Purdue v. Michigan State Game Thread

Stuck in traffic but finally arrived.....

Yep. Even Larry Scrotum wasn't terrible today.
I try to call it like I see it with the refs, I get it, every teams fans complain, I guarentee on MSU’s board there’s complaining about Purdue’s 16-18 Free Throws. Sure, there were a few missed both ways but for the most part this and the Penn State game were reffed fairly, teams were allowed to play for the most part.

I can get emotional at times during game threads.....who would have thought from the dinosaur, but for a conference road game - it wasn't bad between the teams getting breaks or bad calls.

Trying to calm down from the drama of the game, I think if there's any beef it's that they let a LOT go for both teams in the first half, then called it tighter in the second half. That was a subtle point Shrewsberry talked about. Braden Smith didn't adjust as well as Fletcher Loyer. Zach Edey did a great job of staying out of foul trouble - that would have doomed the Boilers.

I would hasten to wager Matt Painter points out Purdue was more aggressive with the drive in the later stages and started getting the same calls.

16-18 from the line for Purdue, today......HUGE!
That was teh game...and Loyer and Zach had it going. MSU outscored Purdue from the 2 and the 3 and out rebounded Purdue as well by one. Purdue had 3 less fouls than MSU that maybe should have had a few more! Those FTs that were huge were the result of getting fouled going for 2.

No offense to those who posted, but I truly cannot understand the comments of a well-refereed game!!! Nothing summarized this game better than the Hoggard phantom foul called on Morton juxtaposed with ZE getting mugged on every offensive possession. His last basket surely should have been called an and 1! Probably asking way too much, but I long for the day when height is regarded as an equal skill set as quickness.

Purdue also 4-10 from beyond the arc. Michigan State decided to put it on Zach Edey and just push him out a little. It worked somewhat but eventually fell through. Boilers with nine turnovers - did ok there as a few of those were offensive fouls.....not too many transition run-outs I can recall.

Malik Hall out did help Purdue.

Maybe I should have stated......"in the context of every other conference game.....this game" :)

It is becoming way too much of a variable, and I think just about every team (and fans) in the conference have a beef. I don't know what they're going to do.....it's maddening.....and I freely admit there are games that Purdue gets their share and then some of breaks.

Today, it was mainly Lamar Simpson underneath calling most of it.

i have to agree. edey gets fouled on almost every offensive possession. i watch edey at the home games and the opposing center is always holding or hacking. the refs just decide it is ok because edey is so tall i guess.

I think good D is physical by nature and that can hurt a finesse team. I think Braden struggled with the fouls called on him that in my opinion were pretty bad. Your back turned trying to get out of the way, and a few on D and one on dribbliing and pushing the body off you...rather than reaching to body to keep him from defending you. The games at MSU are usually physical with mauling the inside players and why they are trypically able to play straight up...but Zach is a different animal although I think their fouling affected a few shots. This was an ugly game where Walker was on fire and Purdue was very fortunate to win. Thank God for the FT shooting!!!!

yah, I was saying it was about time that he finally missed one after all the insane makes (he couldn't miss until the end- it finally happened)
The D on his last make was pretty much a desperate shot that still went in.

It looked like Zach gathered himself well and really went strong and was inches away from stuffing it. Normally, when he starts out too far from the blocks his shot is 5 to 6 feet away it seems.

I agree overall. It sure did seem their guards pushed-off a lot with out calls, but that's how the game was called, even if they were fouls. On the other hand, Morton didn't touch Walker and Edey arm wrestled their big guy - even-up on those two

I don't think in that venue and at that time Purdue was ever getting an and one.

Yeah 2nd half definitely reminded me of a game in ass hall. Muggings at one end and touch fouls at best on the other.

Yes, if I recall MSU hit 2 more from 3, but shot a lot more (9?)...which is understandable. Hall out would have changed things as far as Walker having the number of attempts. I was glad to see caleb miss the screen that was designed ot give the triggerman a more open looks or the Purdue defender getting a foul. Purdue...Loyer and Zach played with a lot of poise on O towards the end. Boy is Trey REALLY struggling right now. Purdue needs him to find his groove.

Purdue has to have another counter to those VERY HARD hedges on the ball where Zach is flanked by both sides and both "ABOVE" him with nobody between him and the basket...just space. junior high kids and up should be able to cover 15 ' with one dribble...I have no idea what Zach can do, but Purdue needs something other than slips IMO since teams are hedging harder the last 2 or 3 games. Not Matt's style, but would like a clear out for a ball handler sometime AND some way of getting Ethan to the rim since teams do not defend him behind the arc...

Zach should have got an extra point on the take down! ;)

Games like this are why I really don't care about a BigTen title anymore. Great if Purdue wins it but the reffing is just HORRIFIC. Edey was fouled on so many post moves and shots I lost count. Great gutty win but man. Call a foul a freaking FOUL!!!!

Also Fletcher Loyer you are one ice cold d!ck killer my man. Most clutch Purdue player I have seen since I started watching Purdue basketball in 2003. Would be 3-4 in conference this year without you.

When they went to the camera and flipped through to the only really good view you could see the ball spin and directions of the two different arms that could have touched it. I thought it was a no brainer and the delayed timing was just trying to pretend it was really hard to tell so that the crowd would calm down and not prevent them from running off the court...or maybe that was the delay...Okay, guys when it gets down to the last possession we actually start our rotation a minute earlier to get the fastest guy under the basket farthest from our exit...2nd fastest and the least out of shape on top.

At any second I thought they would take the headphones off and do a curly shuffle

Morton left Walker open and he air balls ....made that shot all day.
I know that Morton had a rough day offensively and took a lot of crap on this board, but his defense on the last play was outstanding. He fought thru a Hauser veteran( moving, illegal?) pick to alter Walker's shot. Some post game comments suggested that he got a piece of the ball.

That was a crafty move from Hauser - similar to a pick play in football.....they'll never call that and it got Walker some space.

I don't know if I will survive this season though. Purdue's first seven conference games? Four down to the wire, one OT....Boilers have taken three of four.....which is great but had to score in two of them in the last 10 seconds AND get stops.

poise under pressure..."A" difference from last year to this...

I was wondering what the rule is pertaining to the play that Smith turned his back. It looked like the MSU player intentionally jumped into his back. Isn’t Smith entitled to his space?

I had no problem w/ the osu game neither, not many calls and a quick free flowing game.

Good post, Purdue especially Smith needs to watch with the cheap reach ins, Painter sort of let Him have it on the bench. Such a good win, as bad as that game was in the first half, the second half was fantastic, both teams hit huge shots.
