Convince me that he should redshirt.

He was by far the best 5 we had on defense even in the short amount of time he played.
He got switched on to a couple of guards who tried to drive on him and he stopped them both. He has been showing out in practices and the scrimmage.
He is already looking like he could bypass Furst and Berg on the depth chart.
With the other bigs fouling as much as they did in the exhibition we could need him even as a backup.
He can play both the five and the four, has the quickensss and he has a sweet looking 3 point stroke.

I am just finding a hard time believing that he should sit out a year when he in a short amount of time has shown as much or not more than the others at his positions. Pair him with TKR and we don’t give up a size advantage but still have shooters at all five positions.

I can’t and I think he shouldn’t but can you convince painter to not RS him?

100% agree!

I agree. Play Burgess and Jacobson, and let them grow. Take some lumps early, but both will be ready in March. Next year they could be an absolutely deadly frontline with TKR.

I still am holding out hope for Furst, but Saturday looked like last year unfortunately.

I don't see it with Berg.

One problem is, in tight games Painter plays a short bench. Many of us are looking ahead to 2025-26, but Painter's job is to play for an NCAA bid and run this year. Looking at the schedule, this looks like a season of tight games, so some players will not be developing through game time.

you're not wrong. In one of Matts last interviews he talked about ALL the centers needing 30 minutes a game to become what they can. If he still believes that in a couple of weeks he'll be deciding to roll with whichever guys and giving them the minutes that they need to develop. After ONE GAME, not sure I'd disagree that TKR and Raleigh (sp) might be the more developed and/or quicker duo.
Burg didn't look that bad. A foul or two was ticky tack and he played like the new guy going against a really good defender. I thought he was less lost on D than Jacobson and he's significantly bigger/stronger than DJ at this point.

He was the best defensively without a doubt, and that came from painter. I also thought he was the best at blocking out and brought a lot of energy. This is what we all saw in thr scrimmage too.

DJ was so lost out there. If I put blame (at least 50% of it at least) in busted coverage scoring by creighton I would assign 6 pts to berg, 14 to DJ, 4 to Furst, and 0 to burgess. I might have missed some plays or felt like someone else deserved more fault on some.
DJs defensive blockouts were ugly. Unfortunately he’s got a long way to go.

Also hard to quantify is a gold old fashioned screen. You don’t get an assist but it’s just as effective. Berg had a couple. He also had some that could have been called for moving screens.

Painter said it has to make sense for both sides. If he does ultimately redshirt I will recognize it was also Burgess decision, just like with TKR.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it ultimately the players decision? Its not like Painter is doing it unilaterally.

How many times was burgess matched up on Kalk? Did he have very many opportunities to go against him, if at all?

Good question I don’t know if for sure they did at all. He was not marched up with kalk in any of the creighton highlights but still looked good including doing a great job defending a guard on a switch.
For sure. I just wonder what we’d think if he had to guard Kalk like Berg and DJ did. Would have been great to have seen how he matches up and what he may have needed to work on.

This is not to say im not a burgess fan because I have been since he committed. Just tough to compare performances when he didn’t seem to have matched up vs the best big in the country like the other 2.

Agree I think the frustration towards berg has been a bit unfair. That was a tall task and I thought he did Ok. Paint seems to have confidence in him, he certainly wouldn’t start him. Heck 3 of his starters this year started as true freshmen if paint thought burgess or DJ was better he would start them.

Yeah for sure. I think we need to give him almost through the end of 2024 to see how he does/adjusts before really yelling for him to be out 😂

I’m not saying give him more time. Paint and his staff know what we have in berg already. And they believe based on full body of work and their experience he is part of their best 5 lineup. The team plays best when he is on the floor. It does not even mean he is the best player at the 5 position. It might be as simple as on offense he allows TKR and Braden the best opportunity to score with screens, blocking out, bing in right position to allow those guys to create their shots. And on defense he’s in best position where he can be one-on-one with his defender and the others have confidence they can do their job and not have to sag off their guy or uncertainty on when to switch or run through screens if they are all in sync. Part of it will get better with time as the freshmen learn the system and are more aligned with their teammates. Some of it is basketball IQ. But at the 5 spot a lot of it is strength especially in the big ten. Skill and energy are factors that DJ and Burgess have on Berg respectively for sure but if you have a leg up on someone and don’t make the four guys around you reach their potential it is one step forward, four steps backward.

I think Burg did get one foul on a moving screen, but as noted, at least he was trying to get it done.

He's also shown a pretty nice jumper in practice and filmed workouts, we haven't seen any of that yet. Will make a big difference if he can shoot a free throw range shot and be effective.

In today’s world it makes no sense to redshirt any player. While he may not receive many minutes as a freshman, the reality is if he doesn’t make any type of impact his second year, he will most likely transfer. And you are basically giving his next school a year of eligibility to use.

And if the player remains and is not making an impact by his 4th year is he really worth keeping for his 5th year using up a scholarship that could be given to someone else?

Is a player who only plays 1-3 minutes a game in his 4th year really worth having him red shirt that first year?

If a player that red shirted his freshman year and stayed 4 years and earned his degree and is a role player his senior season even going to want to stay for a 5th year?

With 15 scholarships a team can use someone that is a team player, pushes guys in practice and get their degree.

Not even remotely accurate.... as usual.
As usual it’s you who disagrees with me! I’ll double down on my opinion.

In today’s college world, if a player doesn’t get the minutes he believes he deserves, he will transfer. Look at Harms and Eastern. Look at Catchings! Look at Jones. Why did Jones and his buddy leave SIU? Look at the two Receivers who transferred away from Georgia.

My statement is true for 90% of today’s college athletes! It’s very simple. If he doesn’t get the minutes he believes he deserves, He will transfer.

Berg, Jacobson and Burgess are all fighting for the same spot. One of them will win the spot. Two of them will lose. Painter will recruit and sign another big man next year. And somebody will transfer.

Maybe Burgess will win the starting role. Maybe Jacobson will . Maybe it will be Berg. It should be obvious that Jacobson and Burgess didn’t come to Purdue to be a role player for 4 years.

Whoever loses will leave! This isn’t 1990! Loyalty to a school no longer exists!

Maaan. Cmon. Your “statement” is not 90% true for all athletes.

Jones left for a better team after 4 years and more opportunity and probably $$, just like Domask. Catchings left because he wanted guaranteed time that we continue to tell you is not guaranteed ever by painter.

I know you think all coaches are the same, you still think painter just uses “coach speak”…why you say that, I’m not sure as he’s never shown that. With that said, he recruits a certain type of player and probably talked to certain ones about redshirting. Burgess broke his foot JR year and may need a little more to develop. Or it may have been a plan all along. You need to stop generalizing every play as the same.

What player from Purdue has left after one year? Painter is fair with every one of them and they know what it takes to play more.

Haarms left cuz edey was coming in and he thought he could get more exposure out west (he was wrong). Nojel left for whatever those reasons were and that turned out to be horrible for his career…and same for Haarms.

Loyalty to a school no longer exists!
Caleb Furst alone already proves you wrong. He's loyal, so was Gillis, Morton, Zach... I could go on, but this is enough to make you look like the fool you are.

Oh and to add salt to your empty head, Waddell is still here even though he likely won't see many minutes.. if at all..

Now run along back to your sock puppets.

Yes. We know how you feel about redshirting. Painter feels differently.

The end.

I do agree somewhat, but I also think if a player is coming off injury, or not physically ready for the college level, it could benefit them to just sit a year and develop.

Name the last player who was redshirted and opted to play his fifth year somewhere else and would have been an asset to our team? Maybe Aaron wheeler. Haarms doesn’t Count because it was not a voluntary redshirt but basically an NCAA sanction.

Redshirt makes way more sense as they will get another year (if Purdue chooses to keep them!) to make $200k+ at Purdue. It gives them a choice if they want to come back and make that money.
