Purdue WBB vs. Notre Dame THREAD

Jones opened up just awful thinking she was good enough to take on ND 1 on 5, bad shots, bad passes, bad decisions with the ball......

McCarthy has no touches on offense

we are down 11-3 and the game feels more lopsided than that.

Jones inbounds the ball under our basket, runs laterally down the out of bounds and gets the ball passed back to her while she is still out of freaking bounds....... We look like an NAIA team against a top 6 NCAA team.... Collier in the game now..... she has NO BUSINESS in this game.

Why the hell is Jones bringing the ball up on offense? She doesn't look to pass unless she cannot find a terrible shot for herself first.

28-7 at the end of the first quarter. We have no point guard... Amiyah cannot handle the ball under pressure from ND, Jones cannot pass, Lobard is not playing pg, but shooting guard, and not getting the ball passed to her in scoring position, same with Swanson. McCarthy and Puryear have yet to touch the ball on offense. ZERO assists. 8 Turnovers, and outrebounded 16-8. Not sure this team can win 10 games playing like this.

Gearlds has no freaking clue how to coach her own team, Petree and Collier now playing and Petree still hasn't seen a bad shot she doesn't like shooting bad shots.

Collier, Petree, Puryear, Jones, and Smith on the floor together..... not a player that can score against ND in that lineup.

Bass in for Collier, air ball three.

We shouldn’t really be surprised by any of this, should we? What can we expect from a team that gave up 34 in the fourth quarter to PFW and barely pulled out a win? Gearlds shouldn’t be here for very many more seasons, but our AD will prob keep her here like he did Versyp.

My fear is IF Bobinski fires Gearlds, he will make a big offer to White to lure her away from the Fever.

Okay, Collier starting to show something on offense with 5 points, but there is not a player on NDs roster she seems to be able to guard or keep off the offensive glass.

Smith trying to bring the ball up one on one against Hidalgo and doesn't get to the ND 3 pt line in 10 seconds.........

This is really really hard to watch. Didn't expect a win but expected being somewhat competitive. Turnovers and can't make shots. Add to the fact we have no ability to stop them or rebound.

A couple of minutes of competent bball, then back to ineptitude. Team is way overmatched.
ND is faster, more athletic, stronger, smarter, more talented, and hungrier. Did I leave anything out?

BUT…. I do like Swanson’s grit and Lombard seems dialed in, just skinny. Jayla Smith playing better (relatively) but Purdue needs her to have grown and improved more, and way before her Senior year. Gonna be a long game. And season. Sigh…

Purdue has only had 3 players make a basket. Lombard 4-5; Collier 2-4, and Jones 1-7. Jones as the starting point has 7 shots, no assists, 2 steals, a rebound and 2 turnovers.

Outrebounded 33-12 and ND has 13 offensive boards.

As a team 2 assists to 11 turnovers.

Smith was playing back up point. 0-3 shooting, 2 of them terrible shot choices and 0 assists to 2 turnovers. Not sure what you are seeing that says she is playing better.

I said last year that everyone that was looking forward to Terry graduating would only realize how much she gave us once we started playing this season. We are seeing it tonight.

Smith seemed to be playing a bit faster and more aggressively than I remember from last season. That’s where I was coming from. Marginal improvement, not significant. Just looking for positives - but you’re right, not much there I guess

Bad team, going to be a long year…I’ll be honest, I’m not sure Purdue has the Coach needed to turn this around, I’m fine with a year or maybe two more but this is pathetic what has happened to this once proud program.

Nice post feed from Puryear in the high post to McCarthy. Play them both together and let Bass sit on the bench until she figures out how to freaking rebound!!!!!!

102-58 ND wins.

Rebounding 53-28 ND

Amiyah has to start at point and play as much as possible at least until Poole is ready to play, she is the only guard we played that tried running the offense to set up others rather than looking for their own shot. She wasn't great, but she was at least looking like a point guard unlike Smith and Jones.

I would rather start Puryear at PF than Bass. Bass was absolutely crushed by ND's King. 1 rb to 15 10 points on 10 shots and 4 fts vs 18 points on 12 shots.

Collier's boxscore looks better than her play did. She was lost on D often and was constantly out of position. There was only one player ND played she could guard, their former walk on that played the last minute..... and she still scored against us.

This game, South Carolina, USC, UCLA will be non-competes most likely. I didn't mind ND being on the schedule until USC and UCLA joined the conference. Until the program is back to a more competitive level, we shouldn't schedule the Irish.

Destini looked like the only player that belonged on the court with the Irish. Glad she's on this team, nice under the radar pick up from Gearlds.

McCarthy might of been the only other player that seemed to hold her own. It would of been nice to slow it down a little more and post up McCarthy. I can't remember who it was in the first quarter but Lana stonewalled her as the Irish player went into her. She's so tough to move and may make the first team BIG freshman.

Collier showed off some of her shooting. The question for me was always her foot speed and it's evident she'll have some trouble sticking with quicker opponents. I thought she was somewhat composed out there though.. compared to others.

Swanson is just a soph, but she gets sped up too much and creates problems for herself. As the game slows down, we should see less turnovers from her.

I feel for Jones, she's always been a 2 guard but is being thrust into the PG role with Poole out, and Amiyah not ready for heavy minutes. She made some plays getting to the bucket. Jumper wasn't there today, alot of that had to do with confidence. She had an All American guard on her all night, she'll bounce back.

Speaking of Poole, I think she would of helped tonight. Yeah we still lose by 30+ but I think Poole is our best ball handler. She also has the speed to stay with some of those Irish guards. Hopefully she's ready to go in a couple of weeks.

Ironically, this game was probably more of a blowout because ND only had 7 players and we're forced to played their all Americans all game, and they didn't let off the gas until maybe a minute to go.

It's only game 2 and we have alot of pieces gelling, but we need to be better defensively. Having less unforced turnovers will help with that.

Geez, this weekend just keeps getting better.

First football's masterpiece at Ohio State and now this--on our own home floor.

Here's to volleyball showing some pride at Indiana and sweeping Michigan.

But, damn, 2 of Purdue's 3 highest-profile sports are just.... Wow!

We are seeing the results of an administration determined to go the cheap route and not hire proven coaches.

Except they did not go cheap on Gearlds. She is making over 600k a year, middle of the pack or higher for BT coaches salaries. Gearlds makes more than Moren at IU I believe and significantly more than Merchant was getting at MSU of 250k.

It wasn't being cheap, it was not caring about wbball. His first choice was White, who got fired two weeks later in a player revolt and only won less than 1/3 of her conference games at Vandy in 5 years.

Look again, Moren is over $1.2 M and I think Gearlds is about #12 in the Big 10. Plenty of coaches ahead of her whose records don’t blow anyone away.

And if you include the new Big 10 schools, she slides further down the list.

Collier is fine, ideally she’s a 10th/11th player maybe getting 6-8 minutes a night, problem is here she’s getting major minutes, lots of roster flaws. Play Puryear and McCarthy major minutes, go young, these two might become nice players here

ND is insanely talented. Combination of recruiting high school all Americans and then adding really good, experienced veterans from the transfer portal will tend to do that to a team.

Miles and Hildago are probably the best guard rotation in the country. They did this not even being close to full strength as Westbeld, Karlen, Watson and Bransford are all out with injuries. Mercyhurst - whatever school that is - at least managed to get to the 60 pt mark against them and that was played at ND.

This is a harsh reminder that we will struggle mightly against sveral in an absolutely loaded big ten. Besides Northwestern - who is playing terrible, Rutgers and possibly Wisconsin - I don't see many wins.

KG can try to sugar coat this as some type of "learning lesson" for the team - but pretty much the only lesson we learned is that recruiting is not keeping up. Especially portal recruiting. Last summer they just went out and got a bunch of average players because we can't draw any notable ones here. Relying on two freshmen post players to be essentially your entire post game is not a wise thing to do. But hey - at least we have like 10 "wings" who can't score or really do anything productive.

Losing MA to Stanford where she is apparently going to be a 10 mpg backup this year for them really hurts. She could've had as many minutes as she wanted for us. But she wants to win and not live in Indiana - and I don't blame her.
