So who is leaving?

Waddell, Berg, Furst and let Loyer test the NIL waters. People are going to say not Loyer, but he hasn't grown defensively, he can't create his own shot and isn't a strong enough rebounder. Let the young guys grow under Smith's leadership, grab a big scoring guard in the portal along with a rim protector and this team would be ok.

If, Fletch stays the more power to him. But let hm earn his keep. It would force Cam and Myles to get better as well.
Loyer is one of the best shooters in the country and next year will push for being THE best shooter in the country. W need to run action for him and get him 6-8 3s a game.

I get the concerns and it could backfire. I just feel he's pretty close to the same player we recruited and hasn't changed much in his game to get better. Plus, I see Harris could fill his void if he left.

Shooting is always a plus, but right now we need scorers and that's limiting our success. We just don't have enough of them to go out and get us points.

I get your points.

PPG, 3P%, 3PM for Frosh, soph and junior year for fletch.

Improved every year.

% wise he is currently 4th in the country on 150 attempts. You sure you are good with him to leave? Cuz I certainly am not.

Obviously I don't think he should be let go.
But I do think the he's starting no matter what role hasn't necessarily helped him have a sense of urgency to improve his liabilities.

Yes, he's a great shooter. He still needs to play way better defense. He still needs to not disappear on offense for long stretches in games. He needs to stop those drives to the basket that end up with him flailing to draw a foul. He needs to stop with the flopping.

But given he's one of only two consistent outside shooters on the team, you need him to
be successful next season. But he needs to do more than shoot.
We need to get him shots though. We don’t don’t manufacture ANYTHING for him. Run the kid off double, triple screens. WHY DO WE NOT GET HIM OPEN SHOTS ON PURPOSE

I see Burgess likely leaving along with Berg, think 1 of Heide, Colvin, Cox, Harris go as well, nature of the beast these days. Ideally, I hope all 4 of the last players stay, just think Matt is going to bring in a couple portal players and someone might see a lack of playing time their reason. I do think TKR, Fletcher, Smith all return and flourish next year, would like for Loyer to be the 4th option though, in this scenario he’d get a ton of open looks, many times he seems to stand around too much and doesn’t shoot enough.
Why would burgess leave? What better opportunity would he have? His mins will increase next year and he will play for national championship contender. Who is going to give him more NIL money and more PT at a P5 school that’s better than Purdue?

Maybe Heide or Colvin? This offence is not suited to them. You have 3 players who shoot 80 % of the shots while the 2 other players on the floor move to the side lines to watch. It was very different with a 7ft 4 Eady in the middle then a 6ft 9 TKR, and you have Smith who drives the middle and again 2 players go out to the side lines in hopes they get the ball passed to them. I the last 5 games Colvin has shot 27 times and Heide 8 times. In high school Heide was the one who had the ball most of the time and comes to Purdue where he has to play his part in this offence of Painters. I know Heide chose Purdue but sometimes you just have to make a change, and he will be a junior so he will have 2 years left. I hope he stays but I could understand if he wanted to leave.
So who fills their roles? Cuz it’ll be the same with whomever comes in if they leave and everyone will complain if those guys don’t shoot 40% from 3 on 1-3 shots a game and don’t get 5+ rebounds a game

I believe you have to reread Painter’s comments with respect to the context of the question that was posed to him. The question was players leaving via the portal and gaining players via the portal. That should take Furst out of the discussion. Furst isn’t leaving via the portal.

Painter further said he will have his annual evaluations/talks with each player after the season. This says two things. First, he will have those talks after the season and they haven’t happened yet. It’s possible that Beth and Wadell could be encouraged to leave. But they haven’t been encouraged to leave yet.

But the biggest kicker is the report by a quasi respected source that one player went to Painter and informed him that he was planning on leaving via the portal. A player can always enter the portal and later pull their name. You saw. In the football season where many players entered the portal but their actions were not made public until after the season was completed. The football coach kept their decision private.

To me this is the most likely and believable scenario. Painter has indicated he hasn’t sat down with any player. And won’t be doing so until after the season. If a player did come to painter, it would be painter’s nature to keep their decision private issue private and not discuss it with the media. And I believe painter may have also kept it private from other players. Although it’s possible that it may have been revealed at the players only meeting.

I’ve already named my gut choices: one of Harris, Myles, cox or benter.

I will add one thought. I believe the news will come first from the player , much like Catchings, eastern and Haarms before Painter announces it or discusses it publicly.
What report? Please provide the link/source to the report that a player told painter he is leaving.

I think Painter needs to go back in time and run a lot of motion offense which opens it up for more players to score. And help side on the defense might work at times. And...here I go sinning...toss in a couple of zones.

Ok, of course why doesn't he create his own shots? Some of it is that we just dump it down yes and that's not his fault but he turns down open enough shots all the time or tries to take ill advised drives.

In an interview with 107.5 The Fan's JMV, Painter was asked about how he approaches the transfer portal situation during the offseason. He has already acknowledged that at least one player is leaving the program — though he didn't specify whether that was graduating senior Caleb Furst or someone else via transfer. It sounds like Purdue may also be looking to add someone via the portal if the fit is right.

I sure hope it's a lot more than just "may also be looking to add someone via the portal" Every other team in the country does it. We have glaring needs. Should be blatantly obvious to everybody...even CMP.

In the USC game he was very aggressive and took more shots. Michigan game, not as much as they played him tighter.

But totally agree he passes up open shots, but why not make it even easier by running him off screens instead of doing the damn weave at the top, which runs 10-12 seconds off the shot clock, only to dump it down to TKR for the last 12 and everyone stands around to watch. We don’t run action for players to cut, no screening for each other to get an open shot, no repositioning to get in a better passing angle, no back screens. Just watching.

I feel like what were missing is a big and a wing who can create. We have the big in DJ. I think folks are forgetting he played for 19U team USA and projects to be pretty damn good. Assuming he can stay healthy we should be fine there next year. If Colvin/Harris/Heide can put it together next year we should be fine there as well.

Unless we have a couple of players who are in the regular rotation leave, I dont see an impact player coming in via the portal to play behind guys. Maybe we grab a big, but I see TKR playing the 4 next year with DJ in and then sliding over to the 5 when DJs out.

Agreed but you can’t expect DJ to play more than 20-25 min, especially in his first full season. People don’t understand (not saying us here on the board or Purdue fans in general) how insane it was that edey at his size, was playing 30+ mins for two full seasons. And a lot of games he played damn near 40 and was never tired…except the NC game of course 😂 (but he was doing a lot more than usual).

So, we also need someone to back up DJ or who can start at times and go 15-25 mins to not depend 100% on DJ as a Frosh m.

The other way to get him shots is the have multiple guys who can dribble drive and get the D into rotations because guys have to help. Then it’s a matter of swinging the ball to the open man. We don’t do that. We have Smith trying to create or hunt a shot and the other 3 stand around waiting for the ball.

Other than Smith and TKR, I’d say there’s an opportunity for the right players to come in from the portal and start at the other 3 positions. Maybe not Painters style but we have big holes that could be improved.

As a starter these should pick up. I said overall. I know you love the term "shooter" but we need flat-out scorers. When we/he can't get open looks he looks like the Michigan game. If, the shooting doesn't matter he needs to excel an different parts of his game and that just hasn't changed enough.

This is my point, too. We don't need Fletch to leave. I'm sure Painter wants him to stay. No coach would voluntarily walk away from that outside shooting. Painter will live with Fletch's defense because no player is perfect.

What Purdue NEEDS is a consistent guy out there with him who can do the things Fletch can't--get to the rim and stop dribble penetration.

Maybe that player is already on the roster. Painter will probably at least look around in the portal this spring and see who's out there.

I understand what you mean and I agree. I think fletch is best suited as the 4th scoring option—where he’s not depended on to have to create his own shot all the time. But him looking like the like the Michigan game is also due to how the offense is currently run. We don’t run him off multiple screens or back screen for him or have him back cut.

Agreed. And if it’s not smith, it’s passed down to TKR and ppl stand and watch. If it’s working, it’s fine, but if we aren’t getting stops, it puts a lot of pressure on two guys to execute every time on the offensive side—typically not sustainable, unless of course, you have Zach edey haha

should be able to land the Valpo kid ( Schwieger )

I would say a very likely candidate to leave would be Benter. He played at a 2A school and now sees the competition he’s up against. Furst was a stud at a 2A school and Mr. Basketball and look how he’s struggled.

Don’t know anything about him. I live those 2 guards from USC. Big, physical, can get their own shot.
Get 1-2 of those guys and then a killer on the boards and then you’ve got another FF contender.

100% agree and fletch leaving would be bad IMO.

Let's also not forget that DJ coming back is a huge deal too and I would imagine be a starter alongside TKR, Smith and Fletch... that leaves essentially one open starting spot to be filled by Cox/Harris/someone.

I've gotten hoarse yelling "SHOOT the ball" when he doesn't

It could be a player injured early who has decided to leave and test the water.
Speaking of players potentially leaving…what happened to Burgess? I know he has struggled but we are giving minutes to Berg over him. Wondering if he would seek a new location.

Furst played at Blackhawk Christian in Ft Wayne. They are/were not your typical 2A school. They played a much different schedule than 2A schools. Furst was doing it against very good competition. I have no idea about Benter's HS competition.
