How many bigs does Painter need on the roster in today's guard oriented game?

Even after Haas leaves, with Haarms, Ewing, Wheeler and Taylor...that is alot of guys that could do the 5, if needed, since they are all 6'8" and above. (Wheeler who is listed at 6-7 is reported 6'9" now).

I bring that up because of two great guards available in Illinois....which gets me thinking. One ILL Mr. Basketball Mark Smith and the other Alonzo Verge, the Chicago Player of the year. I know Smith has drawn tremendous recruiting lately and Verge is borderline on qualifying thus does not draw the interest of Smith but this has increased recently. Both are late bloomers who were very good early, but really blossomed into very BIG senior years. Not that should be the direction to go, only because it gets me thinking about recruiting choices?

Don't blame Painter (especially with the Taylor ?*) for loading up on bigs as he has seen some of the teams he has to handle in the past and will again in the B1G, but with the success of the smaller athletic quick teams that can shoot, it is possibly worth the debate if that is the right thing to do?

My preference are alot of versatile guys 6-5 to 6-7 like Eastern, and in this case- Smith @ 6-5/6-6 PG, Smith can play the 1, 2 & the 3 which in Smith's case would give Purdue another true and versatile perimeter scorer moving forward. As I like the one big paired with 4 versatile guys who can guard and all score and defend.

(*BTW-- I think because Painter is going hard after another Big - it tells me he does not have any confidence in Taylor as a future contributor.)

I think there is a premium on quick, skilled athletic guys between 6-4 & 6-8......these skilled guys that can shoot well and have the ability to slash and score are a premium. These guys allow for switching D and still being able to defend most times.

If I was putting a team together, I would want 10 of the these guys paired with 3 centers. Of course when you find a guy like Carson Edwards who is small. but can still score and guard you take him as not all your guys will fit the perfect mold.

I imagine these guys especially the highly skilled ones are highly sought after and is why iu, MSU, and IL are hard charging right now to sign the 6-5 PG Smith.

Wheeler is a SF.[/QU Point is these 6-9 guys can play center if they had too.

I think Wheeler, Ewing, Haarms and Taylor are all listed or will be listed as forwards. But @ 6-9" + all could log minutes @ center when needed. For example Wagner and Wilson for Michigan are forwards but log alot of minutes as so called 5s.

Painter is going after another big because possibly Biggie, Haas and V. Edwards could go Pro.

If that happens that leaves Ewing at the 4 and Taylor and Haarms at the 5.

Obviously I think just Biggie goes Pro.....thus we have depth next year at 4 and 5 spot in Edwards, Taylor, Ewing, Haarms and Haas.

Besides Biggie, Haas has the potential to go but I feel he stays thus the scholarship for 2017 is held and goes to a 2018 big named Adam Trapp or Trevion Williams, but if Haas does go, Painter has to have another big in the pipeline for 2017.

The next few months and the NBA process will define what our needs are next year.

No way Wheeler could log minutes at center. He's thinner than Haarms and 6 inches shorter.

I will 100% guarantee you that Haas and VE will not stay in the draft if they decide to test the waters, so no, it's not because three players might leave early. It's because one player is leaving early.

If he's had the growth spurt the someone on here claimed recently (up to 6'9), it's possible, even with being thin. If a player is athletic enough, they can make up for a size discrepancy (in this case, build and bulk). This is the opposite deficiency in these two examples, but Bonzie Colson plays the 4 and 5 at Notre Dame and he's 6'5. Jae'Sean Tate plays the 4 at Ohio State and he's 6'5. It can be done.

Correct that's what my post says......but also has the addition of possibilities because I unlike you cannot see the future and be 100% correct like you all the time.

Look at every team in the FF. Long athletes at every position with an occasional short guard or back to the basket center. We are moving that way.

I agree overall on moving to longer more athletic guys. Still will need a traditional center type when the matches favor it. I like Haas but he is for a different time/era of the game.

I think regardless of what happens with Vincent and Haas, Painter wants another big man. Especially one that can play with his back to the basket and be a bruiser down low. Haarms isn't going to be that guy.

Hopefully we can nab Ondigo but worst case scenario he doesn't commit and we get Trapp in 2018.

Having seen Wheeler play, I can state with extreme confidence that Vince Edwards is more likely to play the 5 next year than Wheeler. Purdue plays in the Big Ten and a 6'9. 185 pound true freshman has no prayer of playing the five in our league IMO.

Agree. He is a 3 or 4. Run, slash, finish inside, rebound from outside in, hopefully shoot well from outside. Defend 2-4.

I just walked past a large billboard today with Wheeler on it at the Manchester Airport. He didn't look 6'9". Of course, who knows when the picture was taken and who knows what scale it was taken in. So, yeah...

Still pretty cool seeing it.

On a bill board he must have looked more like 14'6".

Purdue doesn't need another tall unathletic 7 footer. Haarms is good because he can shoot, but we need a guy about 6'9-6'11 that is an athletic shot blocker. Somebody with JJs skillset would be ideal. Hopefully between Taylor, Ewing, Wheeler, and Haarms they can fill the void of Biggie. Haas still hasn't quite figured it out yet. He shows flashes, but not enough to trust him for 30+ minutes a game. Going smaller next year may be a good thing. Ondigo is a perfect fit. Raw athletic shot blocker. That is what Purdue needs moving forward. Look what Bell did for Oregon against Kansas.

Whatever happens our rebound will be a big problem after Biggie leaves. But the good thing is that all of the big newcomers are shot blockers, adding Taylor I think our block percentage will raise incredibly next season. Eastern can block sometimes depending on which position he's on.
