Those thinking Young’s stats outlandish might be surprised to know they are quite modest when compared to three amazing scorers of the late1960’s: Pete Maravich, Calvin Murphy and our own Rick Mount.

Who scored the most points a game? Maravich at 44.2 in 83 games, Murphy at 34.7 in 77 games, Mount at 32.3 in 72 games and Trae Young as a work in progress at 30.5 in 18 games.

Who averaged the most shots a game: Maravich at 38, Murphy at 28, Mount at 26 and Young at 20.6 a game

Who had the highest FG%? Mount at 483; Young at .443; Maravich and Murphy tied at .438.

Best FT%? Murphy at .849; Mount at .843; Young at .836 and Maravich at .775.

Most Assists? No stats for Mount or Murphy. Young at 9.7 per game and Maravich at 5.1.

No stats were kept for steals, blocks, turnovers.

Critics of Young might not like what they are seeing, but he compares favorably with three of the all time great NCAA scorers.

Now let’s compare with the player considered to be the greatest all around guard of to first 75 years of college basketball. The amazing Oscar Robertson:

Robertson played in 88 games averaging 39 minutes a game. He averaged 33.8 points, 7.1 assists and 15.2 rebounds as a guard. He shot .535 from the field, 78% from the free throw line. He averaged 22 shots a game.

Note that Robertson, Maravich, Mount and Murphy played before the three point shot.
