#2 Alabama at #13 Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Berg shouldn’t be the starter or even playing unless the other 2 have foul trouble or we can’t play small. Only negative takeaway. Can’t tell you what he does to impact the game. Can’t score and doesn’t rebound.

Burgess or Furst should he starting
On the flip side to that, I think he played very well those first 5 mins of the game —for him. That was the best he looked so far. Now understand, it’s not where we need him to be to make a deep run with him playing major mins. But it was encouraging to see the effort and more physicality from him than we had seen in the first 3 games.
I don’t mind him starting games—it’s kinda like TKR last year…it forces the other teams to play us differently. Liking the rotations we have and the majority of the last 2 games, TKR has played the 5 with Heide at the 4. Even Furst looked a lot better out there last night. Then we get to our closing lineup and Berg is not there (which is fine) and we go small(er).

Hopefully, he continues to improve and understand his role to allow the team to be really successful.

This. I thought the rotation was perfect. And I thought berg did fine. game was very physical and then berg helped get some fouls called and it loosened it up for us offensively. Then we switched to small ball and were able to take off.

Really liked this lineup:

Smith
Cox
Loyer
Heide
TKR
Yes! I like starting with a big and bang with the big guys, open things up a bit with forcing some fouls. Then being in the speed and Heide can hit some 3s on offense and grab some rebounds on defense.

Heide is our leading rebounder per 40 minutes.l and he’s doing it against 4s.

Colvin is probably our best defender from what I see against very quick athletic guards, probably our most athletic offensive player to the rim, and a great shooter. He really has the tools to be special and he’s only 19. Painter has challenged him and he’s proven he’s up to it. I saw it last year and he’s already better than I was hoping for. Sky’s the limit.

I doubt Matt moves away from Berg...at least for a while. Much like Trey had minutes at the 4 last year with the anticipation dividends would be paid later in the season. Today, there is no question that Trey at the 5 is the best five. That has been known for some time. What is also known is that Berg is VERY inexperienced with some potential to improve. How much more improvement does Trey offer in the future at the five in comparison to Berg this year? The cast around Trey at the five offers some growth though. You want to win today, but you would like to have growth through the season and be the best rounded team later in the year, not at this moment...but you still want to win. Likewise, Burgess minutes will probably grow. Caleb is a known commodity as well.

Matt does NOT want a limited team. I believe he wants to be able to play big as needed and to shore up that internal D a bit better "if" possible? What happens if Trey gets foul trouble, hurt or just has a really off game? Berg may not be the answer. If not ,then Burgess gets more minutes perhaps? This team can score and Trey at the 5 can be explosive, but you do not want to peak out by December in versatility even with the growth we expect by the freshmen a bit. I expect Berg to start against Marquette and his minutes based upon his production. It is a long season and there is a reason why Berg has started even when Daniel was available...even if the results today are behind what is needed.

Yes. Heide rebounding well made it work. I hope he keeps that up. This team is better with him out there, and the 4 is his path to minutes.

As much as Cox offense gets attention, his defense against Sears to close the game was maybe just as impressive for a true Freshman? He didn't back down at all from the moment.

On that note it will be fun to see how Harris/Cox/Colvin improve defensively. It's early and they already seem ahead of the curve a bit.

Love, love, love Colvin not getting any shots but still impacting the game and bringing energy on D.

I'm rambling, but also noticesd Harris being fired up and one of first to congratulate Cox after his offensive outburst. These guys are all about winning and not sulking about who is getting minutes.

I like Heidi at the 4 as well. His leaping ability/athleticism allows him to play bigger than his size. I noticed the 8 rebounds as well on the stat sheet. He was tied with Kaufman-Renn for team high. He needs to be on the floor…now that Jacobsen is out for the season.

I thought Furst played well last night as well.

Yes. Cox, Harris, and Colvin all have really bright futures and all seem to be great teammates as well as talented players.

relative to that...last night I started to respond to @*4purdue* on a post relative to Burgess and never found it quick enough before catching a few minutes of the game. When the 1974 team was recognized months ago, a guard on that team (drawing a blank...maybe Shields?) living in Cincy asked Burgess why he chose Purdue. Burgess said he knew he would spend a lot of time with the players on the team and would have friends for life and knew this was a good group of guys that would make good friends for life. Culture a chosen desire!!!!

Yes, Furst was great. His experience showed and would love to see him carve out a nice role this year.

I think TKR/Heide/Furst/Burgess can carve out nice rotation at 4 and 5.

Use Berg when you need a big body to bang or take up some space. Keep playimg him some so he can improve, but points per possession had a clear drop with him in compared to the others. I think last night showed where the production will come from against high level teams.

Well said.

Braden was going nuts for CJ while he was on the bench and the barrage of 3s started to rain down in less than a min from CJ

DP, I told you last year that I hoped Colvin would finally get "it" at some point. I don't know if he's learned all he needs to learn yet, but he is playing better. Lots of options with this group of young men.

My take is that he is playing tentative on offense. My impression is that he isn't slow, he is just slow to react because he isn't quite sure what to do. We'll see if he gets into the flow after getting a few games under his belt.

I like Berg a lot and believe he has the potential to be a very solid player while here. He had to learn something playing against Zach every day in practice. Confidence will help him when he knows he's good enough to compete.

We need Berg to start so we can win the opening tip.

What bothers me is that he doesn't get off the ground to go after boards. I just don't know if the instinct is there.
I think that he isn’t the most athletic there. So he needs to really understand to use his body/butt and his man out. He’s not out jumping guys at this level (which is fine), but will need to figure out how to box his man out with his large frame.

Not enough quick twitch. Too slow footed.
