It wouldn't surprise me, let's see if Illinois doesn't let him sign with any B1G Schools, it will interesting, I like Zo, but won't he be recruiting the same type players as Painter does?Asked for his release. Zo going to get this one also?
That's what I was afraid of, really like Cuonzo, just wish we didn't have too bump heads with him, already tough enough with recruiting against the B1G, Butler, Xavier, Cincy, ND?, and a bunch more.....oh well, let it ripHave a feeling we will be competing a lot for the same recruits...we may start liking Zo less and less around here if that's the case.
my "guess" is that it will be similar to Knight and his pervious assistants. People will visit both and both coaches will build up each other as the second best choice due to whatever circumstance that can be soldAsked for his release. Zo going to get this one also?

He didn't compete with Painter at UT?
See this is a key point. Some on here think that we should just have our pick of whomever we want but the reality is, we have a lot of competition around us for similar recruits. It isn't nearly as simple as some would make it when so many schools are in proximity to us and 'loyalty' or whatever you want to call it is non-existent anymore.I would say MSU, X, Butler and Michigan would be interested in the same type of guys we are as they run similar offenses and are geographically close. One could throw iu & IL into that mix as well now that they have a decent coaches....it is likely with the geographical proximity we will bump heads there too.
I think the biggest key to kids going to different schools is the TV networks. Any kid can play anywhere almost and his family can watch. The days of picking a school within two hours from home are pretty much done.See this is a key point. The kid is going to go wherever he wants and just because Painter doesn't get one player or the other doesn't make him a bad recruiter, it just means the kid chose somewhere else.
Another great point. As you pointed out, it used to be beneficial to go to a certain school just to be on TV, that simply isn't the case anymore as every game out there can be viewed to one extent or another it seems.I think the biggest key to kids going to different schools is the TV networks. Martin also has Porter & Roberts.Illini fan here. we had a mini meltdown over this on our message board lol (not as bad as losing Eric Gordon but we should be used to it by now) . Tilmon is most likely headed to play for Cuonzo at Misery . Which sucks because they are also probably gonna get Mark Smith (Mr Basketball of Illinois) .
That and when they decide to go play somewhere several states away they are no longer leaving everyone behind now that everyone has a cell phone and social networking. Not only can your girlfriend from high school still watch you play from several states away, she can send you a text message to congratulate you before you even get done showering and perhaps a Snapchat as well if you really had a good game that night.

And I thought Porter Roberts ran out of eligibility in the 90's.Martin also has Porter & Roberts.
I heard a rumor that Michigan State boosters are already standing in line for the opportunity to drive Porter's and Roberts' mothers to Missouri home games. And I thought Porter Roberts ran out of eligibility in the 90's.
There are interwebs rumblings that Zo has had contact with Tillmon already (he was at his HS??). If so, that's a violation. I just hope Zo keeps everything on the up and up. He will be closely scrutinized if he manages to pull this class out of thin air.if that works out..... that is just an amazing class. Of the three Smith is a guy I wish we were after.
ZO can just get it done pn the recruiting trail...so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't land a good class, but the class you mention is phenomenal.

good one, I cracked up when I saw the names of Mizzou's recruits after Zo was named the coach there.I heard a rumor that Michigan State boosters are already standing in line for the opportunity to drive Porter's and Roberts' mothers to Missouri home games.
It's a catch 22. You want to get the best talent you can and as you said Painter is often ahead of most coaches in regards to evaluating players, but going after that talent means there are risks. Which is why CMP has to have several 'backup plans' in regards to recruits.I think what makes us fans more frustrated is actually one of Painter's best assets as a head coach: his ability to spot high level or elite talent very early on in players before they begin to get recognition or that may have slipped through the cracks (Mathias and Carsen Edwards for example). The issue is that Painter focusing on these players allows us as fans to get our hopes up, then they begin their upswing through the rankings. We as fans get our hopes up and then ultimately the kid may choose another school. It happens to every school but when Painter's biggest strength is sometimes the most crucial aspect to his success...but also the most likely to end poorly and out of his control, it can be frustrating.
It does seem, not saying it's fact, but some coaches almost use Painter to find the talent. At that point, they swoop in and get the commitment. There have been many players that we have been the first to come in and recruit or even offer, then next thing you know the blue bloods swoop in. I don't know how much this is just in my mind or fact, but it does seem to happen a lot. It's a catch 22. He was really early on Derek Willis and the other Kentucky kid that played for Quick Rick.Very few is he the first offer. I can't think of any right now. Perhaps you can list a guy or two. Not doubting you I just can't remember any where Painter was a kids first offer.
I know lately in the last 4-5 years he switched his mode where he just IDs talent and offers later....so it would have to be pre 2011 I would imagine.
I can't think of any particular incidents, it just seemed like there were some kids where smaller schools had offered and we were the first major D1 school to offer. I guess these are more particularly the incidents I am talking about. I do agree that Willis is one that could be used as an example.Very few is he the first offer. I can't think of any right now. Yeah, the little point guard that I can't remember his nameHe was really early on Derek Willis and the other Kentucky kid that played for Quick Rick.
I was thinking of the forward that was a really good rebounder...Yeah, the little point guard that I can't remember his name

Purdue may have recruited him ...I don't know. I do know Matt really wanted Ullis thoughI was thinking of Chane Behanan.
I have complete confidence Izzo will start crying at some point. Whether he closes the deal or not, who knows.Mark Smith is on an official visit with his parents this weekend at MSU. I have complete confidence Izzo will close the deal.

thanks...my thoughts were off. I knew when he was a soph or junior Purdue had him in mind, but didn't know others had a head startPainter was late on Ullis. I posted an article about him before Painter ever went and looked. At the time of that posting several schools were involved.
On Chane Behanan other schools were involved.
Willis is a good example though I think.
