In her post game press conference after IU Gearlds stated the way to get better was to get busy in the portal and try to emulate the Missouri and Michigan men who turned over their full rosters with portal players. She also stated she PROMISED Jones to go get a point guard in the portal so Rashunda can move to the off guard spot. Pretty clear that she doesn't see Poole or Amiyah as viable players at least next year........

I expect at least 3 transfers out and 5 portal players in after listening to that.

Gearlds also stated she has been assured she will be back next year and that helps her feel very secure in her future here.

When asked about Poole and Amiyah getting a full offseason, CKG said "gotta get healthy, gotta get stronger, gotta stay committed to it, that's pretty much on them".

I may be reading too much into that, but her tone made it seem like she wasn't hopeful either of them could make the jump needed to really help the team next season.

This along with her saying she's going to get a PG for Jones next season.

With CKG's job possibly on the line next season, she needs a proven ball handler, and I don't think she wants to risk depending on those two.

Purdue/Gearlds doesn't have the drawing power of the Michigan men's program/Dusty May. I mean, Purdue was in a better position last year, and Gearlds couldn't attract any game changers.

Gearlds needs a more realistic plan--one centered around player development and reestablishing a winning mentality in all phases of the program.

I'm not an insider. It's entirely possible that some of the high school recruits aren't working out and will have to go. Not saying Gearlds is right or wrong, but she can't develop players who aren't committed to getting better.

But treating the portal as a quick fix seems unrealistic to me.

I like that you mentioned players who are committed to being better.

Yes, part of the equation is Gearlds developing these girls in practice/games, but it's also on the players to get up extra work. Now you could say Gearlds needs to be able to identify players who are willing to be gym rats, that's fair.

I can't speak for everyone because I'm looking at the program from the outside, but Jones, Puryear, and McCarthy strike me as players that really want to put in the work to be better.
