Leads are Overrated

Never seen a Purdue team so prone to coughing up the first half leads - same story with Marquette, Tennessee, Maryland.. Don’t know if they’re getting tired or letting their foot off the gas pedal. Same story in the second half - going to give me a heart attack.

Regardless, I’m impressed with the moxy of the Boilers. They’ve fought back in true prize fighter fashion. Big Haas come off the mat and throws a couple down. Maryland was extremely physical and we answered the bell repeatedly in the second half.

Awesome to get a road win to start off the Big Ten campaign. Let’s hunt a Wildcat hide on Sunday.

Cline not playing his normal game and 2 freshmen off the bench cause a great drop off in ability. Eifert didn't contribute much either. But still a good and needed win. Wish Taylor had played some. Needed his rebounding.

Eifert didn’t get in the game.

officials are over rated too LOL
When I saw two of the refs I thought they generally did a good job and the other...has never been really poor. That said...they sucked the last couple of minutes on the ball going out of bounds on Maryland, and the three point basket and the lunge into Haarms that should have been a no call. Because Haarms was in the arc..Cowan LUNGED at him and the refs enable stupidy to rise again. Still HAAS came up BIG.
Generally, the team played well this was a BIG game...one of the two or three toughest in the Big I expect this year. Carsen makes some plays others can't...but there was NO need to be up 7 or 9 and drive the baseline for a quick shot. You have a 30 second clock and are in double bonus. The clock was Maryland's enemy. Purdue uses more clock...it helps Purdue and leaves less clock to make an effective offense for Maryland that wanted to drive the ball and stop that clock that got a little extra time due to that baseline drive...

Was very surprised they reversed that late out-of-bounds call. At MOST, I thought it was 50/50 between Edwards and Jackson. And the original call was Purdue ball.
50-50 if you decide by going one for me and one for you. Off Maryland players right hand it certainly appeared

They (officials) made it interesting........I thought Carsen was also fouled on his "errant" pass in the back court late in the game. Oh well, life on the road. Nice points TJ......as always.

I can at times be so impressed with Carsens quick drives in transition, but there are times...I would be purple with some of the mental things he does...

Good point. That probably would have been a foul in Mackey Arena.

Refs did their part to keep Maryland from not getting blow out in the first half...12 free throws to Purdue’s 2. That ended up being a 7 point difference as Maryland hit 9 of them.

Also, Maryland turns the ball over 7 times the whole game while they average 17. Ten more possessions for Purdue and this game isn’t close.

while you're at it...a few moving screens by Fernando or whoever that were missed

With officiating now focusing more on helping the offense, as Robbie said the 3 point shot is even more important now. Leads can quickly evaporate because of all of that too, just look at the ND/MSU game as an example.

I'm not too overly concerned about a lead disappearing because it's going to happen. The key indicator is how the team responds and other than the Bahamas, the team has responded well I think.

True, but Haarms should have gotten out of the way. OR if you are going to foul, at least make damn sure he doesn't make the shot!

Very true. Haarms will learn. I think he was trying not to foul and went straight up, which gave Cowan the green light to pull a Trimble and jump straight into him to draw a foul.

Over time he will learn he can block a tiny guards layup most of the time if he takes a better angle in that situation and just goes for the block.

Right. He got turned around and got in a vulnerable position. Cowan made an impressive play to take advantage.

The one thing I can’t stand that hasn’t been addressed is the obvious running in to the guy guarding the ball as it is being brought up the court. If his intent to obstruct the defensive player, how is that not a moving screen?

How about a moving screen to force a switch that can be taught? Imagine a ball screen at the top of the arc and the screener screens and holds the screen for a second by doing a double screen by reverse pivoting in into the guy screened if he tries to get over the top (since you were popping out) or if he goes under the screen as you reverse into him again to roll to the bucket...as the screener just reads the guy he screened? ;) The screener reverse pivots for the second screen into the original guy to be screened as he either pops out of rolls to the bucket...just to get another half a second advantage... ;)
