Watching the 94' game last night there was a few times were Coach barked at the Purdue on the ball defender for pressuring the ball too far from the hoop. At the end of the half you could see him yell and signal for Porter Roberts to back up. It almost looked like Purdue was playing a Pack Line defense.

Painter of course wants the ball pressured 3/4 of the court and deny's wings and post entry passes.

Was it always this way under Coach Keady? I was 9 during the 94' game and can't remeber how Purdue played defense at the end of Coach Keady's tenure.

Personally I prefer the pack line style as it reduces unnecessary fouls and prevents dribble penetration.

Painter has transitioned to more of a pack line style over the last couple years. Everyone is running more pack line these days which is why a team like south carolina that pressures and gets out in passing lanes can have success. Pressure defense will make a comeback within the next few years. It's like spread offense and power offense in football. When teams start to have success with it everyone else copies.....I saw that Kansas game too and I think they were packing the paint because Jacque Vaughn couldn't shoot and trying to make it tougher catches for Ostertag. I was definitely surprised too to see it cause as far as I remember Purdue always pressured the ball.
