd was too loud for your team? GTFO of here loser, these Purdue fans DGAF about you and your fans' feelings.

That script is the same for Iowa. Very good defense, not good on offense. It should be a very interesting game, and I like our chances.

As you indicate, hope Purdue comes out of it healthy for a 2nd half run.
I'd say Iowa is better than Purdue on both sides of the ball. Yes, defense is better for both, but not equally.

Coming to a 3rd team's forum to troll a 2nd team is quite the definition of loser.

Aren't fans supposed to make noise?

You lost. Deal with it. How dare Iowa fans create noise when you're on offense.

I’m worried about David Bell. Really tough talent.
Good luck, but not too much ;)
Short passes in front of our corners have been a big PITA. If the interior line can split the DL and create a running lane for extra yards for the QB on pass plays, it even adds to more frustration for the Iowa D.

It has been an "occasional" discussion topic around here...

In summary, we've had 4 upperclassmen OL retire from football within the past year due to injuries. There is a patch-work of transfers and younger guys stepping in to fill the holes. Recruiting of OL could have been better, but likely would have at least produced a serviceable line given average development, S&C, and overall health.

One poster pointed to Iowa as an example of young linemen playing early.
I really thought Iowa’s O Line started to come together the last 2.5 quarters vs psu. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking but our offense looked a lot better late in the game.
Good luck and please don’t spoil my trip I have planned to Indy😉

My honest take: The Iowa OL, while young, is very punishing and can last the whole game. They look better as the game goes on, not because they're settling down, but because they are really wearing down the opponents defensive line. They're running a marathon, while the opponents are running a 60 minute sprint.

Interestingly, the line, which was +14.5 when it came out after our last game, re-opened at +12.5 last night and has already been bet down to 11.5. To me that's surprising.

As to #1, I hope so as the small glimpse I got of the backup during garbage time vs Maryland was not pretty...Petras has gotten better, he is not great. If the initial option is open he throws a nice ball or makes a good decision to not throw it if he is not open. If option 1 is taken away he struggles. Hoping that gets better as he now has 14 starts under his belt.

As to #2, Adrian Martinez does not throw an accurate ball. That is a big plus to the way Iowa plays primarily zone defense and forces turnovers. Nebraska asks their QB to run the ball which usually bodes well for Iowa as by the time they get to the 12th game their QBs are little and sometimes a lot banged up. I'm hoping that continues :)

Safe travels to any of you heading to Iowa City this weekend!!
Oh so that’s what it is! Parker is in zone and brohm has been beating the zone

I have a lot of respect for what ferentz does and for what they do in a locale similar to west Lafayette.. probably worse in the sense that they aren’t 2 hours from Chicago and one hour from indy.

what we are missing in terms of line of scrimmage play on offense, they have always been missing in terms of imaginative play calling and alignments. That’s why we have a chance.

our offense vs their defense

approach 1 (more likely) - they play our run with four down lineman and maybe 2 LBs playing cleanup or one spying the run. They are content to give up 100 rushing yards like Minnesota did if it allows them to back their coverage up and not get beat by the deep throws brohm has beat them with for four years.

approach 2 (more scary) - they play up close, try to take away short routes and bring horrific pressure to Oconnell. Oconnell actually had one play where he saw a corner blitz coming and wanted to go to a hot route to the WR but the WR never saw the ball. That showed me how far good college passing games are from the NFL.

either way, points will be tough to come by. If the OL made any progress, I think we can get 27 if we play well

their offense vs our D - they’ve got a problem. Petras. Petras is probably more physically gifted than plummer, but the game happens pretty slow for him and he’s not an accurate passer. George is a world beater both ways. Far superior to any penn state DL. That makes running the ball and therefore play action difficult … because the other three linemen are stout.

Petras will have to pass on us straight up to win this game. In previous seasons I’d say “okay, he can hit the TE. But when your coverage team is gonna he brown, Mackey and Graham across the WRs/TE, I’m not anticipating busted coverages or gimmes.

I respect Iowa a lot and I think they have superior football players across their 85, and yeah.. we may have some things to terribly wrong (bad turnovers on offense), but if we can avoid those things I think we have a shot in this game. Should be a good one. Or a bad one if we throw a couple pick sixes
Purdue and Iowa rivalry is deeper than the deepest of a place that knows no bounds. The day the legend and leader collided with great force out came a hatred for the likes we have never before seen on this planet earth.

I was so enjoying my time on the Purdue board as per usual. Good discussion all around and then I see your pathetic whiny ass on here.
God you pedos at insufferable.

17 points in 17.5 minutes with Clifford.
3 points in 42.5 minutes with Roberson.
It was 17-10 when Roberson came in. Not exactly a blowout. No one knows how the game would have played out.
Iowa has knocked 5 of 6 starting qb's out of the game this year.
Parker is one of the best in the biz, Iowa D is lights out second half.

I don't think Purdue's HC is a classless d-bag who coaches his players to fake injuries, soooo, enjoy Kinnick Purdue fans, it's a great environment!

I've made a killing on Iowa this year. After the game Saturday I told my friends at the Tailgate to take Purdue.

It's a recipe for a close game, possible upset. Iowa may very well have a hangover against a team/coach that has their number coming off a bye week thirsty for a chance at #2.

I'm much more worried about this game than I was vs Indiana or Maryland.

Just looked at the box scores of your games, you have a very formidable passing game. Causes great concern considering the results of the last few years.

You’re right. I think Penn State probably is the better team. But we won the game. Go Hawks.

So is this a game where you put Plummer back in as starter, let him dink and dunk down the field, punt when nothing is open, and make Iowa go 80 yards? I'm looking at those 16 INT's by Iowa and thinking a sure fire way to lose this game is by throwing a couple picks early. Do you try to keep it close and scrape out a 13-10 win? Or do you throw caution to the wind?

When the Nebraska AD fired Bo Pellini after they beat us in OT in 2014 I think it was, he made a comment of something to the effect of "we had to evaluate where Iowa was" meaning beating us wasn't important enough to them. Rumor has it that Ferentz was none too happy with that comment. We've run off 6 straight since then and just always seem to have a different gear with Nebraska from that point on.
Please keep it up. Nebraska fans are right up there with the golden domers. Both live in the past and are completely full of themselves.
