Butler Talk

Too lazy to make another account, but wanted to discuss this. Someone's key for winning:

Defense: Actually play defense
- don't play zone

Surely we have struggled slightly more against zone than man this year, right? I mean when Pitt tried to play man on us we ate them alive.

I would say that we thrive against man to man defense. Zone can hurt us unless we are hitting our threes.

Purdue is absolutely the best team to be playing in the feildhouse Saturday.

I would imagine that they are focused and ready to play well going into conference season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them hold Butler to under 70.

Expect to see them make a statement with this game.

I'm not sure whether their fans are taking us lightly or just talking themselves into what they want to believe. From reading near the end of that thread it sounds like some of their fans expect to see us put a bunch of 5'10 fat kids out there around our big men with the way they expect to just utterly dominate the guard/wing matchups to overcome the advantage we have in the frontcourt that they have managed to discount greatly.

"Everybody is concerned about how we will guard them but Painter has some serious decisions to make himself. He's got three BIGS that IMO will have a tough time checking Chrabascz."

The guy averages 12 and 4.

"Raphael Davis should be back. Who does Painter put him on? Dunham? Martin? Jones? Pick your poison."

I hope we can just find someone on their team that the BTDPOY is capable of guarding.

"Jones can take Mathias/Stephens/Cline IMO."

Well if he can then I guess none of them have to play. None of them start anyway.

"We will win this game on Saturday because of better guard play and this team has a chance to go far because of it."

We will see. Our opponents seem to be taking the mantra that our bigs are impressive yet they will beat us because our guards suck. I think our guards will be competitive with most every team on our schedule. Just because our guards know how to feed the post and actually look to do so on most possessions doesn't mean they aren't capable.

"These Purdue BIGS are problematic, but Butler has gained alot of experience playing good BIGS. I thought the BIGS last season in the BIG East were good."

Yep. Nothing you haven't seen before. Move along. Nothing special to see here.

"I wouldn't be to terrified of the opposite coach this time either. Has proven to do less with more throughout his career there. Two sweet 16 appearances with final four caliber teams and nothing much else to show for. I wouldn't consider that anything too great personally."

3 time Big Ten Coach of the Year in one of the best-coached conferences in college basketball. Has had FF caliber teams at Purdue but has not taken one to the NCAA tournament due to injuries and been eliminated from the tournament by Final Four and NCAA championship teams more often than not.

"Purdue is 0-4 in Crossroads Classic."

Truth. We were terrible in two of those years and playing our worst basketball of the year at that time last year. I think we might look a bit different this year.

"When they are BIG & we are small we run their butt's off & see if they can adapt."

Brilliant! Because we play both our 7 footer together often and none of our bigs can run the court at all. Also it's easy to just run without a willing partner. All you have to do is defend well and rebound which have been real strengths for Butler so far this season.

"Butler dropped 50 points in one half against an elite defense in Cincinnati IN THEIR HOUSE."

And still beat them by 2 on a shot at the end of the game to win 78-76 which, if my math is correct, means they must have scored only 28 points against them in the other half.

"No reason to think they can't do it again in front of a crowd that is 75%+ pro-Butler."

Most IU and ND fans will have left by the end of halftime of our game. I also don't really think most of the Notre Dame basketball fans there will care one way or another about our game unless they are reversible jacket variety of fans.

"Who on Purdue guards Martin when he comes in at the 4?"

Nobody. That will render us completely helpless.

"Purdue is nowhere near as fast as Butler. Butler's pace will be as tough for them, as their height is for us."

Typically teams that defend well and rebound dictate the pace of the game. Two real strengths of this Butler team so far.

"And according to some, Xavier is a legit frontrunner for the Final 4 and they only scored 65 at home against UC."

And Xavier also beat them by double digits in one of the best rivalries in the country. There's more to basketball than points scored.

"Definitely a winnable game."

Yep. Walk in the park for Butler.

"Catching lightning in a bottle twice in two years is more times than Purdue has caught lightning in a bottle ever."

I could've sworn we've been to the Final Four. Guess not.

Overall, I think that thread is fairly balanced. There are also several posts from guys who think that Butler has little chance to win. It always seems to be black and white with folks. There were more negative posts than positive ones beofre the Cincinnati game.

This game is a great test for Butler. They need this before conference play. They have to play much better defese than they have or they'll get beat.

Purdue is absolutely the best team over a series, but in one game anything can happen. Have all the teams play in a truly neutral site 10 games and I think Purdue is the hands down favorite, but that is not the scenario and I will be happy with a win ...that I expect to take place...and also agree that Purdue will have som intensity knowing how they fared in the past at the crossroads and the beating the second half they took last year...which will be a reminder at halftime Saturday

I think Butler will try to pack it in and make us beat them from the perimeter. Other teams have already tried this and it hasn't seemed to work. We are playing alot better against zones this year. Swanigan has been the key, since he can pass so well from the high post. I think it will be a great game, but we should wear them down in the last 10 min. like we have everyone else & pull away. Butler has always been a thorn in our side, so this would be a nice win.

Talk about cupcake city! They haven't beaten anyone.

Boilers win another by double digits.
I think you are either a troll trying to make the Purdue fan base look like jerks, or your are just stupid. Which is it? What is your deal? You post nasty crap about every opponent before the game, and then just disappear. Never any real basketball talk. Just crap.

Me thinks you are a troll and nothing more.

I expect a zone, and don't know Butler enough to know if they will press or trap. Purdue hasn't seen that for a while and it could cause problems. that said...with Purdue's length it is easier to go over the top and Purdue is cerebral with a few ball handlers. AGainst EVERY team this year...if Purdue shoots well...they can and most likely will beat anyone...assuming the calls are somewhat consistent inside and out...

for the most part they have all been civil to me as I only want to talk basketball...
Purdue and Painter have been embarrassed in this event for four years with a real a$$ whipping last year.
Matt will have them ready to play. As will RD. Only thing that bothers me is we always play terrible after finals. Part of the reason we are o-fer in this event.

Finals have usually been a problem as you state...AND YES Purdue will have some intensity...but you still have to make baskets. I would like to see the team have some kind of block where they take their finals early in the week if possible rather than whatever as they have enough time constraints. Yes, Purdue rarely plays well during this time. This is Rapheal and AJ's last shot and the team sends them out a winner...

wow. congrats Tjreese for having 2/3 of the posts in that 8 page thread.

I have no problem talking basketball, but do wish there were a bit more strategy talk. Part of the problem is there is not really a way I can see to follow the thread like a tree directory...it just ends up being on the last page. Consequently, it is hard to know if someone has seen a previous comment. FWIW...cut my teeth on Butler Basketball in the early 60's. Brother-in-laws pic still in Hinkle beside Bobby Plump and Hayward and have some family that went to Butler. Still, there isn't quite the give and take as we are used to seeing in Rivals....

I agree with the prediction that butler will have the greater fan support. With Butler's recent tournament success, IU fans have adopted them as the second school they've never attended but still claim.

Purdue by double digits 81-71. You can only zone if you have length and speed (e.g. Syracuse). Unless we just have one of "those" games where we turn it over a lot and can't hit any 3's, I think we will control the game and pull away in the end. Too many options. Too much size. Too much defense. IMO getting Jones out of rhythm is the key. Run their shooters off the line and DO NOT FOUL. They make a killing at the free throw line. This is gonna be a good one. I'm pumped! Boiler Up!

Have seen that horror flick, the sequel, and the prequel in previous years, especially at this event.....I'm hopeful it's run its course, but those are definitely two of the keys for this game. I'd like to see the same intensity as with the beginning and end of the game with Pitt.

Jones amazes me...can't hit a FT until the game is on the line and he all of a sudden hits them. i also don't understand why he doesn't have most his shots caught in mid air with his scoops. I'm not sure "he" is the key, but he has a lot to do with Butler's success. If Butler cannot run and cannot get good looks on the perimeter they will be hard pressed to be a problem inside with as many bodies as Purdue can place in there. I'm worried about somehow Purdue turning it over and too tight of a game on "drives" and too loose of a game inside. If it is decently called game in and out...Purdue will be fine...AND this will be a nice win...

Butler rarely presses. They're a man-to-man team that plays zone occasionally. It'll be interesting to see how they try to handle Purdue's size.

I took an objective (as much as possible) look at the rosters and results for each team. The only way Butler wins this game is if they shoot +42% from three and out hustle us for loose balls and such the whole game. Our size will eat them alive. Biggie should have at least 12 rebs. along with H&H going for a combine 35 and 15. But the 3 pointer is the great equalizer. Hope Davis is fully recovered and the whole team brings a bulldog mentality to guard the 3 point line.

Is this different for other teams? Butler is in finals this week too and does not play this week.

I have always had much respect for Butler. They play hard as a team and just find ways to win. I expect this to be a really good game. I expect Painter will get his guys ready to play.

Thanks. I didn't think they pressed, but haven't had a chance to really watch them yet

I don't know whether it is or isn't. I do think Purdue has typically not played as well around finals time. I don't know if that is an issue for other schools or not. i don'tr recall many saying it was at other schools. I don't even think finals are the same within a school for different majors and so it is very possible that a difference could exist...and if it does I'm not sure all teams in a certain year react the same. I'm sure you have seen many references over the years and actually watched Purdue not play well during this time. Are you saying other teams play poorer around finals as well or Purdue doesn't really play poorer and it is just our imagination?

Maybe other schools play worse then too?

Regardless of who Purdue plays this year, the fans are going to say the exact same thing:
1) Try to run to tire out the bigs
2) Try to isolate a big on the perimeter with a smaller, quicker player
3) Play zone and make PU take a lot of 3's hoping they are cold that day

Ummm....don't these fans know that Painter knows this? Heck, Painter knows how to beat his own team better than any opposing fan/coach, so you can guarantee that's exactly what CP is working and is ready to adjust to.

I'm looking forward to BU playing a zone and watching Biggie run the high/low from the free throw line.

If Purdue executes, doesn't settle for the first open 3 they see, this will be another 10-12 point win.

I don't think that Butler will play a ton of zone unless foul trouble dictates they do. Butler is the kind of team that will switch to zone for a couple of possessions to disrupt the opponents offense but I wouldn't expect to see it for most of the game.

I'm not too worried about finals with this group. They seem to be focused on a bigger prize than teams in the past and they are a very intelligent team. As far as running the bigs off their legs it seems on most runouts the bigs are among the first two guys to get to the other end and when you have multiple quality bigs when one gets tired you just reload. I'm expecting it to be close until about 6:00 to go in the game and then the fatigue factor to take over and the Boilers to pull away to a comfortable win.

I think you are on-target here. One of Painter's strategies is to tire the opponent. Keep the intensity up for the whole game, keep runniing new players in that are fresh, and by the end of the game, the other team starts to get tired legs. Shots stop falling, and they make mistakes. PJ's steels have come at the end of the game when the other team starts cracking. I am sure Butler is wel conditioned, but so have the other teams we faced. It is a good strategy when you are as deep as we are.

Be Quick! Don't Hurry!

Am I the only one that cringes when Purdue fans go out of their way to write on other fan boards about how good our team is. I know most of our fans write with respect but I still find it discomforting.

I enjoy reading/talking to other teams, particularly OOC teams that I don't know as well as B1G teams, before games. It makes the game a little more enjoyable for me because I now have a more vested interest in the other team and understand them a bit more, what to watch for from the, etc. Just one person's opinion... to each their own, as long as they aren't being a d*ck on the other teams board I am cool with it.
