Throw some names for coaches next year….

so intelligent beings who know everything and love to call others names, who pays the coach's salary ? and Hazell's salary ? and the assistant coach's salary ? and the expected NIL payments that will be required ? you can't just hire a new coach because you want to.

some food for thought. https://www.indystar.com/story/spor...ut-if-fired-in-2024-boilermakers/75548858007/
Ive read this dickbrains. That’s how I know it’s not a lump sum payout.

I’m gunna call you names til you relocate to the IU board. Or whatever fan base might actually appreciate the mindless drivel.

There’s about 40mil in season ticket revenue at stake next year. How much of that doesn’t renew if Walters is still coach. Half? That’s $20mil down the toilet…and we can’t afford to pay $3.3mil a year for a buyout? Cmon.

Let’s try actually knowing what we are talking about for once! I know that would be a totally new concept for you though.

As Doug pointed out on Twitter, next year’s schedule is maybe even worse - “Lots has been made of '24 schedule for #Boilermaker fball & rightfully so, but look at next yrs slate. Road games vs. ND, Mich & Wash. Home vs. Ohio St & USC, not to mention Ill. & IU et al. Only W vs. FCS school & that's probably it. Obvious decision that has to be made”.

Even a new head coach is likely to only have 1-or-2 wins, especially if they’re trying to change schemes. Not sure who’ll want to come here knowing they’ll potentially find themselves in the same position at Walters…

There’s a difference between rebuilding and incompetence.

We are so bad and poorly coached you can’t even tell if we have talent.

I think going back to being fundamentally sound and well schemed will do wonders and make us look more talented than we actually are! I agree though, tough road to go for anybody who comes in. Especially with what the current coach has done to us!

When talking salary, you need to add the buyout to that salary because that’s going to have to be an expense paid this year or next unless they settle it with deferred payments. If that happens you are looking at paying two contracts.

To make you and other fans happy by buying out Walters and hiring someone new that also wants a nice paycheck, I will ask, where is that money going to come from? Our Nil collective?
You don’t understand business 101. Do you know what a return on investment is? Purdue is bleeding cash and losing out on revenue. It would be a big investment to buy out Walter and hire an elite coach, but the return would likely outweigh the cost. If you know you are in a lose lose situation you need to bite the bullet and right the ship.

If FSU fires Norvell, I'd give him a serious, serious look.
Yeh, he'd cost big $, but $ shouldn't be an issue for Purdue if it wants to complete.

I’m not fully against it but he also swung and missed pretty hard on a QB and in the portal this year. Sounds a bit familiar to what we are seeing right now.

I don’t think he’d take the job either…but this is likely the level where he’d find the most success and have leeway for the ups and downs.

I’m ok with a rough year or two under a new coach IF the team shows improvement, is at least competitive and the players don’t roll like a whipped pup and quit on the field like they are now.

Chesney...14 yrs coaching experience...only making 550 k a yr...2nd time watching Jmu play ...innovative offense...Jmu ain't skipping a beat with Cignetti gone. Been a winner every where he's coached.

We need to land a tier 1 coach fast with that type of schedule.

Brent Vigen - HC Montana State. Longtime offensive coordinator for Craig Bohl at NDSU & WYO. Current salary around 215k.

Haven't read up too much on him yet but this is the type of name we could expect I think. Hiring someone directly from FCS is a little bit of extra risk because I don't think they would have much experience with NIL and the portal. This guy seems to have played/coached entirely in the Wyoming/Montana/North Dakota area of the country so you'd also wonder about recruiting ties to the Midwest.

Why don't you think he'd take the job? Do you think he'd be in line for a bigger job? Purdue would be a great place to get reestablished as a younger coach, then he'd probably move back up to a top tier SEC program.

That's the thing. If the team is improving and competing for 4 quarters, but this team seems to quit once they get in a hole. Then they completely roll over and get embarrassed.
If we were losing games 35-28 and at least in it in the 4th quarter, that's different than 3 of our 4 real games being over at halftime.

I don't want a coach from some school I've never heard of, who's never had to compete in recruiting battles with other P5 programs. Yeh, I know Tiller came from Wyoming, which fits those criteria, but that was also over 25 years ago.
And, I don't think recruiting ties to the MW are critical. I'd rather have them recruiting athletes from FL, GA and TX.

He’s getting paid regardless…why coach for free and take on a massive rebuild?

I also like what IU is doing with Cignetti. An older guy who’s likely not going to move on…especially with what BIG schools can now pay salary wise. I think we should offer an established guy $6-7mil. More if he wins. Not many schools going to be able to outbid us.

Norvell is young. A program like Purdue might be the best option: Big program, big resources, tough conference, manageable expectations.
But, if he can rebuild Purdue, while still making $6-8M, then he would be in line for an even bigger payday if he left.

I’d choose to not rebuild Purdue for the same money I could sit at home for a year with, grab an analyst job at Alabama or UGa or a top 10 program for a year or two and then be their OC 3-4 years from now.

Dudes making 9mil a year for the next 7 years. I’m not sure why he’d take on a rebuild for less.

Many more HC openings coming by year end. We will have to compete against many others with more money and alure. We are no different than IU was last year. Grab an up and comer and hope to strike lightning in a bottle. On another note, let's see how Cignetti does against the top teams in the league.

Your opinion is noted.

If he loses out, which he won't, he's still taking IU to a bowl game in his first season. I don't think anyone was questioning if he could win the Big Ten or take his team to the playoffs. The whole lets-see-if-he-can-beat-Ohio-State-before-we-can-accept-hes-any-good stuff is moving the goalposts and sounds like sour grapes to me.

Candle would be a strong candidate but he's been at Toledo since 2009 in some coaching capacity....head coach since 2016... so he may not be motivated by just chasing the biggest paycheck possible and 1.1 million to coach at Toledo as long as you want doesn't seem like a bad gig. He's worth kicking the tires on but I wouldn't count on landing him.
But that's kind of the thing. He's making decent money now and if he has aspirations of bigger things, you might be better off staying put until someone bigger comes knocking. If you take a job at the Purdue level, you almost have to be sure that is where you want to be and stay long term because it's incredibly difficult to have the kind of season that would make you a target of top programs.

If Washington was in the BIG last year, I doubt DeBoer has the season he did that he parlayed into the Alabama job.
