Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

Okay, let’s say it’s $4mil. Now how much of that do you think the big 3 are gobbling up? I would say >50%.
Why do you think that the total is a fixed amount? I agree that it's not unlimited but as stated previously, Matt and the athletic department have enough connections with deep pockets that if they said 'we think we can add x,y,z for an incremental $2M and it will really help our FF chances', I'd be shocked if they couldn't raise additional funds.

3. Painter sees a player that is a helpful addition to a team just this close to making a run, like last season.
4. Painter wants a depth piece. Like say next season when we will only have three bigs.
5. A unique player emerges that's near NBA or NBA talent that would instantly elevate the team and he thinks he would also be a cultural and team fit.
Yep. Painter went looking for a seasoned guard after 2 veterans, Newman and Jenkins, left.

lol He did not go looking for Jones to fill the shoes of two players who didn't contribute a ton at the end. He went looking for Jones because he saw that he needed another player who could hit some shots and initiate some offense while playing great defense. Something neither of those guys did, and something that he knew he didn't have enough of on a team that needed that to make a run at a F4. If he had one more spot and BOTH of those guys were still here he'd have still gone after Jones.

Perhaps they can but for this year, there is a set amount as it’s already been paid out. The problem is, as you add more players, the players who are already here are gonna want more money. How are you going to give a new guy a million is Loyer is only making $800,000 without making waves?

We know retention is Painters strategy so I really don’t see him dropping a bag to a new player or players without taking care of current guys first.

Jones relegated Morton to the bench so I agree that he was offered to upgrade a position that he felt wasn’t improving.

He also went looking for a seasoned guard after the 2021-2022 season because he knew that Hunter and IT wouldn't cut it and was hesitant to turn the backcourt over to two freshmen, Newman and Morton.

Of course, it's set for this year, that's not the argument. I don't think MP is going to throw around big money to bring in new players but if he did, I agree that you'd have to account for the need to 'top off' your existing core. I'm not saying what moves Matt can or should make, I'm just saying that it's unlikely to me that Matt wants to make a move next year and can't do it because he doesn't have the funds.

Even if Morton had been "improving," Jones was a better player than him, and offered something no one else on the team had like him, athleticism.

It's about the team. Folks are too focused on individual players. If a big man comes in that Painter thinks is the next Edey, do you think he will say, no, I'm not going to take him because all my players are improving?

Hmm. No where did I say that Painter went "looking for Jones to fill the shoes of two players who didn't contribute a ton at the end." Multiple seasons he went looking for guards to fill gaps due to graduation and transfers. It is repeated history and well documented. Maybe you were too young and weren't watching Purdue during those seasons?

Lol so much wasted energy you put into personal shots I just laugh at. Keep doing you but it's really a waste of time.

That's a great question. It depends on a number of things.
How motivated are they by money? (Yes, I realize that everyone is motivated by money, but you get my point).
Do they believe (and does it matter to them) that they can win a NC at Purdue?
What other teams are talking to them?
If Painter thinks he needs a couple of pieces for a NC run, can he convince them to consider that as part of the package in addition to the NIL $?

It's just a very gray area, but I wouldn't assume that the highest bidder is going to win all the portal battles.

Morton is a great example of someone being replaced by the portal. By all accounts, Morton was a guy Painter loved, was loyal, worked hard, good teammate, etc, etc. But, he wasn't productive on the floor and was someone Painter saw an opportunity to upgrade.
I'm sure Morton wasn't happy about it.

I think that as this discussion proceeds I am starting to agree with posts on both sides of the argument. I think we’d all agree that there is a lot of nuance to this argument and it is all about how Painter applies his philosophy to specific situations. Nobody is saying that the portal is off limits and nobody is saying that Painter should take the approach that Woodson took this past offseason.

Personal shots? Where? You posted as if Jones was the 1st transfer Painter has taken. I assume you don't know that he has a long history o accepting transfers, JUCOs, and now portal players to fill his perceived needs . I don't know you, but you simply came across as a new fan unaware of the history.

LMAO. Dude we've had interactions going back years on here. And nothing I posted remotely suggested Jones was the first transfer he has taken considering in the very same posts I literally said he'd done it two years in a row and literally named Jenkins.

Do you read every other word or what?

Listen man, I'm gonna let you have the last word and then I'm going to look at interaction with you as unnecessary and probably uninteresting to the rest of the board and stop responding to you. Feel free to do the same, or not, doesn't really matter.

Sure it's a good roster. That doesn't make it a final four roster. I agree we should add more. A day like today when the opponent provides almost no resistance shows this team has a very high skill level, no doubt.

Other games have showed we struggle when other teams have athletic guards that get into you.

The truth is in the middle, which still makes this a good team, but it could use another Jones like addition.
And some help up front someone mean
