I see a lot of threads (usually during every game during league play) about "Where's Bryson?", "Thompson's terrible, Bryson needs to play".

And I was on the fence about this, then the announcer made a comment that Thompson's assist to turnover ratio is 2:1. So I went and looked.

Octeus: 28.2 min/g; 9.2ppg; 2.5 assists/g; 1.2turnovers per game

So, on a per minute basis, Octeus averages .33points, .088 assists, .042 turnovers
Assist to Turnover Ratio just a little over 2:1

Thompson: 15 min/g; 2.4ppg; 1.2 assists/g; 0.6 turnovers/g

Per Minute Basis, Thompson averages .16points, .08 assists, .04 turnovers
Assist to Turnover Ratio 2:1

Scott: 10.9 min/g; 4.3ppg; 1.3 assists/g; 1.1 turnovers/g

Per Minute Basis, Scott averages .39points, .11 assists, .10 turnovers
Assist to Turnover Ratio, almost 1:1

So what does it mean? It depends on what you want out of your point guard. Statistically Thompson is just as good as an option as Octeus is as a ball handler. But he lacks scoring. So if you want your PG to be putting the ball in the basket then Thompson isn't your guy. I don't think that's what Painter wants on this team. He wants a PG that will run the offense, protect the ball, and score within the flow of the game. That's why Thompson is playing behind Octeus right now. He isn't forcing shots, and he protects the ball.

Scott, even though he is our best per minute scorer he doesn't always do it within the flow of the offense, and even though he has the best per minute assist #s he kills himself with his turnovers.

After really looking at the numbers, I'm clearly on board with why Painter has the rotation the way he does. And this doesn't take into accoutn what Bryson may or may not be doing in the practice. That's just rumors. But his on the floor production isn't what Painter once from his PG play for this team.

As long as Thompson continues to distribute the ball as well as Octeus, and limits his turnovers as well as Octeus ... he will be Octeus's back up. Even if he isn't as much as an offensive or defensive threat.
