Why did Purdue not target any transfer OL?

Knowing OL is an area of concern, why did we not pickup a ready to go transfer or JUCO that could provide valuable contributions? I’m not in the know on roster and developed players, yet today’s article was concerning that it remains a weak spot with 2018 Graduate departures. We seem to be WR heavy, but minimal OL to protect long enough to get the ball aired out to them. Since coach is from Louisville, I might be getting the rope a dope special Muhammad Ali style, I hope that is the case.

one thought / theory. Two of our LB recruits are going to sign later and be counted against our 2020 class. if brohm is going to use that strategy for 2 recruits, he could use the same strategy for an OL transfer.

I'm not saying he is going to go out and sign 5 more offensive linemen and have them count against our 2020 scholarships. But if he sees a need after the spring practice and game, Brohm has proven his resourcefulness with recruiting rules to locate and sign a possible grad transfer or juco or transfer with immediate eligibility to fill the need.

We only have one open slot to sign a player prior to camp.

Also, juco linemen are a crap shoot. How many did he bring in in his first class? How many played?

Purdue hasn’t had good history with juco OL however some good ones do come from juco. I believe Brohm only brought in one juco OL so far. Grad transfers has been his move

This is why I believe he's waiting until after the Spring game before taking any action to sign anybody. If we look good, he'll go forward with what we have. If we look bad, I'm confident he already has the names of 10-15 people he's following and in contact with. Another path he has taken is the preferred walk-on. I wouldn't expect him to go that route to find a starter, But he may find a practice player or add some emergency 3rd string depth. Maybe a long snapper or somebody.

Yeah, I was lunping Ellis into that fail equation.

I don’t particularly like juco linemen. Take too long to acclimate and are a crap shoot. Really good ones are already off the board

Admittedly the jucos who have come to Purdue have been very underwhelming.

With that said, Brohm brought in a grad transfer o lineman last year. He was a center who could play guard.

Two questions. How did he perform? And when did he actually sign? Wasn't he kind of a late signee?

Edwards announced his transfer in May. He performed well, but he spent 3 years with Brohm at WKU.

Commitment dates of Brohm OL grad transfers:
David Steinmetz - May 10
Dennis Edwards - May 21
Shane Evans - June 2

There's still lots of time. The real question is scholarships. Last I knew there was one hanging out there. Then Holt's kid committed and I don't know if it was answered definitely whether he was taking a scholly.

There will be more grad transfers available after their respective team's spring practices end; particularly from places where recent coaching changes have happened or will happen in the coming months. (This timing also lets Purdue better assess the current situation and determine what minimum skill level would still represent an improvement.) Those players would follow a similar timeline to this one and could be counted against the 2020 class if he wanted them to if I understand correctly. In that case, if they leave in December, the 2020 spot will open up again at that time if I'm not mistaken. There's still plenty of time to address this. No need to panic just yet. Besides, I think that the current roster, though inexperienced, is more talented than a lot of people may think and we're in pretty good shape at the 2 starting left tackles.

that's understandable considering he wanted to come to Purdue and we didn't even give him an offer. a tremendous oversite by hazell and Company.
Wait, do I understand this correctly? If Cronk transfers to Purdue, he couldn't play in 2019, right? If that's true, the only transfer that would help in 2019 would be a Grad transfer, or a JUCO.

Call me naive, but I"m thinking that we'll be fine in 2020, with the 4 2019 true Freshman. I don't know this, but I'd think we'll redshirt Monnot and, maybe Craig. I also think that Holstege and Jornigan will contribute valuable PT in 2019.

It is possible to graduate in 3 years. Especially from IU

Well, does anyone know if this is what's happening, for Cronk? Or is this just idle speculation? Sorry, I'm not trying to be stupid, I'm just asking because I don't know.

My guess is total idle speculation. the thread started by saying are we looking for any o-linemen to transfer, and somebody suggested Cronk.

nothing more than a wish.

We should have 2-3 open slots at the end of the semester. We might have more as guys are recruited over and they get buried on the depth chart. I’m pretty sure we will add at least 1 interior OL

basically, at this point, if we add anybody, the y will count against our 2020 class. We already have the two linebackers counting against that class. how many more athletes do you want to count against the 2020 class?

although if we added a grad transfer to the 2020 class, and they graduated /left after the first semester, would that open up a spot for the 2020 class? i.e. we just added Holt. if he left after one semester, would that open up a 2020 scholarship, or would he count for the entire year?

No, it wouldn’t open up another spot

Hmmm - a certain Purdue coach just started following him on twitter.

I believe every poster here would welcome him. The key would be for him to arrive as a grad transfer rather than as a normal transfer and sitting out a year. I believe he would be one player worth giving up one of our 2020 scholarships for.

This is his third year. it's my understanding that as long as a player graduates, he's eligible to play immediately. I've seen a couple of players who used the Summer to finalize their grad requirements. I've also seen a couple of athletes who used the Summer to gain and/or regain their eligibility. I once completed a BBA in Finance at UTSA within one year using transfer credits from Purdue and by attending two other colleges in San Antonio and also transferring those classes within that year.

I don't know what his major is or what his current academic standing is, but I'm confident with today's online college technology, if he wanted to complete his degree by this Summer, that he could.

As for coming to Purdue. I know he'd be a welcome addition. But I have no idea if he's even thought about it. I also have no idea about the NCAA rules of recruiting / making contact with a player who is already on another team.

He's at IU. He probably has a masters by now.

I find it very interesting that several people on this board with inside sources have brought his name up. it makes me wonder if this is just wishful thinking, or if there is actually some basis for their posts.

My memory is still in working order. At one time Cronk was really excited about and wanted to play for Purdue. reading his high school recruiting interviews, Purdue was his first choice. and the Hazell administration placed a very bad taste in his mouth not even bothering to give him so much as even an offer. I can understand him wanting to finish his career and his degree at IU.. I can also understand his father being pissed at Purdue.

but I also speculate a lot . there were a lot of o-linemen I would have liked to see come to Purdue. But unlike all the rest, Cronk's name is the one that always seems to keep coming up. and now in the past week, two different posters brought up his name once more?

and why am I so interested in Cronk? it's not because I believe he's a stud linemen or the missing piece we need. or that he's a perfect fit for our offensive system. I'm not sure what position he actually plays. it's simply because he was a kid who actually wanted to come to Purdue even when our program was bad. he wanted to come to Purdue to make a difference. to me, he's sort of like GK. a local kid growing up loving Boiler football. It would have been nice if Purdue could have made that happen.

Not wishful thinking at this point in time. Take that and run with it how you please.

you're now the third person to drop a hint. I'd welcome it if it happened. and I'd understand if it didn't. As I said, when he was in high school, his stated dream in his interviews was to play for Purdue. and then along came Hazell to kill that dream. I'm not sure if he has plans/hopes to play in the NFL or not. I would believe a 3 year starter (if he remained at IU) would at last be drafted.

and I'd approve the use of a 2020 scholarship to make it happen and welcome Cronk to Purdue for one last year. He would fill a weakness, and it would make a nice ending for a story of a local boy coming home to finish his college career - sort of like the Walker brothers coming back home to play basketball for Purdue.

if you know him or see him, I want him to play for us.

As a graduate transfer a player is immediately eligible. So the question is, will he graduate by August?

The biggest issue with any grad transfer. Would be to graduate in May in order to be able to practice with the team in the Summer. I would be concerned with any grad transfer no matter how talented they are with them just showing up 2 weeks before the season started and expected to be a contributor.
