We spent a lot of times on these in-state recruits and was hoping we capitalize on our national runner up season last year and land one of these guys. Sisley was the most likely but the "my dream loosier school" was just too strong.

The one and done, 5 stars like Haralson and Mullins most likely are getting too much NIL to come and play for Purdue.

Sounds like we are getting West and may have a good chance with Singleton. Williams-Adams probably won't happen. We need to get Singleton then we should be alright with the portal nowadays. CMP shuld change his pitch a bit so some of these elite kids would come.
Be honest but also creative.

How did you see Haralson and Mullins playing next year? From what player would they take minutes away from? We are very experienced this year and even more so next year.

It sucks. But It’s not that big of a miss as it has been in the last due to the portal being there.

Brian said we hadn’t recruited JH for some time and I’d take Colvin, Heide and Loyer over Mullins NEXT year. After that, he may be better. But we have seen Frosh take time to pickup schemes and we are crowded at his position. I’m not sure he is a one and done unless Hurley can get that out of him.

I think JH could have helped us the most out of the class of 2025 recruits. But good luck to him and Mullins.

Sisley would be a good foundational piece and would have been a good boiler, however, portal will always be there for him 😏. But hope it pans out for him too.

I read some postmortem stuff on Sisley and he was attending a lot of IU games and comes from an IU house. The fact we were close says a lot about Painter and our staff.

The other piece was about our roster next year. Minutes would be hard fought for any of them unless Painter would promise playing time and cut a returners time.

I think Mullins ends up at IU and Haralson ends up at ND.

It is hard to reconcile NIL and the portal with the model of using experienced players to get you to a FF. Since NIL and the portal are new, we will have to see how things evolve. Playing together for a few years is a definite advantage as I feel our friends to the south will find out soon. The portal and NIL could make keeping a team together for a few seasons difficult. Time will tell. Of Haralson, Mullins and Sisley, Mullins is the one I hate to see get away. Sisley is a solid foundation player but not a difference maker. I just never had a good feeling about Harlason as a Purdue fit. Mullins is the guy I wanted.

Mullins just doesn’t fit next year with Fletch and Myles being more experienced.

Given the wacky nature of things nowadays with portal transfers, NIL, etc. — who’s to say we couldn’t pull any of these kids to Purdue in a year or two to fulfill a specific need if necessary ( assuming they aren’t headed directly to the NBA)??

The “Mason Gillis Scenario” cuts both ways, no?

Very true. After next year I’d expect to see Paint play the portal a lot more.

I wouldn’t be shocked at all to hear of serious buyers’ remorse down the road from those kids and parents who passed on CMP’s honesty…

To borrow a line from incomparable Indiana legend, John Hiatt: “The hardcore language of the truth”

Sure, it stinks that we are not getting these players, but some of these players would not work well in Painter's system for team chemistry, if they want to be the #1 option immediately. Painter does not guarantee minutes, which is why we lost Catchings. We are losing out on others, because Purdue is not going to get in a bidding war for the top recruits. Painter always seems to find a great bunch of kids that learn and respect the system. Everyone plays to their roles.

Again, I am not concerned with our basketball program. We will be just fine. The football program is a different story. We are in a bad situation when our neighbors to the south look head and shoulders better than we do in football.

Agree. Now that it seems UConn is very high on Adams. I think Mullins doesn't have the leverage once he commits to UConn.

Painter has done really well with recruiting classes with far less talent than West, Singleton, and SWA.

We also are not winning the recruiting battles with top kids right now because of the talent we already have and how we retain that talent each year….also the 5 freshman class this year didn’t “help” for next year in recruiting 😂

UConn didn’t make Adams “top 8” list tho.

What do you mean by leverage once he commits?
Darius?

If NIL is a part of his commitment and I'm assuming it will since he's a top 25 kid. He won't have that leverage for more NIL money from another program.

Why?

Players determine who plays but it’s hard to sell playing time when your roster has 1 senior, 5 incoming freshman and at least 3-4 underclass starters on it. If Purdue had openings in the lineup I would bet money on one of these kids picking Painter and Purdue. I know it sucks seeing all these Indiana guys pick different schools though! The 2026 class will be the money maker!

Agree, but it also is way too early to draw many conclusions about the 2025 class. I think back to the 2016 class when, iirc, Purdue only signed one recruit, a relatively unheralded guard named Carsen Edwards, who just happened to be the perfect recruit at the perfect time.

This article is for you….

A favorite quote from it —-
"They're coming to Purdue to win. If you're just going to school for an opportunity just to play — it's not recess," he sad. "If you're like, 'Hey, I don't know if I'm going to play there right away,' or 'It's going to be tougher to play there right away,' yeah, well, no shit.

"We're successful. We've won games. People we've signed weren't scared of that."

CMP is the best. I could listen to him all day. Really down to earth and seemingly honest. I for one have no problem with his recruiting approach. I really enjoyed the Q & A at this summer’s camp with my SiL and Grandson. I asked him what the best road win of the season was, and he quickly mentioned winning in Champaign. It certainly was mine as well.

Barring any transfers or leave early for pros, there will not be “at least 3-4 underclass starters” on the 2025-26 team. Smith, Loyer and K-Renn are pretty much guaranteed starters. All seniors. Then add in Colvin or Heide as possible or probable Jr. starter, leaves one open.

This is fantastic. This should literally shut everyone up about stars and recruiting “misses”.

I can't see Painter playing the portal much at all. His current system works great the way it is. Now if another Lance Jones came along....
Portal will always be a last resort type scenario for us, IMO. We are doing a great job filling and balancing the roster across classes and positions. There are unforeseen challenges like NBA, injury and transfers that might make us grab someone to fill a hole.

End of the day, Painter even said it, outside of the top 20 kids, everyone up to 150 is a crap shot. Some will turn into a Jaden Ivey and others will be just ho hum. Goal is to develop them and have them buy into the system

Smith, Loyer, Waddell and TKR gone after next year. What if Heide and/or colvin leave too? That’s 4-6 spots you’re filling and you’re not signing 4-6 Frosh every year. That’s where the portal comes into play.

I don't see either of those two leaving for greener pastures, but you never know. I hope both get playing time this year.

It’s irrelevant they are changing the roster sizes. I don’t think it will be the firm 13 player scholarship limit. This will result in more traditional scholarship players coming out for Purdue, less walk-on opportunities, and transfers will be marginal as we will have such a deep bench unless we have a major unolanned exodus. I do think we have a 3 player class in 2025 which gets us to the 15 player roster limit, anyone leaving early will be replaced by walk-ons or marginal transfers. 2026 then will have 4 person class and so on.
