🚂 Portal departure expected to return?

The calendar has turned to 2024 and Purdue's recruiting efforts are still at a rapid pace at the start of the new year. Ryan Walters and company are still looking to add to the 2024 recruiting class in the transfer portal, as well as looking toward the 2025 class. The first edition of Weekly Upload this year hits on a pair of new portal targets, a highly-touted cornerback approaching a decision and more!
The Boilermakers are set to host former Georgia wide receivers CJ Smith and De'Nylon Morrissette on visits this weekend. The duo were both four-star recruits in the class of 2022, signing with the Bulldogs and winning National Championships as true freshmen.
Smith has been the more productive of the two, catching six passes for 116 yards in 2023. Morrissette had four catches for 34 yards in 2022, but only played in three games this fall and did not record any stats. At 6'3" and 6'2", both Smith and Morrissette are bigger receivers that also have the potential to take the top off of defenses with their speed.
In a group with only one proven receiver (Jahmal Edrine, who is also coming off of a torn ACL) Purdue will be looking to add talent to the position. The two former Bulldogs would provide just that for offensive coordinator Graham Harrell.
I cannot confirm where Purdue stands in its pursuit of the former highly-touted pass catchers, but this appears to be the first visit since entering the portal for each prospect.
While he hasn't made that official, sources told Boiler Upload that Purdue remains confident in where it stacks up for the Tennessee native. A commitment isn't a lock as once expected, but expect the Boilermakers to be right there until the end.
It's worth mentioning that Grant is reportedly out of high school eligibility, per his high school coach, which could result in the talented defensive back joining the 2024 recruiting class. Regardless of which class he potentially joins, Grant will be a candidate to start from day one in West Lafayette.
Per a source, Dean is expected to withdraw from the portal and coming back to Purdue for next season and beyond. The 240-pound running back saw special teams action in the season opener, but did not play the rest of the year. Dean's return would give Lamar Conard and the Boilermakers more depth in the backfield behind Devin Mockobee and Reggie Love III in 2024.
Other top suitors for Greene include Kentucky, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, with Group of 5 schools also on his offer list. Kentucky has been pushing for Greene as hard as anybody, but Marcus Johnson and the Boilermakers have also made the 355 tackle a priority in the class.
A pair of legacy recruits Carson and
Cooper Kitchel both announced their commitments to Purdue, following in the footsteps of their father Kelly Kitchel. The twin brothers out of West Lafayette High School will head down the road for their collegiate football careers. Carson will join Graham Harrell's group, which is loosing another West Lafayette product Kyle Adamsthis off-season. Cooper will likely be a wide receiver as he was at the high school level.
The other walk-on to announce his commitment on Thursday was Elkhart, Indiana, outside linebacker/edge rusher Logan Jellison. The 6'5", 230-pound defender will be a part of Joe Dineen's group at outside linebacker with the Boilermakers.
The trio joins running back Antonio Harris and defensive back Stu Smith as the preferred walk-ons joining the program ahead of next season.

Transfer wide receivers next up on the docket?
Despite all of the transfer additions for the Boilermakers already this off-season, but Ryan Walters and company aren't done yet. After getting the offensive line revamped, next up on the check list of priorities is beefing up Hudson Card's pass catching corps. That effort is well underway as Purdue looks to add to UCLA transfer Kam Brown. The Boilermakers are set to host former Georgia wide receivers CJ Smith and De'Nylon Morrissette on visits this weekend. Tarrion Grant's decision looms large:
Earlier this week, four-star cornerback Tarrion Grant announced that he would be committing on January 14th and Purdue will be in the mix. This fall, the number 36 prospect in the 2025 recruiting class took a visit to West Lafayette and was considered a silent commit shortly thereafter. While he hasn't made that official, sources told Boiler Upload that Purdue remains confident in where it stacks up for the Tennessee native. A commitment isn't a lock as once expected, but expect the Boilermakers to be right there until the end.

A previous portal departure nearing return to West Lafayette?
Freshman running back Mondrell Dean was one of the 23 scholarship players to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal for Purdue this off-season, but a return to West Lafayette could be imminent.Per a source, Dean is expected to withdraw from the portal and coming back to Purdue for next season and beyond. The 240-pound running back saw special teams action in the season opener, but did not play the rest of the year. Dean's return would give Lamar Conard and the Boilermakers more depth in the backfield behind Devin Mockobee and Reggie Love III in 2024.
Boilers make top five for 2025 offensive lineman:
Another 2025 recruit that is a Purdue priority isn't making his decision just yet, but he is a step closer to doing so. Three-star offensive lineman Raphael Greene is slated to announce his top five later today, with the Boilermakers being a part of the list.Other top suitors for Greene include Kentucky, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, with Group of 5 schools also on his offer list. Kentucky has been pushing for Greene as hard as anybody, but Marcus Johnson and the Boilermakers have also made the 355 tackle a priority in the class.
Purdue adds trio of preferred walk-ons:
After early Signing Day last month, Purdue's 2024 recruiting class was essentially set in stone. Although, the Boilermakers are still filling out the roster with preferred walk-ons, as they will do up until the summer.A pair of legacy recruits Carson and
