Hard to believe we were in this situation two years ago. I recall RW being announced in December and announcing his staff in January. I was hoping that CBO would announce his staff soon but realize it could take 3-4 weeks to finalize his staff.

Anyone hearing differently?

Sounds like Odom has a pretty good idea but if I was to guess I believe Odom knows who his main coaches will be by now. If any are coming from UNLV he’s giving the school respect during bowl season. Yes it would be nice to know sooner than later to help this roster going forward. Players may know but nothing public yet 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think, and hope, you are right that many UNLV coaches will follow him. It would be great for hitting the ground running.

Well good news is UNLV plays early - a week from today! I think we will see pieces come together after that. It also seems marion is being courted for other jobs including head coach at UNLV (unlikely based on AD comments) and the rumor at OK St so I suspect we’ve got a week or so for that to be sorted out. I expect defense we will know next week though, his OL coach seems decent and we need to hit portal hard there so hopefully soon for him.

The nice thing is that UNLV's bowl game is super early in the season, next Wednesday against Cal.

Retains from the current Purdue staff or brings from his UNLV staff? I haven't seen much of anything about those that were on Walters' staff. No idea if they all got canned or what not.

I would not be surprised if they were all gone. I kind of suspect that.

Edit: Of course Walters did show his chops as an OC!

I would actually be surprised if Lamar Conard isn’t retained and there is speculation he will. Some of the players including Mockobee are close with him, he is a Purdue guy, and he did pretty good with Mockobee and Tracy. He wasn’t a “walters” guy anyways.
Titles will likely change. Coaching rules change a bit next year. Plus you always have offensive analysts.

Sam carter is a possibility as he worked directly under Barry Odom at Mizzou and Arkansas for several years. He actually didn’t follow Walters to Illinois, he’s probably more Odom than Walters.

Brick Haley was also with Odom at Mizzou.

Marcus Johnson was on odoms staff for I think a year but it wasn’t a great year after he lose Heupel.

Grant OBrien is another guy that was on odoms staff but a junior level.

Justin Sinz and TJ McCollom were Brohm holdovers and obviously boilers at heart, have nothing against then if there’s a good spot for them.

Kiero Small came from Michigan who had a top notch strength and conditioning. We didn’t have much injuries this year lol so can’t complain too much.

Don’t forget we get 10 assistant coaches, 5 strength and conditioning, and 4 grad assistants plus we can have analysts who aren’t allowed to recruit but can now coach so Conard becomes valuable even if he’s not officially one of the 10 assistants. We had 8 analysts this year so 24 coaches essentially and 4 grad assistants. UNLV looks to only have 3 analysts so even if he brought over his entire team we could have 5 holdover spots left without adding new positions.

I would guess the following coaches would come that have stayed with him

DC Mike Scherer (been with him at 3 prior stops since 2019)

RB Cornell Ford (Mizzou and UNLV)

I also am hoping we can keep

OC Brennan Marion - of course

OL Vance Vice (better than what we’ve had, unless he has another guy that is better of course)

ST James Shibest - assuming we can get his PK too. I was impressed in the presser how often Odom mentioned kicking and how big of a priority it is.

Joe Dineen has posted on Twitter that he is out. No surprise but what that does tell me is it wasn’t an abrupt housecleaning.

One article said that his planned assistants were all participating in bowl games and would be announced/added after their bowl game.

To me that means he’s not going to retain any Purdue coaches.

Several other articles pointed out one of the biggest issues at Purdue this year was that none of their coaches communicated very well with Walters or anyone else on the staff. I don’t think I would want to bring any of them back especially the strength and conditioning coach and whoever was responsible for developing athletes. I have witnessed zero development of any player on this team. Qb Card was a lot better qb before he came to Purdue! Yanni definitely digressed.

Was that article written by the Marquette beat writer?

How about you listen to the words out of the man’s mouth where he said “some of the coaches”, not all of them. And he also said some of the coaches will be coming from the outside. Honestly I don’t think Odom had made up his mind and he still may not have. I am confident Purdue will have a larger coaching staff than UNLV did. I would be surprised if they didn’t keep anyone but I’d put money on conard staying.

Watched Deinhart on YT and he also says Conard and Sinz possibly will be retained, and very confident strength coach is staying.

Speaking of bowls, I am wondering if they will just start phasing out most of the smaller bowls. The only thing most people will even care about now is the CFP. Other bowls outside of the CFP are almost like the NIT in basketball.
I think some of the other more notable bowls could become sites for the CFP. But yeah, if you're not in the CFP who really cares?

Sounds like some of the existing staff will stay around, which will help with continuity and retainment of existing players. It will no doubt be an exciting time for the Purdue family as the new staff is assembled.

He has stated that as his choices were still involved in post-season play, he wouldn't announce them until their season ended. So hopefully we will be getting competent people and not rejects.
So not bringing his whole staff? And has some Unlv flips but no massive group of transfers ready to announce to Purdue just yet? Correct?

David Blough passed for 572 yards against Mizzou in 2018, so CBO knows who he is.

Since then, he has played under two advanced offensive coaches, Brohm and Kingsbury in the NFL, and now coaches under the latter. He is smart, personable, and ready to be our OC.

This is crazy. He’s an NFL assistant position coach. I wouldn’t hate them having a spot for him but QB coach and assistant to the HC with an opportunity to learn seems more justified.

He also expected Sherer and Ford to follow CBO and to watch for Vice and Shibest.

He did think we will hear a lot more this week.

That's old school thinking. Look at all the experienced OCs who have done a mediocre or bad job.

Blough was one of the smartest guys to play for Purdue, and he played for two of the most advanced offensive coaches. And, he would be great at recruiting.

Agreed. Maybe somewhere down the line but this would be too risky.

Yeah I doubt it. After hearing Tom speak of the UNLV Qb NIL deal thing that supposedly Marion promised the kid upset Odom so that could be a deciding factor also 🤷🏼‍♂️
Yeah, I've kind of wondered if that wasn't the case too as I've heard what supposedly played out in that mess.
