Tom Crean is out and the single funniest punchline in college basketball is gone. It was GURRRREAT having him in Bloomington for 9 years, and one can only hope that IU hires Bozo the Clown or Krusty the Clown or some other doofus we can laugh at year in and year out.

Comedy ain't dead there. They just fired the headliner. The rest of the cast, crew, and participating audience are still in place.

IU fires a coach that won the B1G championship last year. Think about that. Candidate coaches for the job in Bloomington will.

If McDonald isn't Crean's successor, a Pat Knight or a Dave Bliss would be a home-run pick up for them.

But seriously, who is IU going to get to replace him? Is there any worthy candidate available right now? They can't go out and hire a no-name coach, or the fanbase will have a fit. Their delusion of luring Brad Stevens away from the Celtics ain't coming true. I can't think of a single college coach that fits their taste, and seriously doubt any former NBA coach worth their salt would be interested in the job. Trying to fill Crean's space may be the bigger comedy than firing him

Winning the Big means a lot if that is all you have ever done. Expectations are much higher in Bloomington and they will hold out for a good coach. Obviously Purdue and most coach's hoped this day would never come...

I ventured over to Inside the Hall after the presser to see what was going on. Those people are on some serious mind altering drugs.

Some of my favorites below:

Mark Cuban is going to foot the bill to make sure Brad Stevens is their next coach.

Brad Stevens has a clause in his contract to walk away from the Celtics if IU offers him.

If the IU fanbase's expectations are to win a national championship then IU has failed to live up to those expectations for 30 straight years. At some point the reality that Bob Knight was IU basketball will sink in and expectations will align.

So given your logic what should be Purdue's expectations??
The expectations on Purdue athletics is very low. Just look at the football program and women's basketball. If Painter had Creams resume he would be a lifetime coach here.

Fred Glass is a smart guy and I think he had someone lined up before firing Crean, possibly Steve Alford. He just needs to wait until UCLA is knocked out of the tourney before doing anything.

Alford already said no. Plus he has 2 more Bell brothers coming in over the next 3 years.

I think he will use it as leverage for more money at UCLA

Wrong.

Think I'm pi$$ing in the wind? Nope....

but I am still waiting for TwinDegrees to weigh in on the multiple other threads where he blabbered on about how Crean would never get fired, that he had 'inside sources', and that he used to be an IU fan, not solely a RMK fan.

I wonder if the standards are high enough here @ Purdue where a coach would be let go 1 year after winning a B1G title where the next team flounders and makes the NIT.

I doubt it.

If you mosey over to the IU hoops forum, Alford is the most mentioned right now.
I know - I have seen they crazy over there. I have also seen them talk about how Brad Stevens is their guy too. Oh and Gregg Marshall and Billy Donovan.

I believe when he met with the trustees et al - he told them what he believed their likely options where and how much it would cost them. Delivering will be another question.

If Purdue had lost two starters for the year to injury and another starter missed a bunch of games due to injury then Purdue (and just about any other team) would've been in the NIT as well. Crean took over a program in complete shambles and made it a very competitive one. IU fans think their program is Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and etc. It isn't and I've got 30 straight years of results to prove it.

Still you have to admire the standards of the AD @ iu -- they know what they want and if you have a 1 year slip..... not tolerated even with injuries.

Got to give it to iu AD = high standards. Purdue has slipped plenty of times and only 1 coach change in decades. And do not think this is anything against Painter...it is not. Just admiring the desire to achieve high standards @ iu and the lack of not tolerating a coach losing a team & an NIT.

Well, personally, my standards include shaking Opponent Coach's and players hands after a loss, not aggressively confronting another team's assistant coach, not groping myself on national TV, not eating chewing gum off the floor, not allowing my players to intentionally trip players on the other team, coaching some defense... oh and being selected as COY in Conference 3 times as well as winning a conference title that you mentioned. But we all have our own personal standards

We all agree the guy was a jerk. But he has been a jerk since day 1. That apparently was not why he was gone, as he has always been a jerk.....

They let him go because he lost the team and ended up with a losing team in the NIT........1 year after winning a B1G title.

And I would argue that Crean never learned that just because a kid is highly ranked doesn't make him a good fit. I could name at least one of the players but you would have to be blind not to see it yourself. I used to laugh during blowouts either way when this particular player kept jacking shots to keep his scoring average up. Then he would completely disappear for a game. Talent in the midst of anarchy won't win you games.

Yeah, but remember "It's Indiana".... It takes their fans a lot longer to figure things out than the rest of the B1G:D

But that was just it....that kid was a perfect fit for Crean. When you do not know how to win(long term) & you want to play AAU ball, a highly ranked kid that jacks it up and plays no D is a perfect fit for your team.

However, iu finally realized this just is not what we want at iu.....when it has been apparent for years to all. Crean is not a fit for any winning program.

Don't puff your chest out too far. You don't know what Glass is going to do. Just sit back on the couch, press play on the VCR, and watch your 3 hour video and of the banners. We will watch the games and let you know how they go.
