How Painter stays

I agree and disagree here. If Painter's ultimate plan is for him to play in the post and back up Edey, having a strong base isn't a bad thing, I could see him taking over the role post role next year as well. He's pretty effective at backing down guys n the post. I could see him being a double digit scorer in the post if he started.

Prior to last year, I thought he would be more athletic and be able to play out on the floor more. I just don't see it unless he transforms his body.
Interviews last month with Trey and Painter indicated that Trey will play more four this year and I believe at least alluded to the fact that Caleb is likely to take on more of those backup five minutes (in addition to time at the 4). Agree that it will be interesting to see how Trey looks physically later this summer and into the fall.

I’m hoping Renn and Furst both get more time. Am curious to see if Renn can get enough time to get comfortable at the 4. It’d be great if they’ve been working with Gillis to improve ball handling so he can play some 3 to make room at the 4. He’d definitely need better handle to effectively play any at the 3. I also am optimistic that Heide will get decent minutes at the 3. I think Colvin can play both the 2 & 3.

I hope Trey and Caleb improve to the point where the coaching staff has little choice but to give them both more minutes. I know Zach can handle a lot of minutes but it would be nice if he only had to play 25mpg because the other guys are playing so well, i.e. the drop off is not as severe when he comes out. I tend to doubt that we'll see Mason at the 3 but if he's healthy and continues to improve that also takes pressure off of Zach.

I've posted this elsewhere, but I'm excited to see Caleb get more time in the post. If he can provide some post offensive when Zach is out and hit open threes more consistently it will really open up his game. Coaching staff seems really optimistic about Trey's game, it will be interesting to see how he plays alongside Zach.

Incredibly ignorant paragraph. OP said that mediocre NBA coaches tend not be successful in college. You responded with five examples none of which are remotely relevant. Cal and Rick were both big time college coaches before moving to the NBA. Larry Brown was very successful in both leagues. Davis and Howard walked into elite jobs, and the jury is still out on both.

I see, we have another Simpleton with the legendary Purdue Mentality. Fans like you is why we won’t see another F4 before we lose to another 13+ double digit seed. Can’t hold Matt accountable, nope, can’t do that. I’m sure Baylor, Miami, Nova, auburn, Witchita State, and Wisconsin would disagree. Just a handful of School with similar advantages & disadvantages in basketball as PU, and all have went to Multiple E8s and a F4 in the past decade. Common theme… it was the coach leading these teams not the program. So continue what you do, which is stick head in sand and pretend Matt is the best.

Couldn’t dispute what I said so you resort to personal attacks. Typical. It’s interesting you say I don’t contribute when literally all of your posts are telling other people how stupid and wrong they are. You contribute absolute nothing other than toxicity.
Toxicity with iu fans that live on the Purdue board is fine with me.;
Always look at intent. ;)

What is your objective with that response? I pointed out that your post gave very poor examples of coaches who had been mediocre NBA coaches who went on to NCAA success. I don't think that view is refutable.

You responded with name calling and making a bunch of silly statements that don't reflect anything I've said. I would guess that your objective was to take attention away from the fact that nothing you said in that original paragraph makes sense, but I could be wrong.

Pretty much nailed it! Nicely done.

Someone posted this on Twitter about the Cleveland Guardians organization and I thought it described Purdue and many of our fans so well.

What does this mean?....how do pro sports apply to college?...should we tell the owner of our team to spend extra millions to get a player?....hire better scouts on our farm team?....

Yours didn’t.

TKR is clearly talented as well, but I am hopeful that he can develop more of a perimeter game to complement his post game. It’s hard to say who has more upside between him and Furst, but I would love to see either one of them step up at the 4 to give Purdue the best 4/5 combo in college basketball.
100%

I think TKR realizes his best shot at playing professionally is developing a perimeter game

yes, he knew that before he stepped on campus
The problem is since he stepped on campus he has gotten heavier and slower. Not a good recipe for getting better on the perimeter. Hopefully he has slimmed down some and is getting quicker because of it.

I believe he said in an interview that was a focus for him this off-season.

oh, I've stated such several times. I agree he needs to drop some pounds, but that doesn't change what he wanted to do before stepping on campus...just made it even more difficult. total agreement

I agree that he periodically finds a diamond in the rough, but you can't rely on that to build a program that has long term consistent success in March. If you surround that diamond in the rough with a bunch of players ranked outside the top 100, it's going to be hard to compete with teams built on more talent.
But, the ultimate determining factor of success is that non of those guys led Purdue to a FF or NC. So, the data still supports he's recruiting teams that can get to the S16, but no beyond (except for 2018).
His coaching is what has cost this team a FF & NC, not the players. Wisconsin, Butler & several other teams have made the FF with far less talent.

So is it Xs and Os or is he responsible for the guys choking? Personally, I'm not buying an X and O problem. I see guys playing tight and simply choking.

Painter is a nervous Nelly and I can see that some of that rubs off on certain players. So to some degree that's on Paint. However, none of the baby boilers or Edwards/Cline teams choked. So his nerves can't be that big of a deal.

Maybe we just need guys that step up and play their best in the tournament rather than play like crap on the big stage. Ice water guys, like Edwards and Cline. That's what I want to see. Painter will put them in a good place, but the guys on the court need to play fearlessly!

I think your judgement on those teams having "far less" talent is way off. The Buter teams had Haward and Mack who were drafted higher and played a lot of NBA. Wiscy had Kaminski and Decker who also earned a lot of NBA $$$, I believe our team last year will at most have one(Edey) player who will get a little sniff of NBA play. I think the NBA people know a little more about talent than you do.

I believe Matt did his best job last year winning the BT and BTT tourney, when teams like IU and Mich and MSU had a lot more talent than us.

Every head coach, in the history of sports, gets the accolades and the blame for the success or failure of the players on the court. It's the nature of the beast and what they sign up for.
No coach has ever missed a shot, dropped a pass, fumbled the ball or missed a kick. But, that still comes back to the coach.
But...when the team is collectively tight, afraid to shoot, playing not to lose, etc. that's 100% on the coach.

Okay, so how does a coach make me (the biggest choke golfer that ever lived) not choke? My coach used to try humor, but nothing ever worked.

Sometimes guys just can't get loose and it feeds on each other. You need an alpha dog or two to take over and loosen the team up. That's something I'm hoping Zach can bring this year.

The OP has to be a trolling attempt. It is so wildly misinformed.

Coaches are human and understand the importance for the school, players and coaching staff in big games. A coach needs to hide as much as possible the nervousness when things are not going well. That said, I suspect that if you go back through the data...ignoring freshmen and such that you will find "groups in a team" of players that handle pressure better than "other groups in a different year) that handle pressure not so well. That variable or longitudinal data seeking would be interesting...but how do you parse out first year players without a lot of work

Replace you with someone better who won't.
True, but that means having a crystal ball to know who has ice water in their veins and who has sludge lol... I do think Painter recruits winners. Guys that have won championship might have "it", but they may be pretending too.

So true, but my team was horrible. Terrible golfers except me, but I always choked. If only a coach could fix me.
ha ha. My wife was a pioneer, she actually played on the men's golf team in high school because they didn't have a women's team. (she identified as a woman though, still does). She has a nice swing but life got in the way of her playing as much as she would like.

So, what you're saying, is that you had the yips? Did you choke on putts or just on really important shots? As in "Just hit the damn fairway off the tee and you'll be fine" and you end up hitting a fade into the woods?

The teams body language in the second half of the FDU game was weird. They were definitely in their own heads, playing not to make mistakes (and then making mistakes), afraid to shoot, tentative, etc. It was odd to watch.
