Simple question, but lots of answers.

I personally see Keyante Green, or maybe Markell Jones with DJ Knox being the dark horse

I think it will be basically be a committee but I would put Green as the favorite to get a majority of the carries. He didn't appear to have very good hands, I seem to remember him with a few drops (but that may just be selective memory on my part) so that could hurt him some in the coaches eyes. I could see something like:
Green: 50% of the carries
Jones:25-30%
Knox:25-30%
Spring practice will be a big opportunity for every back on the roster with no true incumbent.

This is what popped into my head before I read what you said.

No thoughts of Richard Worship this year? He looks like quite a load

If he didn't have a redshirt I think he would see some carries but why burn it for 10-15 carries all season. I know Jones is the same situation but I think he probably gets significantly more than that so it isn't as much of a waste.

I really think 3 running backs are all you can give significant (60+) carries to over an entire season. Injuries can always happen and that would change things but lets say you run the ball on average 25 times a game (last year Purdue had 294 carries by it's running backs so that's just under 25 a game, that doesn't include WR carries or QB runs) with your running backs. Depending on effectiveness:

Green gets 125-175
Jones gets 75-100
Knox gets 75-100

and then there's a handful of carries left for others that you wouldn't burn a redshirt year with. Give those to Byars (sp?) or Yancey. I'm speculating but I think there's only one running back rotation spot (60+ carries) open for a true freshmen. Out of Jones, Fuller and Worship I would put Jones as the front runner but you never know. The other 2 redshirt.

I like Green, but he looks more like a change of pace guy. A hard runner. I think Jones - or maybe one of the other guys? - will get a chance as the staff likes "playmakers" that can go to the house.

I love Jones, but he's really not a "take it to the house" kind of guy. But he'll be perfect for Shoops "between the guards" running attack.

I feel like Green could have an all conference season. All the top RBs in the Big Ten will be gone so it is possible.

Maybe Worship blows it up in Spring and Fall and maybe he is the best or second best,,,don't know yet

I think Worship has a lot of potential to do big things, but I'd really like to see him shirt, a guy that size at an athletic position like that can usually get away with it in high school, but in college the conditioning generally ends up showing toward the end of the year and I'd really like him to have a year of strength and conditioning to put it all together and come back to have 4 productive years for us. I think the same could be said for Jones, but I think he has enough talent right now to be played out of necessity. And there is enough talent behind them to equal what we would get out of playing Worship early, meaning I think Yancy, Knox, ect can handle whatever carries worship would get.

Yancey tore MCL last yr. Redshirted his freshman yr. Im pretty sure is back practicing with the team. I think the competition is between the guys that are there in the Spring. Yancey, Green, Knox, Byars and Jones have a shot. With as complex as Whoops offense is, can't see a Fr coming in the summer and breaking the line up. Personally, I think we will see a combo of Green, Yancey, and Knox, with Byars as the dark horse.

Re: I am still waiting to hear from sources on the potential transfer...

A couple of things, first Duh on Worship not being on campus yet. Number 2, Who is this mystery transfer we have heard about before?

Also, It does seem as if after the spring workouts, they will narrow to 3 backs and platoon them as I have read here recently.
I keep reading that the backs are going to be slow. Maybe they are just not as ridiculously quick and fast as Hunt. But some of these backs are very quick, some cut well in the hole, and some are pounders too. Overall we may be better served at RB this season.

I'm assuming this would be a 5th year senior who doesn't have to sit out a year.

I'm betting Worship finds his way to TE/FB/Catching a lot of balls here before he is done.

If he has an impact as a FR, I don't know if it will be carrying the ball.

It has been awhile since we've had a legit blocking FB though that was a threat to make a play in the pass or run games.

Was Jon Goldberry the last one? Three time winner of the Joe Odom look alike contest winner.

Re: I am still waiting to hear from sources on the potential transfer...

You are correct. This player would be eligible to play if they:
1. Choose to leave their current school after obtaining their degree
2. Choose to come to Purdue

At this point, I will admit, it is a bunch of hear-say. However, if it does turn out and my sources are correct, this would be an immediate impact to the offense.

Was he really a threat in the pass/run game?

Jared Crank, when healthy, was good at both.

I recall him having some nice moments, but remember that for Crank too.

Then again, we are talking about Purdue, not a lot of great history at fullback.

I know they had some playbook plays for Brandon Jones as a FB type guy that would let him leak out of the backfield to catch, but they never used them much.

Brandon Jones made some big plays running the wheel route out of the backfield.

My recollection is that those were out of 1 back sets. I think BW was talking about Jones stacked in an I formation with Void.

After the season, Shoop said about the running back position: "That's the type of position young guys can play. You have to learn protections and some of those things, but instincts trump everything. Run to daylight is an instinct you can have at age 18. You don't necessarily have to wait until they're 20."

I don't have anything more to add, but just wanted to say I can't stop laughing at how appropriate the above bolded is in what I can only assume is an autocorrect?

Why though? He's never had much success at tailback and seemed to find a role playing WR in the ND offense.

Right now, id rather be a WR at ND than a running back at Purdue!

Green will get majority of carries with Jones as backup. DJ knox will be used on jet sweeps, screens, and 3rd down like a Sproles type player.

No, they like the RB dive too much for that. They ran it ad nauseam with 180lbs rbs.

I thought those were options that the quarterback didn't pull and run. Didn't realize they were just called dives

A lot of zone reads to the left or right. A lot of the option was window dressing IMO.

Jojo Kemp? That kid is special. I think he's only slated to be a Jr. tho. Don't know how he'd be granted immediate eligibility either...

Worship is already built like Cottom no need for strength might need some work on explosivenes think he will shirt. On the other hand I think Fuller might have the body and speed to see the field next season.
