Where was Smotherman?????

I skipped the thread after a few of the wild guesses in the first 4-5 posts. During the pre-game show before the PSU game, Cliz asked CMP essentially the same question when asking about the rotation. CMP's first words out of his mouth were that unfortunately Basil has been the odd man out this season when it comes to more minutes and that's a shame. The fact is that he doesn't play in to the role of playing major minutes unless injury, foul trouble, or a very specific matchup calls for it. It wouldn't have mattered who was guarding Bridges last night...he was going to get 20-30 with that type of shooting night.

Basil just happens to be the 9th man in a solid 8 man rotation this season.

1: Biggie
2: Mathias
3: Vince
4: PJT
5: Carsen
6: Haas
7: Cline
8: Spike
9: Smotherman

There is just a shorter rotation and I don't think it is a reflection of Basil in any way other than he isn't good enough to crack that 8 man rotation...he isn't the ball handler that Spike is, isn't the shooter that Cline is, and he isn't a big man to sub in for Biggie/Vince.

Painter is playing the most effective line up. Basil is where he belongs, on the bench. This year Painter is making in game decisions and letting people play who are having success real time. Last night in the second half I think Isaac complained at one point when he was taken out. Biggie was the man. It's all about matchups.

Charts or no charts I'm perfectly happy with the way our sub-par coach is getting it done with the lineup.

Just for the record, you must have me confused with another poster. I like Matt. I like how he recruits, puts together a plan for each team and how he makes adjustment at halftime.

I have always tried not to criticize any Purdue coach or player. My contention the past two years has been to get Haas more playing time. Since you see this as a criticism at Matt, then I will expand, because maybe it is.

The game against MSU at MSU was reffed more like a playoff game with a much more physical battle. Haas has to be used more in a physical game. He has to be playing 25 minutes per game, so he will be in shape come the playoffs, when the games are more physical. The MSU coach was constantly whining that Haas was traveling and Haas had TO's and still needs to improve. He also did not seem to go to the offensive boards as aggressively as he was. However, Haas had strong moves, boxed out his man hard allowing Mathias to snare some rebound and most importantly he passed out of double teams twice hitting an open man for a wide open 3. He continues to tire out their big men and rack up fouls on them.

IIRC, Basil was in the class with Beaucham and Irvin as small forwards in Indiana being recruited by Purdue. We lost the other two and that class that entered Purdue has not really panned out. It seems to just have been a bad year for MP recruiting-wise.

At the time, it looked like a very solid class: Basil Smotherman, Kendall Stephens, and Bryson Scott, plus Jay Simpson after he received a medical red-shirt waiver.

You just never know how these things are going to play out....I like that CMP has things headed in a more positive direction with recruiting, although I suppose the results are never as fast or as productive as the most optimistic hope for. Nojel Eastern should be a really good fit in the backcourt. We'll see what happens with the front-court.

My post was just a general comment. Not aimed at you.

NP. I do not like when someone puts down a coach or player. I was in a hurry, but after reading over what I wrote, I realized I should have praised Matt before criticizing. I do hope Matt or one of the coaches takes what I wrote as constructive criticism and I hope other posters don't follow my behavior and think before posting.

You made some good points and I agree that Haas needs to be playing 25 minutes per game.

Texas, while it is true that recruiting involves projection of development and with any projection there is a significant error function in the equation, the class under discussion was a flop. That much cannot be denied.

I wasn't trying to argue with you, Arc, or in denial....just adding another supplementary perspective. No doubt that the class ended up being a rather big disappointment when all was said and done.

Possibly due to the hangover from the Johnson years it appears Smotherman's class lacks a strong work ethic except maybe for JS and we'll never know in his case. Due to the work put in last year and this year and the leadership of IH, DM, PJT, and Biggie I hope the seeds are sown for many years to come that hard work in the offseason will pay off big time in season and in future endeavors.

SI, you are probably right. There was clearly bad Chemistry and that undoubtedly had an effect upon perfromance. RJ came along at the wrong time and Purdue payed the price. He hasn't done anything elsewhere so a good bit of the blame must be placed upon him.

Spike played 15 minutes with 0 assists, 0-1 shooting, with the one steal.
Spike is the only other true point we have... who would you play at the point over him when PJ is in foul trouble? Like I said, Spike just needs to hold his own & do the little things, which he does... not to mention he has more NCAA tourney experience then anyone on the team.
