Purdue at Washington: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

The beauty of last night...whether jet lag or whatever was the scare of not playing well at the start. I doubt Purdue needs reminded against Oregon and expect them to be sharper out of the gate
Some of these posts by the same dopes get my blood pressing riding, at 54 with a 1 year old it’s probably high enough lol. Can you imagine if after half Painter benched TKR who finished with 19 and 6 the rest of the game? Or how about benching all the starters playing the reserves? Sure let’s play Burgess/Waddell/Berg, Harris, Heide, that would win them the game. There’s a few on here that have the takes of a spoiled 10 year old child expecting Purdue to just roll over teams every game.

Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

I agree and Purdue will also have a roster to more than match it if everyone returns. My belief is that if Smith is not the top returning player in the country next season, he will certainly be in the conversation. He deserves top compensation.

I think that the field is leveling, but there will continue to be outside sources of money as well and there will be a group of schools that have a lot more to spend than the rest (with IU being one of them). There will also be a lot of teams with marginal returning talent who have a boatload of money to spend in the portal. Purdue will just need to do what Purdue has been doing well by rewarding the players who have produced for Purdue first.
If my XRP crypto holdings continue to do well, I'll be significantly upping my NIL contributions. So, everyone go out and start loading up on XRP!!

well I'm here to say I was one of his biggest detractors over the years and during this 6 game win streak I gave him some kudos after the 2nd game but wanted to see a larger sample size. Man, I'm now buying into his play and really really happy for him. Watched the whole game last night and he was fantastic, did well at FT's, made some nice shots underneath, rebounded well, stayed out of foul trouble, played great D. Hope he keeps it up and I'm soooo glad I was wrong about the kid, I just always wondered why he couldn't do better w/ the talent he has esp after watching for a couple of years not a couple of games. Glad for you Caleb.

During the 6 game winning streak.....

Since 12/29, Purdue:
  • is 6-0 obviously
  • is #4 in efficiency margin
  • is #6 in offensive efficiency
  • is #23 in defensive efficiency
  • is #10 in effective FG %
  • is #33 in offensive turnover %
  • s #33 in defensive turnover %
  • is #6 in wins above bubble

We held serve against 6 teams we realistically should have beaten. Time to see how the new lineup stacks up against someone we aren't supposed to.

Interestingly, if Purdue can find a way to get by Oregon, they'll likely be favored the next 5 games as well (OSU, Michigan, IU, @Iowa, USC) before the gauntlet last 7 games arrive. 12-1 would obviously be amazing but legitimately, 11-2 is the likely record needed to have a better than level chance at a 3rd straight B1G title.

Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

I see 2 scenarios.
1. Painter sees a team weakness, such as rebounding, and he doesn't expect the current players and incoming recruits to provide enough improvement.
2. Key veterans graduate or enter the portal, leaving a gap in experience at one or more positions. This seems to be the main reason for Painter drawing from the portal/transfer market.
In your opinion, if there were no roster changes other than Furst graduating, do you think Painter should use the portal this off season? (and no, you can't say "well, that's up to coach Painter". That's a cop out. I'm curious about what your opinion is).

Former commit "going through it right now"

Catchings had 3 fouls in 7 minutes of action last night. I keep track of boxscores from BYU (Catchings), Colorado State (Morton) and Duke (Gillis). Gillis had his best game last night hitting 4 3's in about 15 minutes off the bench.

Purdue definitely dodged a bullet with Catchings...I was critical of Painter not guaranteeing minutes...but now see Catchings as a disruptive cancer on any team. Until he grows up...he will not play in the NBA.

Looks more and more like a 4 year player. I am sure though with the right coaching, he can be very good..... eventually.

Wonder what happens if his BYU NIL $.......suddenly dries up??

Trump flexed, Hamas caved.. Shocker

Right, it's exactly like the release of Iran embassy hostages when Reagan became president. A pathetic wimp POTUS does nothing for over a year, then when a tough-talking new sheriff takes over - boom, hostages released. Israel may need to drop a couple dozen 2,000 lb smart bombs into Gaza to get Hamas thinkin' straight.
Yeah, but....Chamberlain was good against the NAZIs...oh wait, that was wrong as well.

Purdue at Oregon

Tough to grow with inconsistent minutes like that.

Swanson has some turnover issues but that's about everyone else on the team. Her shot selection could be better, but she is just more dynamic offensively and defensively compared to Collier. She's still very young, considering she didn't even play that much last season(12.6 mins). Give her some leash and let her grow. Jones had a big leash yesterday and played better for it in the 2nd half.

CKG has been quick to bench alot of players for bad play. I get wanting to teach players lessons and especially in tight games, these turnovers could be killer, but we haven't been in tight games. Let these underclassmen work through their turnovers/mistakes.

The posts were alright yesterday but we double teamed Kyei alot. When she wasn't double teamed, she had her way. My biggest issue with the posts right now is the ball screen coverage. Our guards are left out to dry on screens, while our posts sit back protecting the drive. Oregon hit alot of mid range jumpers because of this.

I agree on the growth with inconsistent minutes statement. Its one of the reasons CKG frustrates me and its been a characteristic of her coaching from day 1. Learn would play 28 minutes and have a great game, then next game only get 2minutes. Its not just hard to get growth as a player with those kinds of inconsistent minutes, its hard to mentally prepare for games not knowing if or how much you are going to play from one game to the next.

I am even more confused by CKG's coaching. I did not watch the Oregon game, just followed along on the play by play on ESPN. But against Betts, the best center in the nation, we did not double team and left our posts out on an island against her nearly the whole game. Part of that was us trying to play a lot of zone against UCLA which was totally ineffective. Our posts for the past two decades nearly always play drop coverage on screens, its part of the Versyp/Gearlds coaching philosophy. Its not very effective, but its what we do.

Maybe, they’re not a great team, however, on the road Purdue has to play much better than last night to have a chance. A first half like yesterday and Purdue is likely down 15 at a minimum verse Oregon, that can’t happen.

Their starters go 6'0, 6'5, 6'5, 6'9, 7'0. Their top bench guy is 6'1.

Shelstad at 6'0 is a stud. Started slow this year but is tearing it up of late. It will be another great test for CJ/Braden. Bittle, the 7'0 dude is an interesting guy and will be a different matchup for TKR.

They don't generate a ton of steals (ranked 103rd) and are just 16th in the conference in conference only games in forcing turnovers.

Bittle is the guy that caught my eye during the little I watched them. Massive. Wondered how we would match up. Another kid (Angel?) was also impressive as he was all over the place, making things happen both ways.

I agree, big test. Will look forward to how CMP game plans for it. Their low steals & turnovers bodes well for us.

Oregon will likely be a slight favorite with it being a home game. Definitely have to shoot better to beat them.

Have only caught them in passing on commercials or halftimes of games of more interest........Do you think they have the length and speed at guards to give us (Braden) fits?

But the deal did occur under Biden's watch.

It's crazy to me how Poole is being played. 7 minutes against MSU, no minutes against UCLA, start and get 11 minutes against Michigan, and then DNP again against Oregon.

Amiyah starts several games, but gets single digit minutes in many/most of them.

Collier still starting even though her numbers in Big Ten play are atrocious. She leads the team in minutes played at 29.5, but averages 4.5 ppg which is 7th on the team and the greatest shooter Katie Gearlds has EVER seen is shooting a blistering 30% fro the field and from behind the arc.

Another positive I would mention is our freshmen posts held their own against 6'8" Kyei. Kyei still got 12 points, but she did not dominate us the way you might think a senior that big might.

I think both deserve credit, I realize on these boards this isn’t likely a good answer. The partisanship on here is an example of how social media has divided this country, we actually have groups of people (both sides) that would rather see things go bad than give the other side credit.

I am sure the Biden team, did some background work, and will concede that.

But hopefully you remember from Purdue Chemistry...... sometimes big chemical reactions takes a CATALYST, and it sure wasn't Biden. Without the catalyst nothing happens.
