In reading the Indy Star I have noticed the lack of coverage on PU/BB, especially over the last few weeks. No mention of Purdue victories, but will cover the most minuscule detail of IU, (McRoberts article) as an example with no mention of Purdue's win over Lipscomb....I see this over and over.
It is sad since we are the #1 team in the state. I live out state, Indy late coverage might be better, but I doubt it. Your thoughts!!!!!

There is a reason it is referred to as IU Star. If it wasn't for this board I couldn't have told you what the Indy newspaper was.

If you are looking for ANY news why are you looking at a newspaper anyway? ;-P

Not being disrespectful to your post here just stating the obvious. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

...and in related news, water is wet and the sky is blue. We are never going to get any respect in that paper until one thing happens.

To quote Jake Taylor from Major League......"Well, I guess there's only one thing left to do......Win the whole bleeping Thing."

The good news is we have several other resources for our basketball fix-Twitter,message boards, blogs, etc...unlike years ago when they really dictated what people read which was typically an heavy IU bias.

The Indianapolis Star …
It’s been known to hold an anxious puppy … who looks, turns a page, then just walks away.
It’s been known to line a bird cage … making parakeets scream like the whistles in swayback hall.
It’s been known to retain the excrements of the Goober Pile Skool of Jurnelusm … inbred staff.
It’s been known to base coverage on reader hits … yet Boilers know to never look there.
It’s been known to discontinue sending reporters to Purdue … while tripling trips to helltown.
It’s been known to borrow and butcher the works of its Lafayette sister … buried down in back.
It’s been known to force its pandering propaganda upon said sister … turning her ugly as well.
It’s been known to force itself upon recruits … peppering them with adulation for hilljack high.
It’s been known to function as hilljack’s biggest booster and forever active recruiter… yet that’s somehow gone unknown by the NCAA, despite also being headquartered right there in good ole Naptown.

If Purdue won it all they would still report that IU has 5 banners to our 1.

Doesn't matter. In this day and age, there are plenty of places to get better Purdue content anyway (this site being Exhibit A). The Star is always going to cater to their gap-tooth subscriber base. Who cares? They made a decision long ago that they didn't want our business, so I'm happy to oblige.

There is no shortage of Purdue content for the avid fan.

You are correct that there is no shortage of Purdue content. But it should be for all fans and not just the avid Purdue fan. We now have an AD that is productive and the opportunity to grow the fan base in now. So, I am hoping that this AD can lead the department, especially the SID and promotions side, to develop aggressive and exciting outlets to distribute this Purdue content to at least the State of Indiana if not the local region and the entire country. Better radio coverage should include the best stations in the areas of the largest populations in Indiana. In short, I mean Ft. Wayne, Indianapolis, the Region, and the counties around Lawrenceburg. We used to have those stations in our information distribution base, but not now. We lost WOWO when their SD had kids go to IU and he brought in IU sports. He has since passed and there is opportunity to get back with them. We lost WIBC but there are better opportunities now in Indianapolis, by getting the strongest FM station to carry our games, coaches shows and daily Boilermaker information. I don't know much about the Region for this sort of media, but to get a strong radio impact around Cincinnati would put the word out about Purdue. These stations were the 50K watt stations where the world got their information. This thinking is the part that is in the box.

Thinking outside the box gives opportunities with social media to put out the word that Purdue athletics means business and aggressively win over the younger generation(s). This is a way to forget about the Indy Star and do better with our efforts. Indy doesn't have to just be an IU town. Purdue has numbers of fans in Indy and can grow that base with an advertising/promotional campaign addressing that Purdue is a cool place and has many activities and features worth attending.

If you think the IU Star is bad, try reading the ND Tribune. If you're lucky they might list the score of the Purdue game. After they get through 10 pages of ND and all the Michigan teams.

I see where you're coming from, but do people still tune into games on radio? The only time I listen to a sporting event on the radio is if I'm in the car. And about the only time I spend enough time in my car to make it worthwhile is when I'm driving between Ft. Wayne and Purdue on my way to/from a game.

Tonight, for example, when I'm driving home from WL, I'll scan through the XM stations to find something that might interest me. Absent a compelling game, I'm going straight to Hair Nation.

I'm just questioning whether radio and print media like the Star is really worth the investment of any time on Purdue's behalf. I'd suggest it's not because I think people have a lot of options for viewing the game or keeping up with the action via social media and other outlets, but I don't have any statistics to back that up.

I am like you in that I use XM to listen to many things on the radio in the car, i.e. hockey, baseball, basketball etc. But I don't have a TV setup at home to watch this stuff because I am too busy with my life, so the radio works great. Today is a terrible day for IU fans as DD is putting it to them, the coach, the players, the AD, the janitor and everyone else related to IU basketball of the current generation. And the people here are eating it up. That tells me the radio is still relevant and Purdue could do some good with it. I think the AD needs to re-evaluate what is on the radio and how it is presented. We need to be on a station with a far reaching signal. We need to have the post game show on the local radio station just like the competition has. We need to have solid sponsors for those shows and them give them their moneys worth with programing that is worthwhile. We lost our chance with the women's BB program just after the NC. Didn't we lead the B1G in WBB attendance around that time and now they can't even fill the lower bowl. But the games were available on the radio then and the word was out that Purdue WBB was the real deal. So, Purdue could gain dramatically with the proper use of the different medias available, be it social media, radio, TV, video streaming, what ever. And now with programs worth showing the world and the funding commitment from the BOT and the AD, we should be marching up the steps of importance on the ladder to success.

We just finished second in the men's basketball World University Games. We are relevant. Show the team to the world. Let's go. Especially since we have an important dude on our team that is a foreign player. How is Duke going to beat us if we have the best players in the World? Anybody?

The IU Star lost most of the Purdue fanbase long ago. They stopped trying, figuring the IU fanbase would keep them afloat. Not a good strategy for growth in an industry that is already challenged.

I will beg the question why and when? I ask the question because the Indy star was biased against Purdue when I went there in the 70's. And it hasn't changed! What event or reasoning made the Indy star hate Purdue so much? They provide ND better coverage than us

That fan base is really delusional. They have one excuse for the next excuse. Their incoming class has 1 top 100 kid and believe since he recruited these kids that they will be much better. Blame Crean but on paper this years team should be better than next year's team.

Sports editor Bob Collins retired. He was a true pro who gave all Indiana schools their due. Also, the Star sold out to Gannet, which changed everything.
