Purdue vs. Wisconsin: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

The Badger 🦡 fans are tied (IU) for the worst in the Bigten. They blame all their losses on the Refs; social media is a blaze with negativity to Edey and the rest of the team. They don’t get Edey doesn’t play aggressively on defense; just being present in the paint he’s a shot blocker. They think he should have 5 fouls cause he’s big. He shouldn’t get his shooting fouls even when teams play aggressive hack-a-Shaq methods. GIVE’EM HELL BOYS, 40 minutes of chaos, pedal to the floor. Show them a fully loaded frieght train is coming to get’em. Win by 20 and set their rodent living fan base back to drown in their own tears. BOILER UP

PREDICTION Purdue 88, Wisconsin 63

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, it's the Wisconsin Badgers (21-12; 2-0) and the #3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (29-3; 1-0) in the first semi-final match-up of the 2024 Big Ten Tournament from the Target Center in Minneapolis. Tip is scheduled for approximately 1:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on CBS. The winner advances to the championship game to take on the winner of Nebraska (#3)/Illinois (#2) game, which follows this one.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Wisconsin - Steven Crowl, Tyler Wahl, AJ Storr, Max Klesmit, and Chucky Hepburn (did not play yesterday but expected to play today)

Purdue - Zach Edey, Trey Kaufman-Renn, Lance Jones, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith (questionable - due to calf injury)

These two teams just met last Sunday at Purdue with the Boilers winning 78-70 in a competitive, physical contest. That's usually been the case when these two teams meet, and I would expect that to be the case again today.

Wisconsin had a strong start to the season and then fell off for a while. The Badgers seem to have found some footing in the post-season as they've been solid and looked good in defeating Maryland and the 4-seed, Northwestern. They have been particularly potent from long-range, shooting 16/25 against Maryland from long-range and following that up with a 10/22 performance against Northwestern. If that continues today, they will be a really tough out for Purdue. AJ Storr led Wisconsin with a career-high 30 and Steven Crowl had one of his better games with 19, including 3/5 from 3-pt range.

Purdue's fortunes in this game are a little up in the air depending upon the status of Braden Smith, who is listed a questionable for his status today. Smith partially hyperextended his knee, straining his calf, in the second half of yesterday's game against Michigan State. If Smith can't go or is limited, that puts a lot more pressure on the rest of the Boilers offensively. In some ways, it's a bigger loss in the line-up than if Zach Edey were out. Plus, it will embolden Wisconsin with more options to defend Edey without having to divert as much attention to Smith. He's also the key piece in finding shooters and has been disruptive on defense, especially lately.

Wisconsin is led by AJ Storr, who averages 16.2 points and 3.7 rebounds, while shooting 43.5% from the field (31.4% 3pt). Forward Tyler Wahl adds 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds, though he's been very quiet in the two tournament games, averaging just 4.0 points and no rebounds. One player who is coming on is 6-4 guard John Blackwell, who averages 8.5 points and shoots 48.1% from the 3-point line and is averaging 14 points over his last four games. He also gave Purdue some issues in the last game - chipping in 18 off the bench. Purdue will really need to keep attention focused when he is on the floor. And, even though Wahl has been relatively quiet - he was very good against the Boilers last time out - with a 17/10/5 performance

Wisconsin has also played Zach Edey fairly well for the most part - holding him to 18 points on 7/13 shooting in the first game and 25 points on 7/14 shooting. Also look for Storr to have a good game today - he has the physical style and shot-making capability to hurt the Purdue defense and lead Wisconsin with good decisions. With Storr, Wahl, Blackwell, and Crowl - Wisconsin has the ability to score and really put pressure on Purdue today. The Boilers will need a much better effort and performance than yesterday to prevail today.

Can the Boilers step up to the task and get a step closer to the tournament championship?

We shall see, starting in a little over an hour.

Boiler Up, my friends...

Braden will play unfortunately. Hopefully with at least lesser minutes. Especially if any combination of those three is out. Wahl and Blackwell have performed the best against us, and without Hepburn they are weak at PG. hopefully we don’t need much from starters and our key bench pieces can get some minutes

will be interesting to see if Crowl keeps shooting 3 's to draw Zack away but hope TKR comes to play and rebound instead of that no show yesterday

I just want us to play well. Not concerned with getting a win. I'm just going to relax and enjoy the game.

game is just silly so far. Edey with a foul and T. Wahl with 2. Crowl feasting with no Edey. Things chippy so far in a game where you just don’t an injury. Jones is on fire.
