Defense

I think our defensive effort these last few games has been MUCH better. Our 3 point shooting has declined a bit though. I'm wondering if the two are going hand in hand. Extra effort on D may be taking a little out of the legs for these shots? Not sure. I think the shooting will come back eventually. Was hard to watch Thompson go 0-6 or whatever it was last night. We need him to be a threat.

Nebraska Message Boards (Selected Excerpts)

Not a lot of posters for a Nebraska basketball team that has underperformed to date, but there are some good ones with senses of humor and a tinge of sarcasm mixed with bitters. Generally, a very knowledgeable group who realize their season is a dumpster fire but appreciate good basketball. Anyway, enjoy!

Purdue has weaknesses to exploit. First, perimeter defense sucks, if you can make 3s it can keep you in the game. Ivey has moments of brilliance and moments of catastrophe. Inside, try to push the bigs Williams or Edey up the paint and out of their favored scoring and rebounding positions.

We've never previously been a 20-plus point dog under Fred.

I will be disappointed if we lose by more than 20.5.

Mackey is LOUD. What an atmosphere!

Just imagine how loud it gets when they're not playing the worst team in the conference.

Ref calls a ticky-tack foul on Derrick Walker 19 seconds into the game.

Start off with a foul and then it turned over.

Ref calls second foul on Derrick Walker 2:22 into the game.

Boilers will be in the bonus before the National Anthem is done. Walker already with 2 fouls.

We might have everyone foul out.

Five fouls on Nebraska in a conference that’s supposed to be all about physical play. it’s already ref ball and this game just started.

6 fouls in 3 minutes and 4 turnovers.

Coming into the game, I probably would have said that 2 fouls on Walker, Bryce, or Eduardo before the first media timeout would be the worst case scenario. So of course, all three of them picked up a pair.

5 min into the game, and I think I need a drink!!

Hard to tell... did we lose that first five minute segment?

Good night to throw a shot of whiskey in your beer!

Matt Painter could suit up for us, and we’d instantly be a better rebounding team.

Will we get more points than fouls?

Just look at the difference in body types in the floor... It's kind watching a high school varsity team play a middle school team.

Too bad we couldn’t just have a game of 3-on-3 with all the guys 6’9” or taller…

Frost can rest easy knowing he is currently the 2nd worst coach in the Nebraska athletic dept. Fred is laughing all the way to the bank. Fred fooled us all.

Zach Edey being able to run a sub-six minute mile at 7-4, 300 pounds is the most impressive athletic feat I have ever heard.

Good news: Purdue's defense seems optional at times. Bad news: Purdue is awesome offensively.

We have a team of offensive players that can’t really play offense either, is what we have.

Every year Purdue has multiple players who are over 7’ tall. We can’t get a one to come here.

That’s it…. I’m walking on. Who’s coming with me?

I....think I"m going to put this team on ignore/mute/total denial of their existence the rest of the evening. Condolences to those of you choosing to remain.

Gotta say, there have been several times I’ve been unimpressed with a highly ranked conference foe but Purdue looks like the real deal. Seemed like everyone who entered the game could make a play. And Ivey is real good.

For how poorly this game started, Nebraska has made some plays. They’re no longer completely overwhelmed, they’re just whelmed.

If you could magically erase the 14-0 run, we are only down 1.

Really struggling to find positives. I guess we've settled down, and I don't think we will lose by more than 35 now.

I'm not going to say the refs are the reason we are losing, Purdue is a really solid team, but man are the refs bad!

There's are going to be plenty of teams that make the tourney that get run out of Purdue on any given night. Fred is not a failure for getting his butt kicked by Purdue, he's a failure because he loses to Western Illinois and his teams don't finish games they COULD win, like Illinois and Ohio State.

100% Purdue is a great team. But we don’t even look like we belong in the same conference as these guys.

Out scored them 29-25 to end half after down 23-4.

Wow. Purdue may just want to run a black/gold scrimmage in the 2nd half to get more of a workout. We are utterly helpless.

The effort is there tonight. Gotta stick in this 2-3 zone and pray that Purdue stays cold from deep, and we heat up.

Painter complaining about calls when his team was in the bonus 3 minutes into each half. Read the room guy.

Would kill for a guy who coached hungry like that.

We talk about Hoiberg exhibiting zero energy. Painter is engaged the entire game even when you're playing a #250/worst conference opponent type of game.

It's 57-41 Purdue with 14:55 to go. Nebraska called for six fouls in the first three minutes of this half, too.

Back up to 65-43 here. In a season full of bad matchups for Nebraska this is the most lopsided of them all personnel-wise.

I don't know who the hot mic was, but someone said that "if you don't quit, you're going to get a technical." If that was directed at Fred, go ahead and get one. The team has played very carelessly with the basketball, have made bonehead play after bonehead play. You are down 23, Purdue has been in the bonus the 1st 5 minutes in the 1st half, and 1st 3 minutes in the 2nd half, and the only way the other team gets a foul called on them is if they knock the Nebraska guy down, and sometimes they don't even get that called.

When does Painter call off the dogs? This is rude!

Finally getting to the point in the game where it starts to look like a half-assed scrimmage. Judging from results, I assume this is normally how we practice, so we should excel the rest of the way.

I've been a Husker fan since 1959 and I can say this is the most inept attempt at basketball that i can remember. This team just simply sucks. Hope FH just lets the clock run and go home.

I didn't buy enough NyQuil to get through this season.

I think we'd be a competitive Summit team, we wouldn't win the league, but we would win some games.

I’ve got nothing left in me as it relates to this Nebraska basketball team so I’m going to try to find the positive in our opponents. I’ve really come around on Matt Painter in the past couple of years. Never used to think much of him but I think I may have been wrong. Seems like a decent guy and a pretty damn good coach.

You know you're a pretty good coach then the university makes their official mascot after you...or they just hire coaches that look like their mascot, I don't know...

This Painter mic is super annoying, also. Of course, they couldn't mic me up if I was a coach unless they had multiple people to sub for the beep buttons.

Could have sworn in that last miked up moment, Painter said," Let's Go Brandon."

From the files of: Loony libs at it again....I give you: "The hunger strike threat!"

This type of lefty lib looniness just makes me smile. I love it, I really do.

I went to their website and sent them this message:

"I will pledge $1,000 to Un-Pac for each member who completes the hunger strike by ending in death. I think this is a worthy cause and commend your organization for taking these necessary steps of action to drive change."

Purdue women's basketball First Thoughts and GoldandBlack.com game thread: Purdue-Nebraska

Good evening, everyone, from the bowels of Mackey Arena, or the Chipotle on Salisbury, one or the other.

Purdue meets Nebraska here tonight at 6:30. Not 7, 6:30.

Anyone, it is what it is here. Nebraska's 0-6 in the Big Ten and terrible defensively. They've been competitive at home — they are not at home tonight — but have routinely crumbled when it's come time to actually win the game.

They have some formidable backcourt that can be a headache for Purdue, though, so this will be a good test of the Boilermakers' discipline at both ends of the floor.

Anyway, three things ...

• Don't screw around: Nebraska's path to competitiveness here lies with Purdue. If the Boilermakers jack around, take bad shots, turn the ball over and get too cute, as they did against Wisconsin, they will be the Cornhuskers' sixth man.

I don't think Nebraska can beat Purdue in a halfcourt game. They can stick to the bottom of Purdue's shoe if the Boilermakers give them run-outs and then you never know what can happen.

• Be the more physical team. Derrick Walker is going to play his tail off against Trevion Williams and Zach Edey and it was just two games ago that Edey lamented not being as tough or physical as he needed to be to open the game vs. the Badgers. That's been a trend that I suspect might be tied to him trying to feel out the officiating.

Tonight, those guys will need to move Walker to get the post position they want, keep him off the offensive glass and not pick up the sort of fouls that can get them in trouble.

Walker's the sort of guy who might be able to hold those to only 25 and 10 between them on relative inefficiency, then get 12 and seven himself.

This, to me, is the key matchup to the game.

• Be good in help: Couple weeks ago I asked a couple Purdue players what the path to improvement defensively was and they all said "Stay out of help." I don't know if that was a better answer than "Be better in help," but who am I to judge?

Look, Alonzo Verge can be a runaway train at times, but he'll break Purdue down a bunch. Bryce McGowens will take advantage by finding driving lanes when Purdue is broken down. And the last thing you want is one of these other ditch-diggers on the floor to pull a bunch of threes out of their backside.

That's what I've got.

Follow along here or on the Twitter machine at @brianneubert.

I'll have full coverage tonight and hopefully a more coherent game story than I've been writing lately as I'm dealing with my annual format remorse.

Discuss the game here or however you wish.

Chances MI drops their IL game also?

Coach..I still have a headache. Ok, well, we'll cancel the Illinois game too.
It might be in Purdue's favor to have MI postpone their Illinois game. MI would have such a back log of games to make up, they would not be able and therefore have to forfeit. That would go down as a win for Purdue, as opposed to a no contest, which is better than exerting any energy in traveling to AA to beat MI.
