Butler Talk

The most probable way we lose is foul trouble, resulting in free throws for Butler. If they get in the lane with their guards, get our bigs into foul trouble early, and hit their free throws, it could cause Purdue to play out of character, thus, having to find ways to win that we're not accustom to.

I don't believe that'll be the case, as I think this Purdue team is too focused on the execution part of the game, and too unselfish.

Am I the only one that cringes when Purdue fans go out of their way to write on other fan boards about how good our team is. I know most of our fans write with respect but I still find it discomforting.
That's always my first impression too, but we always have respectful fans from opposing teams come and share information that we wouldn't get otherwise. Makes it more interesting and it gives us an idea which fanbases are civil. I trust that our fans do the same.

If they successfully deny most passes to our centers and we are cold from outside... And if they are able to hit shots from outside plus penetrate successfully, then we could lose. Lot of ifs, and it could happen, but I don't think so. Ray and AJ have to be itching to get their first win against Butler. I predict Boilers by 9, and Butler has their lowest point total of the season so far.

"Catching lightning in a bottle twice in two years is more times than Purdue has caught lightning in a bottle ever."

Doesn't "catch lightning in a bottle" imply that the accomplishment in question is based more on luck than skill?

So the guy's saying "Butler's been lucky twice compared to Purdue's been lucky never." Ummmm... ok.

I'm sure you picked some of their more ridiculous comments, but I appreciated the biased synopsis. I don't have time to visit other message boards.

Certainly picked what seemed to me to be the biased comments.

Okay, I'll bite...

First, I want to preface by saying I come in peace. I have a lot of respect for Purdue's program and their style of play. I think the game Saturday is going to be a hell of one and the Dawgs will have to play their best of the season (or at least as good as they did at Cincy) to be able to come out with a win.

The lightning in a bottle reference was a part of a quote I made on the Butler board. But it's taken a little out of context. My post started with, "I took a gander at the Purdue rivals forum to see what the Boiler fans were saying about the game. For the most part, the Purdue fans are 1,000x more civil and realistic than IU fans"

Then I picked out a few of the more absurd comments from this board, and had a rebuttal for each. Such as "Butler sux."

One post from this board that I responded to said, "Nobody would have ever heard of them if they never caught lightning in a bottle, two years in a row....."

In my mind, since 2000 the Dawgs, Purdue, IU, and Notre Dame have all been pretty even as programs. As a Dawg alumn, it's always funny when people think the two finals runs under Stevens are all Butler has accomplished when in the past 15 years there's been 10 NCAA appearances, 18 NCAA wins, 4 Sweet 16, and 2 Final Four appearances.

So I was basically disagreeing with that statement, by saying it's been more than those two seasons so it's not lightning in a bottle, but if you want to marginalize it like that then..

Anyway, best of luck on Saturday. It will be fun to watch the varsity teams play on Saturday after the JV game!

What you found was our two or three IU Fan wannabes. For the most part the members of this board are realistic maybe almost snakebitten posters considering the high we were on when one knee destroyed the seasons of many just a few years ago followed by a couple of bad years of recruits. The couple that you found are generally disregarded over here and will disappear if ignored. Good luck and good game on Saturday.

Thanks for coming over and clarifying. As previously noted, most comments you took issue with were from obvious trolls. Overall you'll find this board is respectful of Butler but still optimistic.

I have degrees from both schools and root hard for both. However when they play head to head I've always rooted for the team I thought had a better chance for a post season run. Needless to say in recent years I've pulled for Butler. But this year I'm rooting for the Boilers and expect a great game.

I'm just going to point out that not everyone posting on the Purdue message board is a Purdue fan. The above comment was rebutted by others here, but ignored by most because it came from a silly troll. She made the same cerebral comment about Vanderbilt. So if you only found one other post that may have come from a Purdue fan, and you felt it was unreasonable, then I would say that the respect for the Bulldog's program here is pretty healthy. In fact, it always has been.

(edit: I don't even remember seeing that 2nd comment, so I must have ignored it like most other people here did.)

No I agree, other than those few outlier comments, I've really enjoyed reading this board in preparation of the game. I understand that all fanbases have their trolls, and that they don't reflect the thoughts of the fanbase as a whole.

As I stated before, you guys have a very civil and respectful fanbase. It makes reading your guys thoughts on the game pretty enjoyable.

I'll add to this a bit and answer a few posts concerning going to another site like Butler and posting in another thread. First, I posted with IU people before Mike Peegram sold out to Rivals to discuss basketball. I can guarantee that "fans" from all schools may act differently than some wish. We are human and that happens. It doesn't bother me if Purdue people cringe when Purdue fans go to different sites and post about Purdue. I just hope that concern is not about basketball knowledge. I have and will continue to do go to other sites, but it is with respect to an ongoing topic or one about to be discussed. I'm not politically correct and expect to have a few morons not representative of the grads of that school on the whole get their panties in a wad. However, I only concern myself if someone thinks I'm an embarrassment relative to actual baskettball knowledge. if I make a mistake there...then I really need to know because I typically do not fear that scenario.

That said I posted a lot on Butler about the Purdue game with a real desire to learn more. I had two maybe three people comment not on what was said, but how...AND the length because my Butler family (Purdue fans as well) doesn't have a lot of difficulty with an attention span or struggling with such depth reading. I'll also say that behind the scenes I had a LOT more private messages telling me they appreciated my insight and general knowledge not only of Purdue but of basketball in general. One knew my family and I was able to provide some contact for him.

Now, on to the above. I was a Butler fan before a Purdue fan. My brother-in-law is considered one of the best to ever play for Butler and his pic lies between Bobby Plump and Gordon Heyward. Butler basically got him over Purdue due to an older brother already at Butler. Butler was VERY good many years ago and hit hard times in the 70's and 80's..and perhaps early 90's somewhat. A new president was hired (brother-in-law quit cummins and now worked in admissions for Butler) and asked BinL what happened to Butler Basketball and BinL basically said the previous president did not want butler to be seen as a jock school...which it wasn't and that he (pres) was going to improve the sports at Butler and we have seen the result. Years ago Butler played every Big Ten school except IU for some time. I'm thinking IU like Digger couldn't find a road to Hinkle. Butler also played UCLA and Notre Dame and so they were not afraid to play with the big boys. So, Butler had a LONG dry spot, but they were good before and are good again and being in the Big East will only help them with quality players.

That said, I think Purdue is better than Butler over the long haul, but Butler is good and will continue to be good. When I think of Hinkle and all he did and the historical perspective he must have had with Wooden and Piggy to name a few...I hold respect for Butler Basketball. I want to beat them and them beat everyone else.... :)

I root for Butler over every other team besides Purdue. But it's been annoying because it seems like it's been a long time since Purdue's beaten Butler. So while I'll echo other fans' sentiments that I believe Purdue will win, I don't think anyone is over the top optimistic.

I'd say for the most part, fans go to other boards to either stir stuff up, or to bring back some insulting comments to share with their own board. If you go to legitimately discuss basketball, I'd assume you're in the minority.

I'd say you are probably right a lot of the time. Many years ago I might have done that...stir it up. I'm pretty old and probably saw my first Butler game 55 years ago. If anything gets stirred up on my account it is probably due to some children that need "safe places" ...candy a$$es. That said I just had a new one on the Butler site. My ego is not inflated by kids running up and down the basketball court with a ball in their hands, but do like the game ...and this team in particular. I'm too old to get excited ;)

We are a matchup nightmare for Butler. Get Wideman into foul trouble and absolutely lock down on Dunham and Boilers should roll. As others have stated, Jones is the real wildcard. He is such an oddball player. As my Butler friends say, he is that player you love and hate every single game. I guess it's like watching Yancey catch footballs.

I've personally witnessed the love/hate thing in seconds, but it always comes back to WHY???
