What is everyone looking for against Creighton?

Answers:

1. Can TKR hit FTs - no, but.. maybe?
2. Any improvement from Colvin, Heide, Loyer - loyer will be great, but nothing from heide or Colvin
3. What does the 5 look like, especially against best 5 in college (I'd take Kalk over Dickinson 100/100). - no show
4. How ready are Freshmen - they will be ready

I think DJ will take some time to adjust on the defensive side…he found out he can’t rely on just his height anymore. Very good experience going against the best big in the country. He needs to use his feet , body and weight to guard and rebound. Hope he can adjust as the season goes. Berg looked slow to process things, maybe he needs some games to get up to game speed. We will see.

TKR…dude can score on anyone in the country. Hope he can box out well and grab rebounds for us.

I am hoping the non existence of Heide and Colvin were by design. Colvin look much improved in defense, but Heide…where was he at?!

Loyer had a quiet 17, was a non liability/great on defense and automatic from 3 if left open.

Smith—ohhhh my did he look great.

Cox and Harris (he got an awful whistle tonight) are going to be menaces in the b2g for years to come. They look great.

Yeah I was just answering those questions based on the one exhibition.

Braden will definitely be an all American.

I think we will figure it out, Creighton is likely better than anyone else in the big ten. And we were on the road. And we did lose to Arkansas last year in the exhibition, and they were terrible last year.

Overall, I think a very positive showing. Defense is a little scary, but Creighton is legit, and we are relying a lot of freshman here, and Creighton was out of their mind from 3.

Heide was not good tonight. One game though. Colvin was only slightly better.

Smith was cooking. Creighton knew it and couldn't stop him....which mad it that much more impressive.

This game pretty much confirmed (for me anyway) that we'll be a completely different type of team and that isn't a bad thing.

I'm glad we do these types of games... and frankly, not at home either.... they don't mean anything in the W/L column ... come with ZERO scouting info and are a fantastic challenge to see where you are.

Yeah.. but man, if you watched, it's hard to come away more optimistic than going in.

That being said, one thing I haven't seen discussed is that Creighton had already played a high level game this year against Iowa State (where Creighton lost by 1). Pretty big advantage given all of our guys are being asked to play different roles this year/are new to college basketball. It looked like we were visibly trying to figure out our identity on the fly. Probably would have been better to scrimmage a bad team first just to get a handle on roles before playing a top 15 team that had already had a warm up game.

Nah, I like that painter challenges his teams. What do you learn from beating a cupcake team? You don’t learn about your team much. If we go .500 into conference plays x it’ll be weird, but if it means we get better and gel by March to make a run at a 3 Pete and to the second weekend, then I’m all for it. Not trying to go the IU route of playing cupcakes and having to blow them out to game the system.

And as a player/competitor, you want to play the best. It always takes some time adjusting with new guys.

Didn't realize this. That is a big advantage.

Will Wole deny this happened as well?

I agree. This game meant nothing as far as NCAA bid goes. I think it served the exact purpose Painter wanted it to serve. It personally challenged his players, gave him an opportunity to assess strengths and weaknesses, and gave the players a sense of what the season will look like in a game that did not matter.

Really? What did you see that made you more optimistic than going in?

I was shocked at our defense and am very nervous about the 5. Everywhere else was about as expected.
I was surprised at how much the freshmen looked like freshmen. Not sure why other than we haven't had to rely on 1 for quite awhile. The guards looked good on the D end and are going to help there. Otherwise, kinda scary, 5 spot most so. I've revised my expectations downward, though the ceiling remains high if it all comes together and 1 of the centers comes through.

We will take our lumps early but I still think this team will be good come February. Lots of new faces that need to get some experience.

It's too early to worry. 4 fresmen got a lot of minutes against a top 10 team. I'm just as optimistic as I was before the exhibition game. Think about what happened in last year's exhibition game. It doesn't mean anything.

We've got 5 guys who can play the 5. I don't think it's right to suggest that it will be a long season if one of them doesn't step up.

You don't think Jacobsen will be serviceable? You don't think Furst, TKR or Burgess can play the 5?
I continue to have concerns about all of them at that position. Time will tell.

I am so optimistic about the 1-3 and those 5 guards. So many tools there. I am optimistic about our shooters from both 2 and 3 will put a lot of pressure on the defense.

I am optimistic about Smith competing hard for the B10 POTY. Not a stretch to think he can do it as phe is just that good.

I am optimistic about added defensive tools at the 1-3. I cant wait to see Harris man up against Sears and other great guards. CJ no slouch either on D. Be fun watch to see what they can do. Loyer looks to be a better defender this year and is crafty on drawing fouls.

I am also optimistic about TKR. I don't think it is a reach that he makes one of the all B10 teams. Perhaps 2nd team? After first two games looking better than that.

I am also optimistic about CMP figuring out what works best for the team at the 4/5 as one of the best coaches in the nation.

I am optimistic about our big man coaching. They have shown themselves to be great at development of bigs this last decade. No reason to think that cannot continue that, just because it looks shaky early
