Matt Painter interview by Cuonzo Martin

I recently discovered a podcast by former Boiler Cuonzo Martin.

Before the start of this season Cuonzo Martin interviewed Coach Painter. A lot interesting tidbits from Coach Painter.

Another interesting tidbit about Cuonzo Martin. Many years ago Cuonzo Martin coached Tennessee to the Sweet 16, and the Tennessee fans wanted Coach Martin out because they did not make it further in the tournament.

Night and day difference on day one of spring practice

A “night and day” difference from a year ago gives Purdue optimism as spring practice kicks off in West Lafayette.

Head coach Ryan Walters offers his thoughts on day one. ⬇️ (Free for your viewing pleasure).

Tennessee fans are the absolute worst. A reasonable Vol fan posted that the better team won and he's catching all kinds of hell from Vol fans...

Look how many replies in this thread are saying Tennessee is the better team and a ref conspiracy handed Purdue the game. This poor guy is getting crap from Tennessee fans, wishing harm on his family, etc.

This is worse than the bowl game reaction.

A treasure

Keady and Painter. Izzo said it and he's right. We need to treasure them. Has it been frustrating - for sure. But 44 years of consistent blue collar, built from the ground up basketball. Good basketball. Basketball that has resulted in the winningest program in the Big Ten - as measured by total wins and conference championships. Basketball we can be proud of. The Boilermaker way. Paint's a gym rat, always has been. An encyclopedia of basketball, and really all around sports knowledge. There's not a true basketball person in the country that doesn't respect what they do. Owns failures straight up without excuses.

Adaptive old school basketball built from the ground up, with good, coachable kids that play with heart and for each other - for their school - and willing to bust A$$ is exceedingly fun to watch.

Boiler Up and LFG!!!!

I hate iu, but UT is making a push

Extremely obnoxious hill Jack (literally) fans. Not dissimilar to iu but with a better football program.
They’re still whining about the Music City Bowl (not only was the ball carrier stopped, but his o lineman pulled him into the end zone. That’s illegal) and the S16 loss 5 years go.
Looking forward to Edey face planting their front court.

TN next year

If they all come back I wonder if they won't be next years Champs. Ziegler, the pg is discussed exactly as we discuss Braden. They talk about him making cultural changes in the lockerroom, "that' kind of effect on the program. Was also huge outrage that he didn't make the PG honors lists. Tore an ACL ONE YEAR AGO last month and looked as fast as anyone I've seen. If Knecht and he both return they'll be hard to beat.

Some disgusting human beings out there

Of course we all know that but this is Purdue basketball related.

Carson Barrett tore his meniscus earlier this year. The injury required surgery, but this is the last run for the Purdue senior. Though he’s never seen a whole lot of playing time in his career, he wanted to at least have a shot at getting on the court this season. So Barrett delayed the repair work, gladly taking the exchange of some pretty painful nights with a throbbing knee in favor of even a few minutes of hooping.

This season he’s played a grand total of 21 minutes and scored six points. Three of them came in the NCAA Tournament. With 37 seconds left in a game long decided, Barrett drained a baseline 3 against Grambling State, putting himself in the box score of Purdue’s first-round victory. As the ball swished through the net, the bench erupted, Barrett’s teammates knowing full well what he’d sacrificed and endured. His bucket would be the last for the Boilermakers as Purdue cruised to a 78-50 win. Back in the locker room, Barrett picked up his phone and scrolled through the congratulatory texts from friends and started to search through his DMs on social media.

He stumbled on this:

You sure are a son of a b—.
Hope you enjoy selling cars for the rest of your life.

Followed by:

I hope you f-ing die.

And then the kicker:

Kill yourself for taking that 3 you f-ing worthless loser. Slit your f-ing throat you f-ing f– that was completely uncalled for. I hope you f-ing kill yourself.

The Boilermakers were 27-point favorites against Grambling. Barrett’s bucket meant they won by 28. “I had no idea what the line was,” Barrett said. “I’m just out there, making memories with my friends.”

People have suggested, not necessarily politely, that Edey send a Venmo for the money he cost them because of his failure to reach whatever threshold Vegas had set for his individual numbers. “People have been hating on me since my sophomore year. What do I care if Billy who put 30 bucks on the game is mad at me?”

The Dome Effect

Okay, I know the court dimensions are the same and every other team is playing in the same environment, but how does playing in a dome with 75,000 spectators affect our game. UConn has been there before, the rest of the teams have probably only played in arenas with a capacity of 20,000. In some ways it seems like the players are more isolated on the playing surface and away from spectators. On the other hand, it's a lot of open air. Hopefully we have a lot of shooting opportunities. Somebody compiled statistics a few years ago and conclude there was no "dome" effect to shooting.

4-star CB enjoys return Purdue visit

Purdue hosted Mason Alexander again late last week. The Boilermakers made another good impression on the four-star defensive back.

"It was nice for sure they always show big love," Alexander said.

I asked the Hamilton Southeastern star what stood out the most about the visit since this wasn't his first time on campus:

"Just how they always make it known I’m one of their top prospects in the class," Alexander said.

I can see coach Ryan Walters and company in this recruitment until the end. The next step is getting Alexander locked in for an official visit which I expect to happen.
