Thoughts on the new UNI'S

Agree. Definitely an upgrade. Whatever it takes to get decent recruits' attention. I really like the two-tone grey, but I am sure I'm im the minority.

I think they're OK but the turtleneck loses some of it's flashiness because the helmet gets in the way.

.............I likey! Pretty cool!

Could the numbers be any bigger on the jersey? Don't need to worry about wearing your contacts to games...

I don't care for numbers on the helmet - it's relatively pointless and gives no identity.

Overall, these are mostly just updates Nike is making to their uniforms (you'll see a lot of the same "updates" with other teams)...these aren't necessarily unique. I'm glad we won't have the all black - wasn't too big of a fan of that. The black/gold still looks the sharpest.

Uniforms won't make a lick of difference for this program right now.

I didn't see the gold pants but I'm hoping that they are more of a true old gold like Army has. I am a fan of the black top and gold pants and the all white. Grey is blah and about 10 years too late to be unique. I'd rather see something totally off the wall and go solid gold for a schtick/promo game.

Oregon rejects? I totally agree with the "It's whats inside that counts."
Only on here would people bitch about admin not moving the program forward and then we try and make a move to move the program at least from an image standpoint and then get criticized?

Pboiler18...here is a queston for you: Do you like all the ND configurations including the gold shoes they now wear? Football players make their statements on the field during games, not posing in uniforms.

I guess I am of the PSU persuasion on uniforms.

You cited 2 of the top 10 uniform traditions out there. We aren't on that level. Of course winning is of paramount concern. The image of the program is still important thought and this goes a long way.

Looking like Oregon at this point is probably a lot better than NOT. I think our last uniform design we had for the past 5-6 years didn't really do us any favors image wise but neither did our play.

PSU can get away with plain uniforms because that's their brand. ND wears blue and gold because that's their brand. At this point, the only winning images we have are the Griesie, Brees and Orton years jerseys and all of those are outdated and would only be solid throwbacks and shouldn't be our every game uniforms.

We should probably strap on some leather helmets too.

You do realize that some of the recruits parents might not even remember these jerseys?

It's ok for the image of a program to evolve. I'd rather continuously redesign uniforms while the team gets better to find the winning image than be stuck in the 60s with our image and not have one when the program gets better. While the blue bloods generally keep their uniforms pretty steady, we are now wearing the same shell design that OSU, Oregon, Clemson, MSU, Oklahoma, FSU and Alabama wore in their championship playoff appearances. That's not a bad start, to be considered worthy of that treatment from Nike.

I think he was referencing the fact that the gold being used was actually Old Gold and distinguished Purdue from other teams of black and gold. The first issue at hand is correcting the problem of branding a certain color of gold for EVERYTHING imo. For instance, do you ever see anything different than the shades of orange and blue when it comes to Illinois? The first step in the uniform issue has got to be correcting the color schemes (hell, the gold on the helmet looks different from the color of the pants honestly. Army gets a darker shade of gold so you can't tell me Purdue couldn't work out an agreement to get a corrected color...at least share what Army has.

THis isn't really a program moving forward - this is a standard Nike update. You'll find a dozen of other football programs with our exact uniforms, just different colors and logo patches.

Nike is as cookie cutter as they come. And all of the others are too - they're the same uniforms just different colors/patterns for the most part.

As for uniforms, the "uniform craze" that actually mattered ended years ago. Football uniforms have become mass produced and even small non-impactful schools have multiple uniform combos. What Purdue is doing is not unique at all and there are hardly any schools out there that are.

And quite frankly, the uniforms that Purdue has tried to pull off - have for the most part been flops. That hideous neon green they trot out don't help.

Does your retirement home even get the BTN or do you just catch the pictures in the paper?

Unfortunately, Purdue doesn't have a lot of sway and power with Nike as they don't move the needle much. There are 8 schools that are Nike schools in the B1G.
Penn State
OSU
Minnesota
MSU
Iowa
Illinois
Rutgers
Purdue

Of these schools, Purdue probably sells the least amount of gear and makes Nike the least amount of money. Nike has little interest in helping Purdue out when Purdue can't get out of their own way, in terms of branding.

Other notable schools under Nike:
Alabama, Baylor, Arizona, Boise State, BYU, Clemson, Oregon, Florida, FSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Okie State, Oklahoma, LSU, Stanford, TCU, Tennessee, USC, Virginia Tech, West Virginia

So in terms of pecking order, you could make a clear case that Purdue stands 30th - 35tth in line in a total of 91 total colleges sponsored by Nike. You could make other cases for schools like Army, Air Force, and a few other schools being ahead of Purdue as well. If those in contact with Nike were smart, they would go to Nike and discuss the uniqueness of the school with its aeronautics and the engineering along with the only school that has a train as a logo to generate some unique aspect of the uniforms....but alas that would seem to take someone outside of those being paid to come up with.
