Just curious. Haven't followed the story closely. Read the article on the home page, but it didn't gave an explanation on why he was upset at Purdue/basketball program.

I don't have any first-hand knowledge, but from my understanding, two main issues that those closer to the program have stated:

1. Unhappiness with son Rich's place on the team under Coach Keady; and

2. Woody Austin wearing No. 10 jersey.

Regardless, it was great to see a Purdue legend back in Mackey after being away for nearly 30 years, but unfortunately, the second half put a little bit of a damper on the whole festivities.

Thanks! Very helpful.

Never met the guy, but he seems unhappy. You can't go through life holding grudges (like my mother-in-law lol). Happy he came back!

Too bad that this is over a grudge about another player wearing his number. If it is the rule that they don't retire jersey numbers then I guess it is okay for them to let somebody else wear it. Mount wanted Keady to call him about it but I am not sure he should have had too?

Speaking of jersey numbers, I believe there are two pretty good number 13's to pair up with 10's in Purdue's history. I think both 13 jerseys are in the rafters so you can honor more than one person that wears a number and not diminish what either has done for their university.

Hard to know what really happened, but I do think a phone call would have been appropriate if one wasn't made.

Wow, that's incredibly sad. "Life goes on, with or without you." Well put, Gene. Hopefully Mount eventually learns to get over his grudges. You miss out on a lot when you are that bitter.

I'm a Purdue alum - graduated in 95, but not from Indiana. Had heard of Rick Mount - but basketball wasn't a religion where I am from. I read up on him as it came to light he was going to come back.

Seems odd to me that he is/was essentially estranged from his high school, college and pro teams. I think many super star athletes are cut from a different cloth. I think the the real special ones are the types that can eventually figure out when their time on the court/field is done and help others in different ways.

Brian Cardinal is working with JPC, Drew Brees seems to have strong connection back to Purdue. Neil Armstrong and the work he did with Purdue, etc.

Not going to talk bad about the guy. Clearly he has a sweet shot.

However, seems like a shame it took him this long to get over some perceived hurt feelings over a jersey and his kids playing time.

Seems like perhaps Rick Mount was the innovator of the helicopter parent.

The guy is a Legend at Purdue, he came back, said he had a great time, let it go.
It's a college basketball message board. More specifically it's a Purdue message board. People are talking about a former Purdue player. Seems like a reasonable topic. If you don't like the conversation go on to a different thread. There are plenty to choose from.

I must say I am a bit surprised as to the amount of "entitlement" Rick Mount feels he is owed by the university and the basketball program. He was great, but his son did not have B1G talent, and Purdue does not retire jerseys. IMO, I don't even really think he deserved a phone call about the jersey. We appreciate your greatness, but get over yourself.

You hit the nail on the head.I was at the game Saturday, and even though the loss was very disappointing,it was great to see Rick and his family. They made it all worthwhile.
I was there also and couldn't have cared less he was there. I don't think that makes either one of us better or worse fans. I think it's perfectly legitimate to question where he has been all these years. That is what the OP asked and several including myself gave some explanations. Once the explanations were given some people were critical of him and we got the "he's a legend, just drop it" crap.

As I stated in another thread, I'm trying to give him the benefit of doubt and assume that he wasn't prepared to speak. Because if he was, that was a terrible speech and one that a die-hard fan who has attended many, many games over the past 30 years doesn't want to hear from him.

It's a message board and we are discussing the topic. There is no need for you or anyone else to tell people to "drop it" because you don't like what they are saying.

Yes sir, we won't be happy about Rick coming back to Purdue, sorry our happiness offended you.
Your happiness wasn't offensive at all. It was your statement for anyone else that disagreed with you to "drop it" that was the problem. Please continue to be happy, sir.
