In her post game press conference after IU Gearlds stated the way to get better was to get busy in the portal and try to emulate the Missouri and Michigan men who turned over their full rosters with portal players. She also stated she PROMISED Jones to go get a point guard in the portal so Rashunda can move to the off guard spot. Pretty clear that she doesn't see Poole or Amiyah as viable players at least next year........

I expect at least 3 transfers out and 5 portal players in after listening to that.

Gearlds also stated she has been assured she will be back next year and that helps her feel very secure in her future here.

When asked about Poole and Amiyah getting a full offseason, CKG said "gotta get healthy, gotta get stronger, gotta stay committed to it, that's pretty much on them".

I may be reading too much into that, but her tone made it seem like she wasn't hopeful either of them could make the jump needed to really help the team next season.

This along with her saying she's going to get a PG for Jones next season.

With CKG's job possibly on the line next season, she needs a proven ball handler, and I don't think she wants to risk depending on those two.

Purdue/Gearlds doesn't have the drawing power of the Michigan men's program/Dusty May. I mean, Purdue was in a better position last year, and Gearlds couldn't attract any game changers.

Gearlds needs a more realistic plan--one centered around player development and reestablishing a winning mentality in all phases of the program.

I'm not an insider. It's entirely possible that some of the high school recruits aren't working out and will have to go. Not saying Gearlds is right or wrong, but she can't develop players who aren't committed to getting better.

But treating the portal as a quick fix seems unrealistic to me.

I like that you mentioned players who are committed to being better.

Yes, part of the equation is Gearlds developing these girls in practice/games, but it's also on the players to get up extra work. Now you could say Gearlds needs to be able to identify players who are willing to be gym rats, that's fair.

I can't speak for everyone because I'm looking at the program from the outside, but Jones, Puryear, and McCarthy strike me as players that really want to put in the work to be better.

To me this was a cop out on the coaches part. Certainly they are not so horrible at talent evaluation that they have recruited a dozen lazy players without realizing it? If it was the minority of players not improving, I might buy it, but its damn near all of them. Jones has shown some year over year improvement, but she still doesn't have a reliable 3 point shot, and now we are promising her to be in the shooting guard slot next season? SMDH

She needs to work on her 3 point shot. Hopefully this offseason she develops into the women’s version of Cuonzo Martin, 0 for 7 from distance his first two years, 45.9% his last two years. And Jones is already ahead of Martin, not being 0 for her first two years. Ah! We have 8 months of dreaming to look forward to, and dreaming is still free ...

But didn't Zoe have to sit out a year with a knee injury and that is when he developed his three point shot because he no longer could get to the rim as easily? He was remarkable, but his story is so memorable because it is such a complete rarity for someone to change their game that much after they are in college. But as you say dreaming is free.

You are right he had to change his game or give it up.

Let’s be honest, Poole and Reynolds showed nothing, I don’t blame the Coach a bit in saying they need a PG, they do. Hopefully, those two get angry about it and want to prove her wrong, if not they can leave, not sure who would want them. If we’re not counting Harper because son have no clue what happened to her my guess would be 1-2 players leave and 3-4 are brought in, it’s on Coach to bring in good portal players, if she can’t the team will be lousy again next year.
