I think it is just an awful metric. I would rather see SOW (Strength of Wins) or something similar. MSU lost to Kansas, Duke & Notre Dame and those three losses probably benefited MSU's RPI more than Purdue's 3 wins versus Missouri, BYU and NC State. I am fairly certain Purdue couldn't pick up the phone and schedule Kansas and Duke on an annual basis.
All I hear about Purdue's resume is the bad losses to Gardner Webb and North Florida (which they were), but Michigan State lost to Texas Southern (RPI: 150) at home and it seems to be forgiven because of their schedule. Purdue is a game back of MSU in W/L's yet MSU has an RPI of 27 and Purdue is 63.
Tell me what is MSU's marquee non-conference win? Marquette (RPI: 147)
