Walters

Not sure where you’re getting that. Burks pff grade was ridiculously higher than the previous year and he got PAID by Oklahoma. It’s just that the previous year his grade and body of work was a joke. Sheffield got marginally better. Yaseen got better but got hurt.

This year you have a true freshman, an Indy guy with no burst and a Georgia transfer who played very few snaps at a low low grade for Georgia (morrisette). But the OC was fired and I agree .. so what are you on?

It doesn’t mean that that level of player was going to work miracles under creighton

PFF...LOL.

Again, is it exact? No. But what do you think the odds are when you go up 20 on pff you really got worse and you’re actually oj ross

I'm not really sure why you keep bringing up Burks. If Walters and Purdue wanted to keep Burks and pay him, we would've. The fact of the matter is Burks wasn't worth paying. He has a whopping 200 yards at Oklahoma and hasn't done shit against good competition.

You said two years in a row the receivers didn’t get better. They did last year. The year before chuck jones caught everything and everyone else was no good.

And just so we are clear, you cried a lot when brohm was coach too no?

LOL, nobody got better last year. PFF doesn't show Burks leading the Big Ten in dropped passes, does it?

Did I ask you if he was getting a million?

If you want to keep a Rondale Moore going forward, that is at least what it will cost though. Scourton was due to get 400 here and left for double that. He’s no rondale.
Perhaps we should have given him the 800k

Tom said as much. His conversation with Brian was revealing last Saturday

Brian “like what transfers are actually good”

Tom (looking and sounding like he wants to name a bunch of guys) “pretty much just Reggie love Brian”

Awkward pause

“You know Brian they should have just paid Scourton and Burks their quote.”

But then there a bunch of other guys who wouldn’t be here

Almost none. The guys who are going to run alongside Jenkins meet the Oregon state pitchman at the ball and bury him out of bounds for a 4 yard loss cost MONEY. Purdue is recruiting guys who want an opportunity in the portal.

If Jenkins had been somewhere else and ended up here that would have been a lower level guy you actually buy.

People think if Walters is fired this isn’t still going to be a problem under Chris creighton. It is

Broken record.

There are plenty of guys who can cover an option play that don’t cost 500k. It helps if the scheme s put them in the right place to make a play. We currently crash 5-6 in the middle and leave the edges wide open to be exploited. Then expect a FS to run halfway across the field to tackle a guy 15-30 yards down field.

What kind of scheme is that?

You could have the fastest player on the field but in the 5-1-5 we are playing we don’t have anybody even thinking to contain an outside run…none the less the 2 you need to defend the option. That’s not the players. That’s incorrect scheming that’s being exposed and never adjusted to.

But I never thought Walters was great. Regardless of who the hire was I was going to be in their corner because it’s just not currently a desirable job. Once pay for play ramped up, Purdue was going to be hiring amongst a low low pool until revenue sharing kicked in.

I never thought about Walters the way wole thought about the mad hatter coming here instead of brohm.

Walters has coached like a guy who is on his way to being fired and I can’t figure out if Harrell was actually worse than Diaco and hazell, or just tied.

That still doesn’t mean that a safe hire who was highly likely to be better than Walters, just without the upside, wasn’t going to have big big problems due to brohm not recruiting his last 3 years.

If Walters is fired and the Toledo coach is hired for example… that coach will STILL have problems next year due to brohm. His high school senior class will basically be Devin Mockobee, max Klare and who else? So, pretend we hire a guy you three really like. Brohm will have made it harder on that guy too. Get it?
Sorry. But if we hire a guy that has problems next year because of BROHM then we hired the wrong guy again.

Any idea when you'll quit using that as an excuse? Will you still be singing that in 2028?

Problems because there are going to be two home grown seniors who can play?

That’s totally incorrect and a fallacy many Purdue fans but into. If you’re a buyer in the portal, sure. Purdue is not a buyer.

Brian pressed Tom in the simulcast “which one of these transfers is actually good.” Tom admitted pretty much just Reggie love.

Purdue lost Scourton and if Thienemann wasn’t a legacy and didn’t have any particular allegiance to Purdue, I doubt they’d have afforded him.

A really high impact player is going to cost you about 500-750. That will get you a guy at yannis position that would have run down that Oregon state option and dumped the pitch man out of bounds for a 4 yard loss.

Purdue ain’t getting players like that man. They were able to keep 4 of 5.
I’ll offer you a different take and one no other poster has offered.

We know Purdue doesn’t give out much NIL. We know some players left Purdue because they found better financial offers elsewhere. That’s a given.

Two questions. First, could have matched the NIL offer of the player who left? Or did they decide to give that NIL money to someone else? If was someone else, then you can’t be upset. Purdue had a decision to make with limited funds and they chose to spend it on someone else and that player stayed. You should be happy the other player stayed.

My other thought is if Purdue had a winning year last year and was projected to have a winning year this year, the players who left would probably have stayed for less money. Instead what they saw was the titanic sinking. And they jumped off and took the best offer they could find. And now that the titanic is sinking you are not going to find anybody willing to take any amount of money to climb aboard

After this year, you will see a lot more players leaving and more elite recruits decommiting.

With the addition of the 4 power house additions, Purdue will soon become a cellar dweller.

And how will Purdue ever recover? They will have to become like Colorado. And sell their soul to a snake oil salesman like Neon Deion. And he will bring his team and recruits with him.

The question to ask is would Purdue do something like this? And hire someone like Pitino or Calipari or Neon Dione? Or would they keep their ethics and moral standards And accept being a celler dweller?

Ok I will ask the question no one has answered.

I believe We all will agree. That Walters had success in recruiting some very good defensive backs to Purdue primarily based on his success at Illinois.

A lot of people here believe Brohm quit on Purdue and knew what the future was going to look like And bailed on Purdue and took the first train out of dodge he could find.

My question to you: What if Brohm had stayed at Purdue?

Would the receivers. Have stayed?
Would Brohm recruit some decent DBs?

Would Purdue’s fortunes be any better today if Brohm had stayed?

They split Scourtons money and got a bunch of guys. If you look at just the pff of Jenkins, Hartwig, Mbow, Thienemann, you can see that they likely all got offered Scourton’s initial offer, about 400. And you know all those players so you know how we think of them is in line with their high pff

When you look at the guys we got, no one has pffs that high. Then you go read premium boards (you can do that on rivals for an extra $7/month) and you realize very few of these guys were missed. One was called “invisible when he wasn’t hurt.” He’s been invisible in the snaps he’s had while Jenkins has been at at MLB.

Purdue is not spending 400k to go get MORE guys like Hartwig and Jenkins. Those kinda players could be in yanni’s spot and suddenly come flying into your tv screen to meet the Oregon state pitch man at the ball.

Of all the transfers we ever got, none of the reactions were like “oh man we lost a good one.” The best was that Texas fans really wanted the best for card, but acknowledged that he wasn’t going to play there.

Contrast indiana. Forget the JMU transfers. They got a RB who has graded in the mid 70s on 350~ snaps at wake forest for the last 3 years. Purdue has rarely got guys who rated in the low 70s on half those snaps for one year. The only player who ever graded as high as the Indiana transfer is Nyland Green. For one season on 90 snaps.

Indiana got a DT from Kent state who graded 87 on starter snaps! Our best g5 transfer ever was 77; Wingfield.

Word is the IU alum gave their AD tens of millions and told him to do what needed to be done.

If Purdue alum don’t do similarly, football will crash, Purdue will be told to take a smaller tv share and the shark schools will come for our basketball players at some point.

There's this thing called the portal............
Purdue isn’t a buyer. Jenkins got 400~ to stay here and Scourton was offered the same.

Purdue isn’t buying players like that in the portal. They won’t under the next coach either. And that will restrict who will take the job.

Purdue has brought in a lot of guys who have played minimal snaps at schools like Georgia and are looking for an opportunity. Likely for a quarter of what Jenkins got, if that.

If Nyland Green was known as a playmaker in Georgia, but they truly just couldn’t play him more than 90 snaps because they are so loaded, he would have cost a lot more. Money Purdue doesn’t pay. He wasn’t known as a playmaker in Georgia. Their fans thought of him as JAG. Both before and after the transfer announcement

Yes. IU donors supposedly gave the AD tens of millions to “do what needs to be done.”

See, that’s this Purdue mentality. “No. You get nothing. Now go miracle me a result like Joe Tiller.” Forgetting of course that the schedules were a joke when tiller won here.

Cornett is not a miracle man either. Sure he brought a lot of guys from JMU who fit the whole TJ McCollum mold. But justice Ellison and CJ west cost MONEY. You think Rourke was free? He gets the ball out lightning quick compared to card.

Here are their grades so far this season

Ellison 114 snaps 88.3
Rourke 301 snaps 86.7
West 117 snaps 79.2

Those grades (the first two) are karlaftis Oconnell like grades. They won’t stay that high. However, none of them was awful against UCLA and Maryland

Illinois has an NFL owner as an alum. What do you think the chances are that, like Purdue’s richest alum, he doesn’t care about sports? they didn’t lose anyone like Scourton or Burks. Inbound transfers are less important there with Bert having been there so long

A 500 yard RB from Vandy doesn’t cost money. At least not a sum of money we couldn’t afford.

You’re too tied up in NIL and not concerned enough with competent coaching. It takes both.

Again, you’re so dogmatic it’s hilarious. Me saying that Purdue isn’t committed has to be me saying that Walters has been a good coach lol.

You’re dumb enough to think I think coaching is competent when I was for the Harrell firing?

Don't need to bring in half million dollar players to be much better than we are. If Walters needs a team of All Americans to win then he ain't the guy. Let's start by demonstrating competency with what we have and then we can have the conversation on NIL. It's a ridiculous excuse with the way we play.

And Purdue will be bled by it. Can’t compete with cast offs.
With this coach we can't compete anyway. Get a competent coach then worry about NIL. I'm going to hazard a guess that NIU has less NIL than we do but has managed to put a far better team on the field.

I know a lot of people on here compare Walters to Hazell, which is justified given the record and performance to date. With that said, I find Coach Walters infinitely more likable, humble, and someone that I genuinely want to do well here.

I abandoned Hazell about 3 games into his tenure, but if Walters can hold this team and his recruiting class together after the abysmal start to this season, I think he deserves our support. His defense is showing clear improvement and he is now making obvious effort to repair the inept offense that has held him back since he got here. He also appears to be more disappointed than any of us with the results on the field, which tells me he cares about what is happening here vs. just cashing a check.

So far, I think his biggest mistake has been in trusting the wrong person with his Offense whilst having an unforgiving schedule. Although obvious self-preservation, I think pulling the trigger on Harrell is more than just a symbolic act and and actually gives Walters a chance to rebound. Hopefully he course corrected before it's too late.

Boiler up!
I really wanted this to work but Walters had no chance out of the gate. That is fully on Bobo for hiring a DC with no head coaching experience and no staff. Basically Walters was F’ed coming in.

The honest truth on where we are is that our defense isn’t stopping anyone and our offense is marginally better with basically a HS coach calling plays. Bobo should make a change at the end of the year but I doubt he does and we will be in the gutter for another year.

Anyone remember the hype of bringing back the den?

Correction. Purdue football has crashed. We hired a defense specialist (self proclaimed best) whose defense is giving up 500 yds a game. We haven’t even played the best yet.

Bobo needs to be left in Madison and told not to come back to WL.

Walters was hired quick because he supposedly had other offers. And BoBo made the offer before Walters would receive any other offers to consider.

What is concerning is that when hope was fired, Morgan had a list of 5 candidates to replace and he had a-verbal agreement with the coach form NIU to replace him. But he decided to go to NC state instead.

What troubles me is BOBO knew of Brohm’s desire to return to Louisville. And yet there were no reports that he maintained any list or gave any thought for his replacement.

A thought/question that comes to mind. Is it possible that BOBO thought he had a done deal with one of Brohm’s assistants to replace him. Such as the younger Brohm? And that deal fell through?

I was reading an article about KY football today and seems Stoops’ seat is getting a little warm. The article listed possible replacements if he’s shown the door. Among them was Gary Patterson formerly of TCU who stepped away a couple of years ago. He brought them to Purdue a couple years ago for a W. I think we all know how cut throat football can be in TX. They used the term ‘step away’ and not ‘retired’. 64 years old. Too old for a new gig? Ran a solid program and might be able to recruit TX somewhat.

Anyone know more about him and would he be a good fit at Ross Ade?

I’d take him

Was never a great outward recruiter…never had the best classes or stars but always had dudes who could play.

I think he left due to the NIL emergence. If he doesn’t want to play that game (and I don’t blame him for not) he’s not going to be successful anywhere again.
