Recruiting ... Because it's the end of July and we can ...

I was thinking Cal. Did he actually finish the year at Tenn ?
I might be misunderstanding what you are saying, but Martin was at Tennessee for 3 seasons. Interestingly enough, it was after his best season that they ran him out of town.

I like Cline a whole lot but he is what he is a 3-point shooter I don't classify a three-point shooter a high level 4 star player. And last year in the tournament Cuonzo Martin's best players was freshman Matt painters wasn't. Our best player was a senior their best player was a freshman big difference there

Meaning if we didn't get him stop crying about it and move on it's becoming very common that we miss out on kids here in Indiana if you want to fix the problem my answer is Cuonzo Martin everybody's got their own answer that's mine what is yours
My answer is to find a coach who can bring in quality talent like Vince Edwards, Isaac Haas, Caleb Swanigan, and Carsen Edwards.

If Painter loses his ability to land this level of talent, I may start becoming concerned, but right now I am assuming the the 2017 class will come together in the fall.

Tennessee?

Cline a high end 4*? Huh?

Perhaps under-rated when all is said and done, but yeah, I think Cline was a 3-star from most recruiting sources with the exception being ESPN. Glad Purdue got him, though for sure, and CMP should get some credit for that.

Also if my memory is correct, he had an Avg Tenn team 1 play away from an E8 or F4. I could be wrong tho, only going off my memory.

2014....yeah....down to the wire with Michigan in Indy to advance to the Regional Final.....then Michigan had that barn-burner losing to Kentucky.

You are correct. Painter and his staff will bring in some talent with this class but it is hard to be patient. Fans like myself are curious to see who we land.

You are so naive and shortsighted it's not even funny. You clearly haven't paid attention to anything about Cuonzo/Cal basketball at all. Their best player was Tyrone Wallace. Lead the team in scoring, assists, steals, and averaged .1 rebound less than Jaylen Brown (your assumed best player on Cal). And guess what, Wallace was a Sr., they also had the #23 player in the country (#2 SG) on espn in his recruiting class, Jabari Bird, on the team as a Jr, a very good Jordan Mathews who was a Jr and averaged 13.5/3.4 rebs. Add that along with 2 top 8 players in the country (Brown and Rabb), and Cal should have done way better. They were #14 team preseason, ended up #23. So clearly a let down. Purdue on the other hand, was #23 preseason and ended up #12.

only reason why California was ranked so high going into the season was because of the Freshman they brought in had nothing to do with the pre-existing players if they didn't get those top-notch players they wouldn't even have been ranked at all.

That's fair. I want to know as well, but I don't know the players that Purdue is recruiting well enough to have preferences.

The moral of the story is Cuonzo Martin is a better recruiter then Matt painter coaching abilities they're about the same differences console would be coaching better players. Cuonzo Martin got good players to come to Tennessee and California two programs that haven't been good in a while California hasn't been good since Jason Kidd. I believe with Cuonzo Martin setting on Purdue's bench which is a better school than California and Tennessee both in basketball he definitely would be able to keep the top talent in state. And yes being a black coach does help whether you want to admit it or not it does. Especially one that relates to kids which he does

Painters a class act coach/person and most kids these days look right over that and it's sad. I've never heard a player say negative things about him unless it's aka sauce man Ronnie. I know he could do better at times in recruiting and playing calling but the man can coach and does a better job than most coaches out there. We're not going to find a better coach so let's just drop that idea of switching coaches.

True, most of us don't know anything about these players besides the stars next to their name. I like seeing Purdue get Indiana guys though

I like 'Zo but don't get why he would be more attractive unless you're playing the race card. He hasn't played for Purdue since before the current recruits were even born and doesn't have this glowing resume that screams I'll get you to the NBA and the NCAA FF while you're playing for me. Anybody care to explain why he'd be so much better than MP?

It's not about "I'll get you to the NBA" so much as I can just see why people are fans of Cuonzo. He's been able to recruit well already at Cal and pretty sure he landed a 5 star player at Tennessee too (not positive on that).

I think we've seen what Painter is and isn't, and people feel that Cuonzo would be able to make that push on the recruiting front...after all, wasn't he a big factor in landing the Baby Boilers?

Regarding the race thing, that wasn't what I meant at all, and nobody should be hired or not hired because of his/her race.

With that being said, the race factor is interesting. I have no clue if it would matter to recruits and players at all, if their potential coach is black, but being that the majority of division 1 basketball players in power 5 conferences are black, it wouldn't surprise me if a black coach was viewed as a good thing. I hope nobody takes that the wrong way.

I like Painter, but I just feel like Purdue can achieve more with a different coach and style of play. Maybe this year will be the start of it.

You are out of your mind saying Cuonzo Martin is a Mike Davis. Cuonzo Martin's been coaching what three years at Tennessee going on his second year at California and he's already been to Elite 8 can't say that Matt Painter. Painters been coaching for what 12 years no Elite 8 yet. 4 five star players in five years for Cuonzo Martin 1 five star player for Matt Painter in 12 years of coaching.

I wouldn't mind giving Zo a shot at the HC job at P. Of course, I'm also on record for saying that I want the next coach to be someone with zero Purdue ties.
All that said, my predication is still that Chris Mack is P's next HC.

Landing 5* players and having success is two entirely different things. Cuonzo is Purdue's version of Mike Davis. Great recruiter and an average at best coach.
That seems rather harsh/disingenuous on Martin.
At each of his three stops as head coach, he has consistently improved his team's record year over year (26, 24, 23 win seasons for each) .

I'd still trade it with Purdue's record of final four appearances over the last 35 years.....
Sure but the prerequisite is having a program the caliber of what Knight built from which a coach could take over. The program Painter took over was way way down. The one Davis inherited was strong. Big difference. The point is what happened to both programs over the next few years.
