affects of Weatherford transferring

Didn`t Painter offer after G.W. and Cline played together on a allstar game outastate and it was his defense that made him. Maybe I`m wrong but there had to be something he wasn`t a big time scorer.

I'm not sure the point you're trying to make but yes he was offered for his defensive abilities. I don't think that is in question.

I know Grant was always questioned about not being talented enough. I felt like a guy like him would play the role of going in and giving 100%. Teams need those guys who just make practice rough. I guess I just figured Grant would of been a 4 year guy with a possible 5th year transfer. It really is confusing as well since Grant was going to Purdue to be an engineer. Best of luck to him anyways and hope he turns into a solid player.

What makes you think other guys aren't giving 100%? Just because a guy is less talented and it looks like he's trying harder, doesn't mean it helps the team, even in practice. That's what walk ons are for.

I'm just saying I hoped he would be a guy that goes in there and is extremely physical. Sweating his but off in two minutes of action.

Maybe Painter is getting away from his Defense first mentality. I'd love that to be the case.

the header " affects of Weatherford transferring" is confusing. What does that even mean?
or did the poster mean "effects of Weatherford transferring"

I understand typos; we all make them. Misused words, otoh, are just annoying. They create confusion.

Re: GW
“There’s a family connection there,” Fox said. “[Purdue] love the style of play he plays. They see him in the mold of Chris Kramer. He loves their team and loves their staff and he’s close friends with Ryan Cline.”

“That’s where he wanted to go,” Fox said. “He’s a life long Purdue fan. His dad went to Purdue.”

From Painter:
"I had promised myself when I saw someone who was close to Chris Kramer in terms of what he can do defensively and his effort I would take him again — no matter what," Painter said last April.

At this point, who cares? Not trying to nitpick, but all of this is moot now.

I hate this statement by Painter. He's so focused on defense that he's willing to offer a scholly to a marginal player just because he can play.
Then he wonders why he doesn't have someone who can get their own shot late in the shot clock.

Exactly, I would have liked Painter to go after a pg who can create his own shot. Now maybe he can do that.

those are typos not misused words. I can tolerate typos. Misused words just create confusion.
My brain must have spent half a minute trying to make sense of the subject line. My initial reaction was that it was some creative figurative speech so my brain kept trying to interpret what the writer meant. It took some staring at to figure out "affect" was never going to make sense and that perhaps the writer meant some other word with a completely unrelated meaning.

I get this. And even more than players leaving is PG's not sticking around. It's a legitimate concern. I think most on here did not have extremely high hopes of Weatherford and are ok with this, but our inility to keep and develop a PG (or better yet, pg'S) is disturbing.
Grant saw the situation and has acted appropriately given the roster next season. If he and the staff believed he was the next CK he would stay. To think he was going to be developed is just asking to much. RJ wanted to be the sole focus of the offense but didn't have that level of ability which he has shown since leaving. Bryson regrets his decision to leave by his own admission. I am not worried about our ability to keep them, but instead the decision to recruit them. Hopefully Carsen puts that concern to bed.

If your highest expectation is two minutes of hard sweating, someone else should be in the spot.

Just frustrated that Purdue is turning into transfer central. If we could address our needs with proper recruiting we wouldn't need to land grad transfers every year.
Do more players transfer from Purdue than the average high major school these days? It doesn't seem like it to me.

Correct me if I am wrong. We will have 10 scholarship players next year?

Right now, it looks like this:

1. Kendall Stephens (Sr.)
2. Basil Smotherman (RS Jr.)
3. Dakota Mathias (Jr.)
4. Vince Edwards (Jr.)
5. Isaac Haas (Jr.)
6. P.J. Thompson (Jr.)
7. Jacquil Taylor (RS So.)
8. Ryan Cline (So.)
9. Caleb "Biggie" Swanigan (So.)
10. Carsen Edwards (Fr.)
11. vacant
12. vacant
13. vacant

Man.... I'm hoping to the lord we have some solid recruiting classes coming in in 2017 & 2018. When the 2014 class + Basil are gone.... could be a repeat of 12-14. Need to reload.

Don't let any facts get in the way of Boiler#35's rant. He has tunnel vision, and every event, good or bad, is a personal affront to him.

You know this drill. Pick one and defend.
1. Why are we wasting a scholorship on a kid who will ride the bench for 4 years?
2. Why would we let a kid transfer who might be good someday?

To some folks every event is a lose-lose, especially if they have an agenda, and desprerately need some facts to justify it, regardless of how flimsy those "Facts" might be.

If the 9 remaining players all return for 2016-17, consider Purdue AHEAD of the pack in terms of transfers and early departures.

Among those making the decision to return (assuming no additional transfers and no one hires an agent):
-A former all freshman B1G guard who played only 14 mpg as a Junior
-An athletic 6'9" RS Soph forward who has barely seen the court in two years at Purdue, patiently learning behind 2 or 3 future NBA players
-A 5 star big man who came in with thoughts of being 1 and done and nearly performed well enough down the stretch to do so
-A pair of heralded shooters who have been content to seek first the post entry and shoot as a 2nd or 3rd option

These are the types of players you might expect to transfer at a lot of programs. That there is no mass exodus a la OSU tells me there is a healthy locker room and these guys are generally bought in.

MSU, Mich have 2 transfers this year, OSU 3....so I would say we are under the curve on transfers here @ Purdue

I believe Stephens is the only other possible departure, among the scholarship guys. Everyone else on that list will be returning, IMO.

Don't follow recruiting much? Check out the PGs MP was recruiting in 2014 and 2015.

IIRC, Purdue offered at least Brunson (starting for Villanova) and Jordan Ash.....CMP was also at different times interested in Glynn Watson, Coleman, and Hyron Edwards. I wouldn't say it was an issue of not prioritizing or failing to go after some quality recruits, but it's obviously been a difficult hurdle, exacerbated with RJ not working out. JMO

Looking forward to seeing what Carsen Edwards can do.....he will help, but I think it's a good idea to temper expectations for an incoming freshman.....however, really like everything I've seen about him, very much including his attitude.

I too am always wary of expecting too much from a freshman, but I like what I have seen and heard so far. Really looking forward to seeing what he can do at this level. Perfect opportunity this year with the overseas trip in August. That will be good for bonding as a unit and experience.

He offered Watson first and recruited him very hard, but when Watson chose Nebraska, the Huskers were coming off a very good season. Meanwhile, Purdue was coming off a last place finish with its starting point guard transferring and pretty much publicly trashing Painter for not giving him enough freedom. With that background, it wasn't shocking that Watson chose Nebraska.

I really think that Watson would have helped tremendously this season, even though he didn't have a great year at Nebraska. I think that he would have given Purdue a different dimension and he would have made the Boilers very hard to press.

Good point. I guess we will get to see some of Edwards earlier and see how he contributes. I am excited to see him but don't want to put too much pressure on him since he is a freshman.
