2022 Recruiting

Looks like a great get. Also fantastic to have two pieces in place so that the staff can concentrate on fewer players/open spots. Similar situation with the center position in the '20 class after Ivey and Morton committed. That allowed the coaches to quickly identify Edey after Dickinson and kalkbrenner didn't commit. Edey has proven to be a fantastic "backup" offer/commitment.

Hoping this will be a similar situation with Washington. Would love to land him, but it looks like the coaches have several irons in the fire if that doesn't pan out. Guessing our final two spots would be a SG and a big. Sound right? Any possibility we sign five in '21? Four seems most likely to me.

I’m guessing you meant ‘22.

We already have:
Smith (pg)
Loyer (sg)

And Heide would be a sg/sf

Can’t imagine why we would still need a sg after that.

It would give us 3 pieces for the 2022 class (Loyer, Smith, and Heide). My guess is we end up with 5 spots - and hopefully Washington is one of the remaining two.

Man rough post by me. Completely forgot about Loyer, who I'm actually really excited for and seems like a strong possibility for Mr. Basketball, and I did mean '22. Good call.

So if we have three and hit a home run and land Washington, where would a fifth schollie go? I feel like it'd be smarter to keep it at four and plan on filling any unexpected roster openings with a grad transfer.

If we land Heide, I think they will use 1 more scholarship in 2022. Carryover the other for 2023 based on the offers so far there. Try to get Washington or Reed as a big. Getting Justice Williams as a potential impact player in case we lose Ivey would also be great. Then go for a big in 2023.

I think they’ll look to use 5. It’s a different game with the new transfer rules. Plus there’s a non trivial probability of someone going pro early.

I'm afraid no good grad transfer will come to Purdue even if someone leaves. The roster is just too loaded! Here's the projected 2022 roster if Heide and Washington commit:

C: Edey, Furst
PF: TKR, Washington, Gillis
SF: Newman, Waddell, Heide
SG: Ivey, Loyer
PG: Morton, IT, Smith

You can pick any one of the players leaving, and our roster will still be loaded. Suppose Ivey leaves, and you still have {Newman, Heide, Waddell, Loyer, Morton, IT, Smith} fighting for 3 guard positions. A grad transfer probably wants to go somewhere he can have the path of least resistance to playing big minutes.

That's called 'riding the wave' so you get credit for being right when you really have no idea.

Hey.....I only bet on sure things, Pal.

I mostly agree, but there exists the possibility that an elite player on a crappy team also sees how loaded Purdue is, and wants to experience success.

With Loyer on board, I'm not sure that SG is a priority. But I suspect you are thinking of an Ivey type SG, which is always a priority.

Good get! We get a breakthrough recruit in the state of Minnesota!
As fellow Minnesotan , F Scott Fitzgerald would say, “it was always you”.

Good scholarship grid with potential recruits listed at the bottom.

For the '23 class, Dra would be a great get, especially since he is from the Purdue area (thought currently out in UT). Assuming no transfers or decommits, he would have Morton and Smith ahead of him, but hopefully as a top 20 recruit that doesn't scare you off, but make you want to earn harder. Not sure how many we would take, but hopefully we land Colvin as well! Good things ahead!

If Morton doesn't take a big step forward next year I think you could convince a high level transfer to come to Purdue after next year. If Morton does make a big leap I think it will be hard. Right now I'd take a Jon Octeus type player over any of the point guards listed. If Ivey stays another year (I hope he has a good year and doesn't) I could see him playing more point and Newman sliding over to the two.

I think grad transfers are and should be stop gap measures. Filling a hole that "ideally" isn't there if you are recruiting well. Tie up a scholly when you could (maybe) sign a top 100 freshman that will be there for 4 years??

I am a fan boy, but I believe Morton will make the biggest jump this year.

I think many of us are hoping that you are right.
In terms of team quality it's hard to imagine anyone else changing things as much as a real ball distributor type player would to this team.
If he becomes a rotation and impact player this team is going to be awfully tough.

Hunter was better playing off the ball. Would be great to get him back to that. Coming off screens, catch, one dribble, rhythm jumper, cash money.

Welp, scratch off Justice Williams

There were people on this board who felt like we were going after a point guard still even after we got Bradin Smith despite Camden Heide being ours to lose and rumored to be a soft verbal. It was speculated Heide would commit before Justice visit next week. Clearly that third spot was Heides’. And don’t be disappointed when Dix, McMillan, Karaban, and Rodgers commit elsewhere.
