Coach Painter's Presser

Not to distract from the moronic threads bashing our coaches and players, but I caught the last three or four questions of Painter's press conference after the game and found it all very interesting. A few tidbits...

--At halftime the players pointed out that something they'd prepared for--ISU going small and putting Burton at the five--didn't happen in the first half. Painter said, "It's coming. They know they can't guard us, so they're gonna try to flip it on us." (So while Burton did abuse us, it wasn't as though the gambit was unforeseen. He's just a tough player on a tough team.)

--A reporter claimed Isaac had fourteen points in nine minutes. Painter corrected him and said Isaac had scored fourteen in fifteen minutes, which was still, Painter said, extremely good. He went on to talk about the difficulty of choosing Isaac's offense when, defensively, it sometimes poses problems for us. Obviously, it's something he and the staff think about a lot. (My thought: I think Isaac has gotten better, but I'm hoping he can make a big leap in foot speed next year.)

--Alluded to the disappointment of losing in the BTT and pointed out how a couple of the kids who didn't come through in that game learned from it (especially PJ) and came through tonight.

--Went on a semi-rant about the Big Ten being far better than advertised. Complimented Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, and even Nebraska specifically. Talked the most about Wisconsin being far, far better than an eight seed. Basically said it was ridiculous that Villanova had to play Wisky in the second round. Overall, he was way high on the league and sort of chippy with the media for the "theme" that they've created and run with.

There was more, but these were a few things that stood out.

Painter is getting better as a coach. I'm fully convinced. I thought he was too stubborn early on but he has adjusted his style as well as recruiting and demeanor. Maybe not as quickly as a dominant program but we are getting there It may not happen this year but truly great seasons(final 4 or better) are coming.

Thanks, I didn't get to see the presser. Those all sound like pretty insightful comments. I, for one, am very glad Purdue has Painter as a coach.

He's exactly the coach I want. I just wanted us to win more NCAA Tourney games. This weekend helps me move my grade for him from an A- to an A. Now if we can have Tourney success consistently, I'll bump it up to an A+.

Not that he cares about my opinion. :)

I think one thing I hope people acknowledge is the planning/prep that this staff does. The staff had prepped the players to a tee and the players are INCREDIBLY coachable.

One thing that wasn't talked about a lot going into this game was Iowa State's experience. They have a lot of experience and seniors on their team that weren't going to get phased, have been through this, etc. - Purdue literally out-executed them. Purdue survived and advanced, and that's all that matters. But the position that the team put itself in the first half was obviously what won the game.

Matt is the opposite of that guy who got fired down south of Martinsville in delusionton -- Matt is a terrific coach who develops players and has great command of the X's and O's. He is a real basketball mind. No confusion about what is expected from the players standpoints, puts them in the best positions to execute and succeed. He is very real with no hype and some people misinterpret that as lacking "fire" but he is very passionate and dedicated and his knowledge and awareness comes across in his interviews without him self promoting

That's exactly how I feel about him. When I coached, I got to meet him a couple times, and my take was that he was a brilliant basketball mind with a ton of enthusiasm and knowledge. I'm so happy to see the team win tonight!

27 assists is just an insane amount. You get that from guys being put in the proper positions to make the right play(coaching)

The number of set plays that you could tell Purdue ran tonight was impressive. A lot of times you don't necessarily notice it, even if it was.

The back doors at the beginning of the second half were perfect timing. I was surprised we didn't see more of that in the first half as the scouting report said that Iowa State was susceptible to that. But things were going so well in the first half, don't pull out all your cards while your others are doing the trick.

It's easier to show others how to do something when you have, like, actually done it yourself.

Painter did a fantastic job the first 28 minutes... he made adjustments out of half to get us an even bigger lead, they were prepared and ready to play...

but then the last 12 minutes happened. The Swanigan out of the game thing was an absolute blunder, no ands ifs or buts about it.

He kept him out for far too long, with 0 fouls and it was eerily similar to when he kept him out late in the arkansas little rock game..

he got lucky that the players made the plays down the stretch because what he did in those few minutes that let them back in the game was a fireable offense with all that we have been threw with blown leads lately

You lost your point when you compared Caleb last year to this year. They are not the same player or anywhere close and that is a testament to Caleb's work ethic plus the coaching from Matt Painter. It's even more ridiculous to attribute a couple minute span to coaching while giving no credit to the end game result and how the team played the last 3 o 4 minutes to the coach.

I didn't know that, but could have saved a lot of typing had I read this first. I already posted about them going small and how that changed the game for them which led to their run and ability to drive the ball in another thread.

link for those that are interested. Just click ahead to about 7:53 when you see coach and the players come into frame.

I never watch post game interviews but thank you for this. I'm even more confident in Coach Painter after watching it. His responses and analysis are on the spot and he is genuine without being that cheesy camera guy. I was kind of surprised Biggie didn't get more questions. Still absolutely thrilled to get this W and I still believe we are on an upward trend with Coach Painter and I can hardly contain my excitement.

He was asked if Mathias is a good free throw shooter. Painter responded that he shoots 83%. The reporter said that it didn't work out well this time. Painter dryly responded.."well he doesn't shoot 100%". Reporters can be major league idiots.

Swanigan gives very short answers. I watched the press conference after the Vermont game - I'm not sure if any of his answers exceeded 15 words. Vince usually expands on his thoughts a bit more. Given it's the same press covering it, sure they knew they'd get little out of Caleb.

Keep in mind basically anyone gets credentialed for this - so there's all sorts of "bloggers" there. Quite frankly, you can run your own blog and get credentialed for these games if you want.

So given everything that's happened to this point......Who would you like to see at the line next game if it's a similar situation?

All of our players basically are good FT shooters. You don't often get to choose.

Agreed. Although some are more clutch or unflappable than others. I always like to give it to someone who has hit some recent free throws if possible.

We're kind of a FT by committee team. Vince shot the technical free throws against Michigan, but did miss one of them.

We were 10-15 tonight, not good. I think part of it is we aren't getting to the line as much so you aren't getting in rhythm. It'd be nice to get 20 free throws in our next game, but we've played smaller line up teams.

what? He didn't have caleb in at all last year down the stretch and it pissed him off.. I think that is a big reason why he wanted to leave for the draft so badly..

I gave him credit for what he did most of the game because he deserved it, but if you are honestly trying to tell me he did not **** up royally by keeping swanigan out for so long when even Swanigan was begging the assistants on the sideline to talk to painter to get him in, then you are a massive homer and would support him no matter what he did..

he almost cost us this game, fact

Caleb this year vs Caleb last year is not the same argument. That is my point. We lost last year so it's easy to point a finger on Biggie not playing enough. I actually agree with you that I wish he had played more in the end last year. He didn't. We lost. It cannot be changed. I doubt there is a time in a single game we will ever play when Biggie is on our roster that he doesn't want to be in the game . It doesn't mean that every single time he should be. The post game supports Painter's decision and that they knew what was coming. We got some good looks while Biggie was on the bench so I won't say the play calling was poor. Sure I wanted him in but when he did enter the game we became very stagnant and did not play how we did the prior 35 minutes or so.

Wow. Tough question. If my memory is correct, which is unlikely, I would choose Vince as being the most consistent under pressure.
That said, I wouldn't be unhappy with any of the 8 man rotation.

IMO, he did keep him out too long, he took him out before the 12 min. TO break which is fine but then kept him out too long. Then when CS comes in , he got cold and even forced one like in the Mich. game to draw a foul , which didn't get a call. I'm a Painter backer but it was too long of a break.

PJ. I am always comfortable with PJ at the line. After the loss against Michigan, some people here said he should sit at the end of aclose game. I said that he would get them next time, because that's the type of player he is. I was excited when he got to the line.

I loved that moment. You could see all the free throws he'd shot over the past couple of weeks in the Iowa State free throws. The kids has heart and a great work ethic. You don't hit free throws like that by accident. Or without experiencing some adversity first.

Didn't Cline win a National FT contest as a teen?
I like Carsen at the line-kid just has ice water flowing in those veins.

I liked the announcers mentioning PJ using Vince's shorts to wipe off his hands before his second.

I think Cline is a very good free throw shooter, but he's not really a frequent FT shooter (he's 9-11 on the season) and hasn't been in that position late in games. That being said, he's obviously hit very clutch shots before and he was in the game late, so I'm sure he'd be fine.

Also, he has very low attempts, but Spike is 18-19 on the season - he has the highest percentage.
