I believe that Evan Battey is visiting this weekend. I really liked what I saw in his mixtape. He looked like a really versatile, though somewhat unconventional, player, who could be a handful with some improvement in his conditioning. The biggest drawbacks that I noticed is that he is short for a 4 and that he is carrying too much weight, currently.

I'm concerned about his lack of reach, quickness, or verticality. If we get him, I hope he surpasses expectations.

You guys would look at Charles Barkley and find fault.

That would be just Turrible.....

Battey may be a little undersized for a 4 at 6'7 (hey, maybe he will grow another inch or two) as well as a little overweight, but I like his physicality in the paint and his ability to step out and take the 3 if needed. His skill set seems to fit in painters motion offense. Once he is more polished and conditioned on the court I could see him being viewed as a respectable big man with a high ceiling in the B1G.

I went to the Olympic trials at IU, and Barkley was a standout, to me at least. He was one of those overweight dudes, who could move and jump real well for his size. And he could throw that weight around too. I remember the "round mound of rebound" going in for a break away dunk.........and not a soul stood in his way LOL. For a 14 year kid who ate, slept, and crapped basketball he was fun to watch. And then to watch Jordan in person...........wow. My buddy and I actually were going up the steps as Dean Smith was coming down, and I told him that Michael Jordan was awesome............he looked at me like I just told him that birds fly......but he was nice and said, "He sure is". I also got my pic taken with John Thompson, and I never met a nicer guy, or bigger guy in person! Good times, when basketball was basketball.

Biggie was measured at 6'7.5" at the combine without shoes. Judging by his photo with Painter, I'd estimate Battey as that same height with shoes, so I don't see his (lack of) height as that big of a deal.

If Battey can use his body like Biggie then there should be no huge drop off if he can develop Biggie's consistency on the board. I wonder what their wingspans are compared to each other... Do you by chance have those numbers?

Not sure comparing him other than physically to Biggie is fair, Biggie was a Mcdonalds All-American and extremely talented. He almost led the conference in rebounding as a Freshman.

I'd be happy if we'd get Battey.
Agreed, everything I've read is that he has a high motor and good offensive skills. Once he loses some baby fat and gets in shape for B10 basketball, he would be an asset.

Wasn't trying to make it sound like Battey would be a rebounding machine his freshman year like biggie, but if he grows as a player he could very well be as good as biggie a couple years down the road... Only speculation by all of us at this point.

and it seems like he wants to be here and isn't playing games about it. Come on down Evan!

My only concern about a kid like this is how bad does he want to improve and be great. Will he want to put in the hard work and eat right to get into great shape? Obviously that's something the coaches have considered leading up to the offer.

Looks like a nice plan B guy.
It appears to me that Battey is part of Plan A. He was offered well before Williams chose Louisville, after Painter saw him in a tournament and was impressed. From what I've seen in videos, he's the kind of power forward that will excel in Painter's system (that often runs through the 4). I want a guy who can do a little of everything and Battey looks like that guy.

I just saw a tweet from Jeff Borzello that he is announcing tomorrow. The timing does sound promising.

Battey is undersized but I would love to land him. He has a lot of mass and so should be able to play against bigger opponents.

Who does he guard? 4s or 5s?

The 5. At least as a freshman. Time will tell but I bet after a year of conditioning he would be an adequate 4.
